Guy Gets Same Tattoo As His Rescue Dog, People Explain That It’s How Neutered Dogs Are Marked
Most of us would do anything for our dogs, going to great lengths to show love to our 4-legged friends. But some are willing to do more than others, and Texas resident Chris Mendiola is here to show us how it’s done.
The 26-year-old decided to show his love and solidarity by getting the same tattoo design as his dog, Bear. When Chris adopted Bear back in 2010, he noticed a small tattoo on his underbelly which sickened the man, knowing that Bear had bounced from home to home and someone had done this to him.
So last year, he decided to get a matching tattoo and shared the post on Facebook, where everyone quickly pointed out something that Chris appeared to have missed. The symbol on Bear’s stomach was an indicator that he was a neutered dog and not a sign of animal abuse, as Chris had first thought. According to the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, it’s a standard procedure to mark neutered pets in animal shelters, so that no one unnecessarily operates on the dogs again.
As the online ridicule ensued, Chris was quick to explain himself. “We talked to our vet about the dog tattoo. I knew what it meant, I knew what I was getting myself into,” he told Buzzfeed. Apparently, Chris knew about the meaning of the symbol all along, except the internet wasn’t too hot on believing his tattoo idea story. Scroll down to read the story for yourself below, and make your own judgment on Chris’s response.
Meet 26-year-old Texas resident Chris Mendiola, who decided to prove his love to his dog, Bear
Mendiola got Bear back in 2010, after the pooch was passed from one household to another
After adoption, Chris soon noticed that the dog had a tattoo on his underbelly and was sickened by it
“It sickens me to know that people actually tattoo their pets”
So last September he decided to get a matching tattoo, as an expression of solidarity
What he seemed not to know is that the tattoo was an indicator that he was neutered and not a sign of animal abuse
As the internet ridicule ensued, Mendiola was quick to defend himself
He said that he knew what the tattoo meant
“We talked to our vet about the tattoo. I knew what it meant” Chris commented
“They can believe and say what they want, but the tattoo is not for them, it’s for me” he added
The internet, however, wasn’t buying it and were quick to point out some inconsistencies in his story

Share on FacebookAm I the only one wondering why a male dog that has been desexed, has to have a tattoo to stop vets giving it another go???? I would think the lack of big hairy testicles would be suffice. I have an 'entire' black lab.....trust me....you aren't wondering whether he's fixed or not.....them things be right out there...
I tend to agree with you, but a family member of mine recently took a male stray cat to the vet thinking it was female and asking it be spayed. The vet didn't realize he was male until he opened him up. I kept asking if the vet even did a cursory exam to start with. How does that even happen? Even if the balls haven't dropped, it's not difficult to tell the difference between males and females if you have even a basic understanding of what you're looking for. Cats can be a little more complicated than dogs to tell, but still not so different that you can't tell upon examination!
Load More Replies...Why troll him? Because he rescued a dog, because he didn't agree to him being abused by previous owners when he though he was abuse? Because he wanted to show solidarity in his own way, not only by saving, feeding and loving the dog but also having the same mark as him? Ok, he didn't know but I don't think that everyone knows about this. It's the first time I find out about this too and I really don't understand the people who laughed at him. How many people would rescue a dog of that kind? Most of them would go to a breeder and buy it. BP should take down this article, there is nothing hilarious or promotable in it, we;re making fun of a person with good intentions.
I totally agree with you. There are plenty of other sites if you want to look at people getting made fun of, I come on here to get away from it.
Load More Replies...Sh*t happens don't worry bro. Besides not everybody knows what the tattoo means. Just tell your friends its a hamburger with an arrow on top.
the people who jumped down this kind man's throat about the tattoo and were like " actually you didn't know what it was and thought it was from a previous owner so hahah nice try" are f*cking as*holes! This man thought someone hurt his dog and he wanted to show his love for his pet by getting the sam etat. I think it's a beautiful story and is super sweet. I'm happy the dog is with a loving owner now, poor baby. Also whether that tat was from a vet or not, that is still mean and cruel to do to an animal and it's in such a sensitive area on his belly.
well that dog had some balls to go and get a tattoo like that, fair play.
I would never make fun of someone who rescued a dog to give him love and a wonderful life. From the way it looks on the pictures he and his dog are very close. So, what if he didn't know what it meant..? Who cares..?!? He can have the tat changed easily. I agree that he shouldn't have defended himself because it was obvious that he didn't know. But the thought of his to get the same tattoo as his canine companion is super sweet nonetheless...
What's important is a dog was rescued and finally given a forever home...I'm amazed still the stupid s**t people go on about on social media.." Bob farted in class today", " no way dude I'm "shook", it was Tom that farted"!!! Get a life people!!
Who gives a RATS A*S what tattoo some man got and whether or not he knew the meaning????!!!!
I work with Military Working Dogs, and they have ID tattoos on the inner ear. Pretty normal and pain free for the doggo.
I called this bs on another site a long time ago. Why isn't there any redness on the "tattoo" if it was just done?
Well there is kind of a glare in the photo so you might just not be seeing the redness. Also, not all tattoos get that red. I have about 20 tattoos and not all of them turned red or anything. (most did, but not all) Not arguing, just offering another angle to look at. :)

Hey guy now you too must be neutered...be the only way someone of the opposite sex would date you....cease spreading your genes please for the sake of humantity, we need no more morons being born...
Sorry guy you are busted I bet the tatoo artist was laughing inside..bet the artist knew what it meant. You did not.... Hey with you lying like that I bet you belong to the DEMORATIC party...you should run for office in CA they will vote any moron into office.
Maybe he knew, maybe he didn't but he did it because he loves the dog - that is all that matters!
Why would a male animal need a tattoo the miss parts are clearly visible, I can see a female needing one all my cats have a green tattoo on their belly, Wild cat and dogs females get a that get catch and then released again, get's the tip of their ear docked so if they get caught again who ever caught them knows they have been fixed,.. So dude give it another try, And if I saw a animal with that tattoo I would assume the animal was fix being they are missing something,
I’ve never heard of a neutered male getting tattooed, since it’s pretty obvious there’s nothing hanging out back. I could understand the tattoo if it was a furry breed that would be difficult to tell at a glance; however, any veterinarian worth their pay would know how to check!! All females should have a tattoo to indicate they’re spayed. My dog has a small dot on her abdomen. She certainly doesn’t have a huge female symbol with a line through it. Someone else mentioned cats and the difficulty telling if males have been neutered. Yes, it’s difficult, especially longer haired cats. But again, a professional should be able to tell with a simple non-invasive exam. (Well, it’s invasive if you’re the cat, I guess. 😘)
His sentiment was 100% in the right place, but I'm pretty sure he had no idea what the tattoo meant (he talks about how cruel the previous owners were) and ended up trying to cover it up once he realized he had made a fool of himself. Poor guy. Oh, well! It makes for a nice story!
If he knew what the tattoo meant then why did he complain that some previous mean owners had cruelly tattooed the dog? If he knew what it meant then he should know the circumstances under which it is given. Kudos for his love for his dog, but his story doesn't ring true.
Kind of reminds me of a woman who rejects a man and the man says, well you're fat anyway.
This whole story is just weird. For one thing no one should have to ask or need to see a tatoo proving that a male dog is neutered. Hello........ does he have balls or not ??? This is not a difficult question to answer. Second, this guy is a dork and why is he wearing a girls shirt and a necklace in the first photo ? Look you did a lame thing in front of the internet, the least you can do is own it.
So the guy is "disgusted" the dog has a tattoo and then decides to tattoo himself with the same image. I thought tattoo parlors wouldn't tattoo a person who was intoxicated or had an IQ below 50?
I personally like it. A lot of women would probably love this, thinking that it meant he's had a vasectomy lol!
Geez, they should give the guy a break. I think he should get the "spayed" tattoo beside it in support of spaying/neutering pets. People need to be reminded of the importance of getting their pets fixed. Some people try to argue that they're responsible, that they won't let the dog (or cat) cause a litter, but the funny thing is that *everyone* thinks they are responsible enough to do all kinds of things they aren't at all capable of following through on and all it takes is one tiny accident (a friend who doesn't have pets holds the door open just a few seconds too long, your dog climbs a 6' fence in no time because the neighbor's dog is in heat and that can even cause neutered animals to go a little crazy, but the neutered dog won't make more puppies when millions of animal are already being killed due to overpopulation, etc.) It's a vital part of stopping the killing, along with making a lifetime commitment to every pet, every time.
Good grief, he gave a s**t about his dog and got a tattoo because he cared about his dog. Trolls are like cockroaches, that come out of the woodwork and have no life but to target others. Kudos for Chris, for caring about his dog.
Poor guy, you would think he would at least try to figure out what a symbol means before getting it tattooed. Maybe he can get an awesome doggo portrait as a coverup. Also, what sort of supposed "veterinarian" needs a tattoo to tell that a dog is neutered?
