Man Probably Thinks He’s Protecting Society’s Purity By Commenting On A Tampon Image, Makes A “Fool” Of Himself

Interview With Author
ADVERTISEMENT

Brits are rejoicing that as of January 1, 2021, there is no longer any value-added tax (VAT) on women’s sanitary products. Her Majesty’s Treasury announced the dissolution of the tax (more commonly known as the ‘tampon tax’) with a simple infographic that featured a drawing of a tampon. Libertarian radio presenter and journalist Adam Garrie created a storm on Twitter after stating that, in his opinion, the image was “obscene.”

Like you could have expected, the internet was ruthless. Twitter blew up with negative comments against Garrie. Meanwhile, the media was having a field day as well. Keep in mind that Garrie fully supports the actual policy—it’s the drawing that he has an issue with.

Bored Panda reached out to Garrie to get his take on the public’s reaction to his tweet and the broader implications this has for people’s freedom of speech due to “conformity through compulsion.” He revealed to us that he’s received “quite a few threats” for sharing his opinion online.

“If someone wants to publish photos of their genitals, bodily fluids, or anything else of that nature, I shall defend their right to do so. If someone seeks to bully me into enjoying it, I shall calmly state my entirely reasonable opposition,” he said. Read on for our full in-depth interview and be sure to let us know what you think in the comment section below, dear Readers.

Adam Garrie, who supports abolishing the ‘tampon tax,’ received a large amount of backlash after sharing his opinion about this drawing

Here’s how people reacted to Garrie’s tweet and what he answered. Quite a few people were upset with his opinion

“In an age where most schools are concerned with teaching people what to think rather than how to think, it should surprise no one when a simple and reasonable statement can arouse such a storm in a teacup. Beyond this, the remarks of many on the self-described left make something else abundantly clear. We are living in an age in which conceptions of public and private spheres have become worryingly reversed,” Garrie shared his thoughts with Bored Panda.

“Such people believe that the freedom of artistic expression, free speech, and the freedom to assemble should be contingent on the approval of a numerically small but heavily amplified mob. Simultaneous to this, they offer nothing but a whirlwind of execration for those who wish to lead their private life in a manner that is based on the teaching of traditional religions (whether Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, etc) and on the principle that one’s home is one’s castle. Not only are they comfortable with sharing photos of their bodily fluids and genitals online, but they seek to force those with personally traditional values to revel in the kind of exhibitionism which they enjoy,” he explained his position.

Garrie, who identifies as a libertarian, stated that he has no problem with other people being open about the things that would have been classified as a person’s ‘private life’ in earlier generations. However, he believes that he’s being coerced to follow a single line of thought. “I refuse to genuflect before a movement which seeks to make erstwhile private activities into a kind of public idolatry to which we must all pay tribute,” he said.

“‘To each their own,’ used to be the mantra of the liberal. Today, however, it would seem that those who disingenuously call themselves liberals have adopted the Maoist principles of conformity through compulsion. In other words, it is not just enough to tolerate one’s point of view (which myself and other libertarians certainly do), but one must publicly endorse it or else be treated as some sort of criminal.”

Garrie continued: “In this sense, my opposition to a piece of crude government propaganda has been most educational. I have seen first hand the intolerance, bigotry, and sexism of those who want all men and all women to think alike. I believe in individual liberty and I shall continue to oppose all those who want to enforce a single point of view on others.”

The radio presenter also had a warning that the political situation might shift in the future; he was open that he’ll be on the frontlines fighting against any censorship, whether enforced by the left or the right.

“To those who revel in the fact that the leftist elite are currently in power, I shall say this: one day, the extreme right may take power and become the new elite. If they do, they shall seek to censor you. As a classical liberal, I shall defend you against them when and if they take power. The words of John Donne ought to toll heavily in the ears of those who think that censorship and bullying is a one-way street. It is certainly not.”

Garrie also said that he’s gotten “multiple unsolicited photos” of people’s genitals and bodily fluids as part of the backlash on Twitter.

And here’s what some other people on Twitter had to say

In short, Garrie, like most of his critics, believes that abolishing the tax was a positive thing, but he personally objects to broadcasting ‘an image conjuring thoughts of bodily fluids’ on a government channel. In other words, he has different standards for government social media accounts than for private ones.

Some people started calling Garrie’s face “obscene” while others even suggested sending Garrie tampons. Just remember—even if you don’t agree with Garrie’s position, it’s no reason to threaten him. So keep it classy, Pandas.

According to the UK Government’s website, the decision to abolish the ‘tampon tax’ is part of wider action to End Period Poverty that includes rolling out free sanitary products in schools, colleges, as well as hospitals.

He finds a slightly curved piece of string 'overly suggestive' - seriously, how does this person cope with everyday life? Must be offended every five seconds. Pathetic prat.

I am upset by the fact that the tampon tax is a thing in most U.S. states. I am confused why sanitary supplies are not considered essential everywhere. But I have also seen the posts where men ask why we don't "hold it in until we reach the bathroom", so...

That just proves how important teaching everyone the basics of human biology is - either in human biology classes or as sex education. Don't care what you call it (I had both classes in the UK) people need to know about it so that they don't have stupid and impossible expectations.

Is there anyone else who can't figure out WHY he finds the string offensive/obscene ? I read the piece twice and although English is not my first language I'm pretty sure I understand it correctly. He keeps rambling on about liberals, choices, freedom, bodily fluids, genitals, etc, from which none has anything to do with the add or the image. Not directly that is. I just can't figure out from the interview what he finds wrong with the string...... Anyone ???

So tampon cartoons are "obscene" because they conjure imagines of bodily fluids BUT we've used toilets as a universal sign for bathrooms for as long as i can remember. He does realize what we do/put into toilets right?!

It’s sad because this is a perfect example of these kind of people, because it’s not just online that it happens. I’m only in high school but if I need to ask my friend for a sanitary product during class, it’s like we’re exchanging illegal substances. We have to be so discreet about it because if someone sees us (that isn’t a person who menstruates) they lose their mind. I’m not really sure where all of this came about because it’s quite ridiculous

Let them lose their mind - totally their problem. Pass these things to each other openly and don't let them force you to act like something natural and normal should be hidden. I assume you know they'll react this way because they have? Laugh at them.

"It conjures thoughts of bodily fluids which originate below the belt" - those fluids are blood and endometrial tissue, not exactly what most people think of a sexually arousing. But also it's something that about half the country deals with every month without a fuss.

"Publicising"? Uh, well ... well ... I'm yet to understand why american male humans make such a deal of things like buying tampons for their girlfriend ... it's just a regular product, regularly needed without any wronging around, doesn't need a prescription, doesn't even imply any medical issues that might be seen as embarrassment. I'd understand if this were about, say, adult diapers or so ... although these, too, shouldn't be something to be ashamed of buying (or needing) ... damned, guys over the pond - grow up. And this string-obsessed guy ... I don't get it. Nothing of it. Not even a bit of a bit.

The tax on feminine hygiene products in the UK went to women's charities. The money contributed to the Tampon Tax Fund raising more than £62million for charities like Eve Appeal, SafeLives, Women’s Aid, and The Haven. So I hope they're going to be given equal funding now from the government, which get its money from taxes. Hmm.

The usa loves tax. My state ct has a very high tax rate. And it keeps going up. Sanitary products. Birth control for men an women. Daily hygiene items. Soap. Water. Sewage. It's. All. Taxed. But it should just be the price of the item. Not a tacked on tax because they want the money to build a bridge an figure let's tax the tampon. Nope. It's that tampon plus the bridge. Tax tax tax.

So, you know... taxes are important. I know, it's annoying, but without taxes, you don't have schools, not health-system (oh... sorry, you're from the US, but that's how it works in other countries) and no roads, no national-parks, no goverment-employees, no military... all that stuff is paid for by taxes. I agree that some items are completely ridiculously taxed - hygiene products are not luxury items! - and sometimes the taxation is completely incomprehensible to the regular human being. But man, just put the prices on the products with the tax already included and nobody would have to care how much goes to the gvt and how much of the price remains at the shop and the producer.

As it clearly states in The Snowflake's Bible, "Here lieth the rules of public engagement, and whosoever doth deviate from these commandments doth incur the wrath of the Holy Right --- Step 1 - sayeth something stupid: Step 2 - If challenged, double down thy stupidity: Step 3 - Keeping repeating the stupid, yea even though thou art being mocked, and overlay with more stupid: Step 4 - Go silent and engage not further, but complaineth thou mightily to thy peers on other forums."

Let me throw out a broader view. I'm slightly disgusted with these commercials. Tampons, sanitary napkins, incontinence panties, form fitting knit boxers or "tighty whities", womens panties and bras. It's the lack of creativity to shill their products any other way, but showing a naked woman in a shower rubbing the latest body shower soap on herself. Whether it's suggestions in sexuality or pushing a form of hygiene, isn't there a better way? Or let's not forget snot covered laundry.

That was hysterical. I had to read halfway down the page to learn that he objected to the shape of the string. What? I hadn't even noticed the string. I mean, I did, of course, but it looked like a string and unless they are starched, strings sort of fall more or less on a sinewave. For him to get triggered about it, either he realized, too late, how misogynistic he was being and deflected to the string so he didn't have to tell the entire world that the tampon looks like a mini d**k, or he truly has a warped mind. "The shape of the string". Now I can say I have heard them all.

I genuinely don't understand the upset behind tampons (and pads) being taxed. Almost all goods we purchase are taxed, even things that are essential. Toilet paper, diapers, most groceries, other personal care items (like soap), ...nearly everything. Not trying to be a jerk or anything (I mean hey, if someone makes my tampons less expensive, great!) just honestly not following the debate. Anyone want to share their thoughts? I'd love to hear the ideas behind the topic.

What, for heaven's sake is obscene about bodily fluids?? We all have them. Yeah, we don't want them spread around as they can spread various diseases - so therefore he should see Tampons as the very opposite of Obscene, They prevent bodily fluids (like menstrual blood getting onto other things -- like seats, and undies. I see them as very similar to Handkerchiefs (tissues) and masks (in the Days of COVID) in preventing bodily fluids from getting on things for both hygiene and decency's sake

My grandmother blushed when the Playtex Living Brassiere ads came on in the 60s. As a 60s rebel and feminist, I fought for legal abortion and the end of the stigma of "babies born out of wedlock". The brouhaha over this minute issue is sooo sad. I think that my millennial daughter and friends have not only missed the point of our movement but also lost their sense of humor. And society has lost any pretense of good manners. Aren't there bigger issues worth your impassioned defense?? Like FGM or thousands of untested sexual assault kits in police warehouses? The gentleman is voicing an opinion....ok,a stupid one but move on. AND, I would've photographed a wrapped tampon, but I am hopelessly old and still bear the modicum of modesty typical of "nice girls" in my era....I also cringe at gratuitous sex on TV, just a step up from my Nana's bra ads.

Also uh... "leftist elite"? Leftism is by definition anti-capitalism and quite often anti-government, or at least anti-authoritarian. If your country has a capitalist government, like the US, then there is no "leftist elite" in it, because if so your country would not have a capitalist government anymore.

If the string in the drawing was straight, it would look like a popsicle (ice lolly). I think this guy just has a dirty mind: he is visualizing the curve of a woman's parts, and the curve that the string would assume while inside of her. Edit: when I showed my husband the original ad, he just said, "That's good. Women should get that stuff for free." When I showed him that guy's rant, he said, "Hmm. Sounds like he needs some of those tampons himself." Lol.

Hmm.

If his mother had kept sanitary products on a bathroom shelf, just like mine, for every person to see, he wouldn't have problems now. This is a piece of cotton with a string, seriously! And body fluids? What about a picture of a salivating child? What about diapers, condoms, things in all the sex ads everywhere?! He chose small, clean, useful tampons. Unbelievable.

I wonder if he had one of those earlier Christian upbringings. I had friends who'd been taught to sprinkle talc on the bath water before getting in, by the nuns, lest they should see a reflection of their genitals!!! Also, a psychiatrist i had the misfortune to work with, who adored Freud, he got distraught so often, claiming things were too phallic! Twisted minds.
