Noise. In addition to going all psycho on them and lashing out like a fiend, make as much noise as you can to attract attention. Even if it’s just someone bothering you or a stranger getting way too close in a bar or movie theatre or walking down the street, any place where there are other people. If there aren’t any people where you are, change your route to head to the nearest crowd, or police station, or store. But yell and scream your head off, and say what’s happening (“I don’t know you, why are you following me?” “Get your hands off me!”—-Things like that).They’re banking on you being too embarrassed or scared to speak up, or you just wanting to get home, so yell your head off and fight like hell! Also, the thing about crashing the car if someone is making you drive to their preferred place—-crash it into the most public place you can. The middle of traffic, a store, a crowded street. Just be sure and try not to hurt anyone else—-or yourself—-when you do it. I mean, if you’re going to try to run a red light and have another car run into you, make sure they’re going to T-bone your car on the side where the kidnapper is sitting so they take the brunt of the collision and get pinned in or too hurt to move (or most preferably, BOTH), but you can get out of the car on your side. I like the idea of trying to get some of their DNA under your fingernails. In any scenario, if you can get a good deep scratch that puts blood and/or skin under your nails, it’s really definitive evidence who it was who attacked and/or tried to kidnap you. It’s likely these days that, if they’ve attempted this crime (or worse, succeeded) in the past twenty years or so, they and their DNA are in the database—-and they will be caught.

Scream bloody murder, fight/bite/kick, do not worry about causing a scene, but TRAIN. That way your shock wont' freeze you up. Please. Train. Run the drill by yourself if you hvae to, but please, do. It's like fire drills. Be insaner than you think you could ever be. Just In Case. Good self-defence instructors will run you through real-life scenario drills as "graduation". Parking garage, dark street, crowds, whole nine yards.

I was told that if someone is trying something, you should swear at the top of your lungs, people are more likely to look your way at swearing than screaming "help"

I once had to fight off a big guy who was pulling me into a corner of a club (foam party, so obscured from view). I have never hit someone in the face harder in my life. The next morning, my knuckels were bruised. I fought for my life, because that is exactly what was at stake. I kicked and stomped and scratched and went almost feral. I am 5"4, he was at least 6"1. Needless to say he left me alone, we called the police and he got arrested.

This is such victim-blaming rubbish. Many, many women, when assaulted, instinctively avoid "fight" or "flight" but instead choose "freeze" or "appease". Freeze means your body goes still and you sometimes feel very far away, as if it's happening to someone else. Appease means you comply to avoid confrontation and injury. Afterwards, a parade of people will tell you that you should have fought, and it makes you feel like you failed, even if your strategy worked and you survived.

Consider the sounds that you make. My kid was taught at school not to scream but instead to make a really loud moaning sound. It freaks people out because it's unnatural, and so they will get curious. The more eyes and ears involved, the less likely you'll get hurt.

There was a beautiful young woman who was walking across Clapham Common (London) during the lockdown. It is very dark at night. She was talking on her phone and may not have noticed she was being followed by a car. An off duty Policeman (who was licensed to carry a gun) stopped her, they were seen on CCTV and then vanished. He drove her to a distant location, raped and strangled her then burnt her body. He was found very quickly which is good. This was absolutely horrendous and put everyone here in shock. I often think about it, he is still in prison awaiting trial. He will not say why he did it, he was married with two children. Any advice which could avoid this situation is welcomed.

The "asking a woman for help" part really resonated with me. Pretty sure the neighbor lady (I lived in Seattle) was an almost victim of Ted Bundy back in the 70's. Some guy with a cast on his arm (a well known Bundy ploy) asked her for help getting something (groceries, I think?) into the back seat of his car, which was parked at the end of the lot where lighting was really dim. She thought something was off, but as we're taught from kindergarten, women don't want to seem "rude". So she just said she had shoulder problems, but would be happy to ask her husband to come help. (She wasn't married). Miraculously, he managed to get whatever it was into the backseat by himself and drove off. She fit his preferred target to a T - 20's, long hair parted in the middle, athletic build, etc. She ended up in therapy after he was caught.

This seems like questionable advice. Yes, this would work in many cases. But if the kidnapper was taking you for ransom and would rather kill you than be caught, then you resisting would actually make it more likely that you'd be killed than if you'd gone with him.

I agree to noise. Doesn't work in the middle of night and nowhere, but everywhere else. But ... I do ask random people, some happen to be women, for help, like directions or so ... just so happens that I don't know every place work sends me to. Aiming for the eyes is also useful, as it not only may compromise their vision, but hurts truly bad. Ever compared the force you need to apply on your own eyeball until it starts hurting with the force your hands can apply? Tells you how it's gonna work. And DO NOT STOP until the opponent is, by whatever means, physically unable to follow and/or hurt you! If this includes breaking bones, it does. Not your decision to get into a fight with you, so you should get to decide the fight's outcome...

See? I told you I read this before. There's another post here somewhere about psychological tricks and how getting people to follow you when you talk to them and I commented 'you should never let them take you to a second location!'

If you are in dire straits and just have to get help - do not just stand by the road and wait for someone to stop. Instead run out (carefully) and make a car stop and help you. The chances of you picking a bad dude is far less than a bad dude picking you. And yes, scream "FIRE" loudly and repeatedly - it definitely works.

Instead of yelling help start screaming as loud as you can your name, what's happening, and what this person looks like if there's nobody around - don't be afraid to run like hell & if you can - keep yelling.

Make sure to act like a psyco. Kick, scream, go for the eyes, heck, the throat even, attack attack attack.

Also, if you have a weapon like a knife, stab upwards (you'll find less resistance from bones than if you stab downwards).

I keep a pair of pointy tweezers in my pocket ready to defend myself I used to carry a pen or sharpened pencil behind my ear in high school in case anyone tried to hurt me I could use it to stab them

Carry a small weapon on you when you go out alone, when you are going home or to your car have your keys ready and keep something sharp on your keychain to stab them with
