Loyal Employee Decides To Never Give His Employers 2 Weeks Notice About Leaving A Job After A Company Refused To Pay Him For His Unused PTO
When we have a job we love, we want to do it as best as we can. If it’s a profession you have been thinking about having when you were little and then went to get an education to be able to pursue that career, you care about finishing tasks and going the extra mile to make sure everything’s done.
Sadly, not every employer will acknowledge your hard work and may even stab you in the back disregarding all the loyalty you’ve shown. This happened to Reddit user radicalbamboozl who was told they will not be paid for the PTO they accumulated after they gave in their 2 weeks notice.

The Original Poster (OP) radicalbamboozl worked for a big-box retailer in the US in their corporate IT department. He remained in the company for over 2 years and was a hardworking employee who did everything he was asked.
He was with the company during the pandemic and witnessed how it suffered greatly because they lost hundreds of their overseas colleagues who were quite important for the company to function.
He worked for the company for 2 years and was doing his best without disobeying management

It meant that the department was understaffed so the employees who remained were given a 3-times bigger workload from that point and sometimes they had to take later night shifts which led to working to the point of burnout.
The saddest part is that the company didn’t care that they were overworking their employees and didn’t even compensate them properly. The OP said that he received a raise every year which was less than a coffee would cost and when he earned some bonuses, they didn’t look that impressive after taxes.
The OP knew for a fact that the company was able to afford bigger salaries and bigger bonuses because the executives would tell the employees themselves how well they are doing with the sales increasing by 200 percent.
During the pandemic, he was working overtime, longer shifts, and had a bigger workload because the company lost a lot of important employees

Luckily, this year, radicalbamboozl got an offer to start another job as a first-year apprentice. The new job offered a 36-percent bigger starting salary and guaranteed raises. Not only that, it was a job with a Union offering other benefits such as pension.
After getting the offer, the OP gave in his 2 weeks notice at his current job as a courtesy and asked if he would be paid his PTO. Over the time he spent at the company, the OP accumulated 80 hours of paid time off but hasn’t used them, so logically, he was expecting to be paid for them.
To his surprise, the company informed the employee that he won’t be paid for the hours he didn’t use for time off. In the comments, he revealed that this was completely legal as it was written in the employee handbook. What is more, in the state of Minnesota, where the OP works, employers are not required to pay employees for the accrued PTO, so the redditor couldn’t do anything but appeal to his company’s conscience.
He tried to remind them of how loyal he was and he probably mentioned how hard he worked when there was a lack of employees in the company, he pointed out that he was giving them notice when he wasn’t obliged to, but the HR was heartless.
Recently, the OP got a job offer that he decided to take and gave in his two weeks notice

The OP realized one thing from his experience, which was to warn other employees that before leaving a job in advance, they should make sure they take their PTO and quit on the last day because his honesty didn’t pay off.
While you may think that the OP is entitled to his payment, in the US, companies aren’t even required to provide their employees with paid time off at all by federal law. No state laws require that either and about half of the states permit the use-it-or-lose-it policy.
When companies do have a PTO policy, on average, employees get 10 days a year, according to the U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics. The longer the employee stays at a company, the more PTO days they will get: on average extra 3-4 days every 5 years.
For comparison, European Union countries are required by law to ensure every employee has at least 20 paid vacation days every year. Countries like Kuwait, Malta, Panama, Ukraine and many others provide even more paid days off and they also require employers to pay for public holidays.
As he later realized, it was a mistake because the company’s policy was that if you don’t use your PTO, you lose it and he wasn’t even allowed to use it after announcing his resignation

With such a system, it is no wonder why the OP would want to hide the fact he is quitting a job. People in the comments felt really sorry this happened to him and suggested not coming to work the last two weeks or calling in sick to use up the PTO.

Share on FacebookDon’t save up PTO, just use it. And don’t over work yourself for a company, they dont care and will only take advantage of you till you snap and leave. It’s not your problem they are short staffed. This is a hard lesson to learn sometimes.

Some companies will just do the bare minimum of what they're legally required, and they'll still try to test their limits.
I run a small business. My written policy is that employees can't accrue more than 4 weeks of PTO. More than that reverts to disability pay or the employee loses it. Two reasons. I want them to take PTO so they don't burn out and are happier employees due to work/life balance. Reason number 2 is can't afford to pay an employee more than 4 weeks of salary while going also paying their replacement. But we TALK about it. When they are hired and periodically we go over the leave policy.
Always give the bare minimun to a company. There is no incentive/reason under capitalism to work hard as working hard and efficiently is always punished by capitalists with more work. Work slowly and avoid doing work outside your job description. The second you start doing work outside your job description is the second the capitalists will fire your colleagues and pile their workload on you to reduce costs. The capitalists don't care about you or me. They only care about their profit margins.
Read your company’s policies and your jurisdiction’s laws. Don’t expect them to give you one penny more than you are entitled to. If they try to short what you are entitled to, get a lawyer or even threaten to get one. The thing is, almost no disputes with your employer go to court, they almost always settle because they know that running up legal bills is more expensive than paying you to go away.
I worked for a company for almost ten years. Vacation time and sick time accrued separately and would be updated every May. Vacation time was use-it-or-lose-it annually but sick time carried over. On the date that benefits recycled, I asked HR (this was a while ago so we called it "personnel") if I would still be paid for vacation if I gave notice. I was told that I would, so I gave my manager notice. I got the 160 hours of vacation time I had coming, but not the 190 hours of sick time. I'd known for a while that I wanted to quit, so in hindsight, I would have taken at least a few sick days prior to giving notice. On my next job, we had PTO that could be used as vacation, sick or personal time, but could also be cashed out without taking time off. I don't remember forfeiting any of that when I quit. I do see giving notice as a courtesy rather than a must, but there are often ways to get your money without skipping it.

This us why I'm my own boss these companies doesn't appreciate there good employees when they do luck up with some..... An they wonder why alot of folks doesn't want or care to work for these companies nowadays its totally modern day slavery in my opinion they can have it I'm not a machine it's not worth my health or taking time from my family at all so I Now work for my self an much happier not having to answer to a swelled headed management i have had a much worse experience but i learned alot an i thank God.😁🤗
Conduent in Oregon does this s**t. They robbed me of $750 PTO and holiday pay, and then had the balls to invite me to reapply a few months later. I told them I would consider it if they were willing to reinstate my PTO and Holiday pay, but I knew that was a lost cause. I told them in conclusion, I had checked the weather report and there was no mention of hell freezing over, and as far as I could tell pigs remained grounded.
I also just learned that lesson the hard way, so angry about give my two weeks notice working hard and not given my PTO. Please be sure to check out the company policy and the states laws!!!! Doing the right thing at work doesn't always work out 🤷🏻♀️
I realize that almost all of the paperwork a new hire gets is painfully boring to read, but it's the only way to pick up information you don't get in the hiring process. Medical trouble forced me to retire unexpectedly and my accrued leave hours kept me going until other funds started coming in, I had a lot of accumulated hours. Even 80 hours is terrible to lose, it seems like punishment for being reliable and consistent.
Here's how I understand things : companies have to give you a 2 weeks notice if they fire you, but you don't have to if you resign. It's just expected of you want recommendations, but it don't think it matters that much (depending of the field of work)
Could the new employer have taken the OP sooner? If so, upon learning of the current/old employer’s PTO policy, the OP should have called the new employer about beginning work there sooner, started work there that day and handed in a revised resignation effective immediately because of the PTO policy.
Wait, if they refuse to pay you for the remaining PTO, you can just spend your notice in PTO, right? Is your country so ugly that leaving your job just * cancel * your PTO? There are ugly things in my country too, but lately I'm horrified by yours. Kuddos to you 🤗

Because I was so called essential worker (IT guy who knows it all) I gave a year-ish notice. I wanted to be fair and have a time to train a replacement. I learnt it was a mistake when I got skipped on an annual pay rise and when I was denied a reimbursement for a conference I attended (and was told I would be fully reimbursed for). Lesson learnt.

Bit of an eye roller, guy with a nice job that gets fairly good raises and PTO quits for better job. Having worked for some large companies it was amazing if they gave raises, the largest pay increase I ever heard was 50cents raises are rare and normally 5-25 cents. Pto is a nice little perk. You sign up for a job, you do the job, not complain because you want the rules to change.

It shouldn't matter whether someone is senior skilled employee or, as you disparagingly call them, a low skilled "grunt". In the civilised world the right to paid leave is protected in law for ALL employees. What the OP described would be straight up illegal in most, if not all European countries.
