All the job opportunities, plenty of places to pick for dinner, and endless options for weekend activities are some of the shiniest gems the city has to offer. No wonder so many young (and sometimes old) people are drawn to the metropolitan glam. Amongst those who are most eager to join the big city life are those hailing from humble beginnings in small towns, all ready to escape the isolated areas where it feels like everyone's living in your backyard. However, you can't truly escape the small city aura no matter how far away you run. In a way, it's in your blood.
That's why one of the best ways to deal with things you dislike about living in a small town is to laugh at them. Despite big cities seemingly offering more opportunities for people, the rural areas of America are not entirely dying out. In fact, studies show that there is a surge of people (including younger generations) that move away from the big cities in search of affordable housing and quiet lifestyle. There is a high school near Dayton, Ohio where a good majority of the teachers and admin are relatives to me in someway. I ran into someone who went there when I was in college and it felt like I was taking attendance at a family reunion. The irony is that all my cousins including myself had no plans of become teachers but fell into the profession and happily never looked back. So even now that school could have a majority of my relatives. Hehe..we're either farmers or teachers no matter how hard we try to escape our fate...but we love it!

My keyboarding teacher taught my dad keyboarding 30 years before. From what I heard that same teacher is still teaching keyboarding to this day.

I just moved back to the small village where I was born. My aunt was my teacher when I was a kid and now my cousin (her daugther) will be my son's teacher in a couple of years. I was waiting for my son the other day and spoke to multiple teachers and school employees who either knew me when I was a kid or were my classmates. It's crazy.
I live in a big city, and part of the southside is really like a small city. I had several teachers in junior high and high school who also had my dad and aunt. I learned to answer to whichever name I got called really quick.
My oldest son's English teacher freshman year was calling role and, when she called his name, asked if he was related to "XX". My son quietly said "I'm his son." She couldn't hear him so asked again. So my son repeated it "I'm his son....but I take after my mom." This teacher tried to keep his dad from graduating because she claimed he failed her class because he didn't hand in a paper (he did; was able to prove it and did graduate). Anyway, my son got straight "A's" in the class so she declared that he did, indeed, take after me (I had been an English major before switching to nursing).
You end up teaching your ex-boyfriend's younger brother. AWKWARD! (Only subbing for day thank goodness)
This is so, so true. Every teacher my older siblings had, I had. And with the exception of 2 or 3 teachers who were elderly when I had them and had retired, my oldest child had all of my teachers as well. We had AWESOME teachers who loved their subject with a passion and imparted that passion to the students. The students who were smart enough to pick up on that passion came out of that experience so much the better for it.

Many moons ago when I was young I jumped into our pond to save one of our ducks that had a huge tear in her side. My Dad decided to give her stiches( he did great, she went on to live a long health life) . He mentioned it to one of his friends. A few weeks later the story came back around to him that he jumped into the pond to save me and then he gave ME stitches. Gotta love living in a small town.

I grew up a couple of miles outside of a town of about 1000 folks where the 50 or so folks in my area, considered it their own town. I live in a town of about 20K now where the folks from the nearest major city feel that I must live in a tent.

I grew up in a biggish city (big enough that some areas are like living in small towns) and you see the same thing. Lived in many small cities as an adult and always had to find someone to translate the local drama so I wouldn't make any faux pa's.

The last town I lived in was so small that it had to share a school system with two other neighboring small towns. There was only one restaurant and two small grocery stores among them (none in my town) and if you wanted to go to a different restaurant or grocery store, you had to go to the nearest large town.

I'm from a small town, population 700. Recently did a walkthrough of my childhood home, which is up for sale. Shared the story and photos on the town FB page and got dozens of comments from people who remembered me and my family. We moved to a different town FORTY years ago. I LOVE my small town.
Neighborhoods in large cities are just like small towns. I can sit at my desk and hear someone walking down the street and know who it is. You recognize cars by their sound. You know how much people drink by their recycling bin. You know who is having boyfriend/girlfriend problems. You always see your neighbors at the local diner/restaurant/news agent. Everyone knows everyone's business.

Maybe a "small" or "large" thrown in for scale, but that's it. It's different all over, but the basics are taht towns are small and cities are big. You place have 2,000 people? Town. 200,000? City. Growing up I never once heard any place here referred to as a village. It goes by population.
