Dog Waits For His Owner In A Wuhan Hospital Not Knowing He Died From Covid-19 Months Ago

There’s nothing in this world quite like dog loyalty, but this story goes above it. It all started when an elderly man who fell ill with coronavirus was taken to Wuhan Taikang Hospital in Hubei Province, China back in February. Sadly, he passed away 5 days later.

But his dog Xiao Bao, the 7-year-old mongrel, was not giving up. According to the hospital cleaner Zhu Youzhen, 65, the boi waited in the hospital lobby for his owner to return. The days passed, but Xiao Bao, whose name means “Little Treasure,” refused to leave. After three months, the Taikang hospital staff started getting complaints about Xiao roaming the corridors. He was then handed to the Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association, where he hopefully found a new forever family. And no, I am not crying, you are.

According to NY Post, Wu Cuifen, who runs the store on the first floor of the hospital building, said that after Xiao Bao’s owner was admitted to hospital due to Covid-19 complications, she tried to send the dog away.

The woman commented: “Then he passed away, but Xiao Bao didn’t know and just stayed in the hospital looking for him. He never left the hospital. It was incredibly touching, and so loyal.”

But Wu bonded with Xiao Bao and later brought him to the store. She told the reporters that “although Xiao Bao can’t speak, we understand that he is definitely still looking for his owner.”

This is similar to the Futurama episode where the dog waited every day for his owner to return

The Futurama episode is based on a true story. There's a statue of the original dog in Japan. The dog's name: Hachikō.

No, of course I am not crying. Good luck to Xiao Bao, who really is a little treasure. I hope he finds the best home where he will be loved and pampered. The little guy certainly deserves it.

My dads dog was with him when he died. It took her a month to get out of her depression. She still would check for him to get out of his van when I would come home from work or the store. She knew he was gone but she had some hope, for seven years. The weekend before I put her down, I believe he came for her, because of how she acted in the yard one day. I miss her with all my heart but I know Kathy is with him and happy.

Heartbreaking. Man, I really hope I'll never die before my dog. My current one is so strongly attached to me, she would have an incredibly hard time to adjust to a new place. She was only eight weeks old when I bought her and for about two years she got really excited when she saw a silhoutte of a boy that looked like the son of the family she was born into.

What's the point of this, huh? It is just painful. It is the saddest thing I can possibly think of. We don't deserve dogs. We don't deserve animals at all really.

He should have been allowed to say goodbye. It has been known for a dog to lie on a perons grave for years while living with a new owner. Very sad.

So moving! :'( I have always been afraid of dogs since I was little (traumatic experience) but lately they've been winning me over by how loyal and loving they can be. Better than most human beings I think. I would love to adopt one one day (I'm working on my phobia)

The dog will wait endlessly for his deceased human being... In a different situation, a person(s) will just abandon an elderly or ill dog at a shelter or on the street, without a thought or care. Animals deserve so much better than they get from a lot of people...

Given the horrors that the Chinese inflict on dogs, the best we can hope for is that they killed him humanely. But, that is giving them too much credit. In the US, someone would have adopted him quickly.
