This Account Shows How Tabloids Objectify Women Celebs By Giving The Same Captions For Men (11 Pics)

We’re all used to reading snappy headlines on the Daily Mail website that objectify celebrities, debating whether they look good or not. Every single time they leave their homes and venture into the streets, the paparazzi are on them like vultures, snapping as many photos as they can. Whether the photos are flattering or frankly embarrassing, the paparazzi don’t care. Because of how tabloid culture works, their work is eaten up by avid readers worldwide either way. With people commenting on how ‘sizzling’ (or not) the celebrities look, and whether they’re dressed stylishly enough.

One Twitter account, the Daily Male Online, pokes fun at how absurdly the Daily Mail’s presents female stars by posting similar photos of male celebrities and writing up identical headlines that objectify them. The results are hilarious because they show how unflatteringly women are treated by tabloids everywhere, and that double standards do, in fact, exist in popular media.

The Daily Male is an up-and-coming Twitter account with over 560 followers. Among the stars the account uses to make fun of tabloid culture are ex-California governor and movie legend Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that tabloids everywhere have clear double standards when it comes to how they present male and female celebrities to the public. After all, tabloids are, first and foremost, businesses. They do whatever brings them the most profit. And readers, clearly, respond to what tabloids do. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether this says anything about our society (or human beings) as a whole.

The Huffington Post wrote about a video called “The Experiment” where writer Kate Hardie and lighting technician Andy Lowe illustrate that these double standards are far from a myth. The pair cut out pictures of men and women from the popular British daily newspaper The Sun and showed just how different they really are when compared side by side.

“The men are nearly all active, doing things. Not posed… the women are passive. It’s all about how they look,” Hardie and Lowe explain in the video. “When I look at the men’s side, I see real life. But when I look at the women’s side, it doesn’t seem real. It’s all manufactured.”

As Hardie and Lowe explained, tabloids rely on stereotypes: women were traditionally seen to be valued for how they look, while men are valued for what they do. The Guardian writes that, at least in Britain, newspapers subscribe to ‘sexist’ stereotypes by posting ‘humiliating’ pictures of women. According to The Guardian, this may have something to do with the fact that 78% of all front-page articles were written by men.

What do you think of tabloid culture as a whole? Do you think female celebrities are treated unfairly? Which one of The Daily Male’s headlines did you like best? Let us know in the comments below.

Here’s how the internet reacted to the Daily Male Online’s posts

This hate filled ,conspiracy filled right wing bag of shite is one of the most disgusting things in our messed up county. If you are trying to make a point, you DID, but not the one you hoped for, I think. FIRST, Reynolds does look casual cute. BUT you keep captioning knee length shorts as if they are showing off a lot of leg, and the same with cleavage. The facts don’t fit the pics... if you want to change the way people see things, maybe we should start by changing what they see?

I like the concept but rather than objectifying them like women, they should have objectified them like men to really stick the point. The one about Arnold comes across as more lighthearted and funny, while the one about Matt Damon or The Rock makes more sense and actually objectifies them rather than mimicking how women are objectified. Regardless of my criticism, I really like the concept and point they are making.

So what? Why having a double standart specifically by gender? What if we treated badly ppl with blue eyes, or with shoe size 40, or for having a curly hair etc. It would be ridiculous, bc this is not a real reason to threat ppl badly. But we accepted to threat humans with vaginas badly like it's something which impacts all aspects of life. Well, it doesn't. Does blue eyes impact my learning and working performance? But for no reason we decided vaginas impact math performance. It is ridiculous and makes no sense. It's time to leave this behind.

Well, since the manhating sjws seem to be out to get me anyhow... I'm a woman. It's women who click and read about women celebrities. It's women who write those magazine articles. It's women who make fun of other women. You can deny it all you want. You can downvote me all you want. Deep down you know it's true. If not, my sincerest condolences to you for whatever f'd up thing that happened in your life. I guarantee it doesn't compare to my experiences, but I won't blame every man / woman / family member for those experiences. Grow the f up and quit whining.

The reason women objectify themselves is bc since very young age we are indoctrinated that the goal of our existence is to please male's eyes and serve male's needs. So we put the focus on everything which compromise this purpose. The way to truly oppress someone is to make him believe it's his job to follow and preserve the rules that oppress. And even if the oppressed one sees through this to feel shame for following the rules and stay silent. That's how ppl are being prevent from taking action and cause change. The first step for solving a problem is to admit there is a problem. Not to search for a way to excuse the problem. Or you continue to be stuck into denial and do nothing for change. That's why opression has such deep roots and is hard to be resolved.

Yes your point is valid in that the media does objectify men too but it is not nearly to the same degree as they do women. I honestly can't tell if you are being sarcastic on the second part of your comment or making a statement. Men and women can and do have the same interests and sometimes they don't. It depends on the individuals not as a blanket statement over the either of the entire genders.

Just counted all the flaunts on the home page, it’s a slow day with only 10 people flaunting something while one bugger CONTINUES to show off their weight loss.

some of these sound like compliments- but I guess nothing is a compliment when it's a picture taken without your consent, and you have to worry about being watched all the time. also none of the comments were about what they accomplished as people- just how they looked... and nothing else.

These look like headlines I read on GAY BLOGS all the time. BTW: Arnold is 72. There aren't many 72-y/o women who would get that headline, and with his bustline, it's kind of hilarious!

Many tabloids do it and it’s time for them to just stop. It’s all utter nonsense anyway. Daily mail and new idea are the two worst culprits I can think of. They wouldn’t know a decent article if it hit them in the face.

The Daily Mail has become a national joke here in the UK with it's attention grabbing sensationalist headlines that often bear no relevance to the subject they refer to. They embody the worst of the tabloid press with their blatant sexism, racism and homophobia.

I’d like to see these exact comments that were made of women, then I will be concerned. Otherwise this is just making light of objectifying men, as always. It’s ok to do it to men but not women

Difference between men and women... If you objectify or sexualize us WE LIKE IT. It does not make use less smart to have a tight a*s, nor are we less clever if our breasticles are firm and on point. Here is a novel thought for you ladies... you can be attractive AND smart..... it 's a very sexy combination

Of course the Daily Mail's objectification of women is reliably ludicrous, but I have to wonder if it isn't at least partly motivated by the desire to push the sales of women's clothing and accessories, especially of their advertisers. ...oh, who'm I kidding; they're just a bunch of sexist sh*ts.

Takeaway: if you are outside and have failed to diligently cover every inch of your skin, you are automatically "flaunting" stuff and stuff WILL BE JUDGED. I have no contact with tabloid media in my daily life, is that why I actually had a physical reaction of disgust reading this?

From what I've seen, most tabloids seem to hate celebrities, and enjoy making up ridiculous BS about them out of some kind of jealousy. That, and blowing news stories out of proportion, or worshiping certain crazy world leaders...

As a British person there are many things I am ashamed of, how we colonised and murdered indigenous people in far away lands and forced religion on them, Brexit and the daily mail. This hate filled ,conspiracy filled right wing bag of shite is one of the most disgusting things in our messed up county. It legitimises right wing views, portrays foreign people as evil, and woman as objects. It gives a voice to hate speech and yet its considered main stream.

The real Daily Fail newspaper is not classed as a tabloid. It is rightly known as "gutter press". It's neo-nazi and shameless yet it remains the biggest selling newspaper in the UK. :(

It is interesting that they try to make a feminist case out of this. Does no one notice that it is utterly weird to make, look at, and comment photos of people in their private life, be they famous or not? Regardless of gender, age, context etc.
