I live in Florida where the goal seems to be to pave the state... our motto should be "One State, One Slab of Concrete". A lovely wooded area, with many stately old oaks, was just cleared in my neighborhood for a medical office building. My neighbors cut down two majestic oaks that shaded the whole street, paved their front lawn, and parked trucks on it. It makes me so sad. I am moving away from here, it's just too heartbreaking.

I found the empty lot where my grandfather lived as a boy in Beaufort, South Carolina. The house was gone, but a tree like that was there. I like to think he and his sibs spent time in that tree. (The house was torn down by a developer. He moved another house off the land, tore down my family's house, then went bankrupt. Such a waste. The picture I saw of the house was almost as beautiful as this tree.

Someone will not. This tree is most definitely protected by a Heritage Tree ordinance, which prohibits the cutting of trees deemed irreplaceable due to their age. Given the size and beauty of this tree and how it is clearly located in some sort of park designated around it, if someone tried it, they'd likely have the wrath of not only city officials, but the entire population of citizens as well.

Also, the age doesn't define the look. There's 500 year old oaks in our forests that look straight as a ruler with no rrachable branches on the trunks. It depends on how much space and light they got when growing. There's 100 year old oaks on meadows and fields that look like this because they grew up without competition.

We're releasing this list on a special occasion. Almost exactly 50 years ago, on June 5-16, 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (also known as the Stockholm Conference) was held in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the UN's first major conference on international environmental issues, and marked a turning point in the development of international policies.

When the participating 122 countries — 70 of them considered to be developing and poor — adopted the Stockholm Declaration, they essentially committed to 26 principles and an action plan that set in a multilateral environmental regime.

One of the overarching principles was that sovereignty should be subject to not causing harm to the natural world of other countries as well.

In a way, the planet's environment and natural resources became a common resource with countries resetting their relationship with nature — from sovereignty over resources to shared responsibility for their sustainable uses.

The key agreements of the Stockholm Declaration were:

Earth's natural resources, including air, water, land, flora and fauna, especially representative samples of natural ecosystems, must be safeguarded for the benefit of the present and future generations through careful planning or management.

The discharge of toxic substances or of other substances and the release of heat, in such quantities or concentrations as to exceed the capacity of the environment to render them harmless, must be halted in order to ensure that serious or irreversible damage is not inflicted upon ecosystems. The just struggle of the peoples of ill countries against pollution should be supported.

The Stockholm conference started the contemporary "environmental era." In many ways, it took governance of planetary concerns to the mainstream. This resulted in over 500 multilateral environmental agreements being adopted in the last 50 years.

In fact, most of today's conventions related to planetary crises like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the whole environmental regime being implemented through the UN system trace their origin to the Stockholm Declaration.

The world is all tuned in to the Stockholm+50, to be held in the same city in June, but with a vastly changed planet, notwithstanding the rooting of the multilateral environmental regime.

On June 2-3, instead of discussing how the past half-century lived up to their previous vision, world leaders will talk about the next 50 years and the emergency actions that our planet so desperately needs.

"Human development is largely fuelled by a tripling in the extraction of natural resources, food production, and energy production and consumption over the past 50 years," says an advance draft copy of the document to be discussed at Stockholm+50.

A visualization of the next 50 years, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on May 4, 2020, states that "1 to 3 billion people are projected to be left outside the climate conditions that have served humanity well over the past 6,000 y [years]."

The study explains how humans have resided in a “climatic envelope” characterized by ~11˚C and 15˚C of mean annual temperature and “the geographical position of this temperature niche is projected to shift more over the coming 50 y than it has moved since 6000 BP [before present]”.

According to Tim Lenton, co-author of the study, the situation looks unbelievable to many. Areas in North America and Europe that have comfortable temperatures would become as hot as North Africa. Tim warns: "Where we are headed is a place we don't want to go."

Let's hope that Stockholm+50 will come up with something that will ensure both humans and all the critters that we see on 'The Fabulous Weird Trotters' will get to keep our homes.
