Many of us grew up with Disney cartoons like DuckTales, Aladdin, Toy Story, and heaps more! So, whenever there’s something new in the works at Disney, it’s always an exciting blast from the past!

Back in May of 2017, ABC (in collaboration with Disney) announced “The Little Mermaid Live!”, a live adaptation of the 1989 musical film “The Little Mermaid”. The 2-hour special will finally be aired on November 5, 2019 as part of The Wonderful World of Disney brand. ABC has unveiled the first official photographs of the cast in character.

“The Little Mermaid Live!” stars Auliʻi Cravalho as Ariel, the young mermaid princess of Atlantica with a keen interest in humans. She is joined by Graham Phillips as Prince Eric, the traveling prince saved by Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula, the sea witch antagonist who steals Ariel’s voice, Shaggy as Sebastian, the advisor crab of King Triton, Ariel’s father, and John Stamos as Chef Louis, Prince Eric’s chef who tries to cook Sebastian as he loves seafood.

The new musical adaptation will mark the 30th anniversary of the original animated movie. Serving as a celebration, the live broadcast of the animated Disney tale will include music from the film and the musical and will jump between live musical performances and the animated movie itself.

The musical production is done by Done and Dusted, a television production and event staging company, best known for their work with various world-wide awards ceremonies. The team will include the talented Hamish Hamilton, Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor, Ian Stewart, and Richard Kraft.

“The Little Mermaid Live!” will feature fascinating sets and costumes by award-winning designer Zaldy. Choreography is done by Nick Florez and RJ Durell who also directed and choreographed P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma world tour, Katy Perry’s Superbowl performance, and Ariana Grande’s and John Legend’s Beauty and the Beast.

Ursula was originally based on Divine - a drag queen that the animators caught perfectly. She's an over the top, voluptuous, cheerfully evil charactor. Queen Latifah is the only person that I think could capture that live.

But Queen Latifah is not purple. Why change the characters who i grew up with, i demand a purple Ursula or I will not see this movie.

People do realise that Fabulous was making a joke right? It's a joke about how people can get offended when characters are represented differently from what is expected.

Is Bored Panda a subsidiary of Disney? There are a lot of promo tie-ins to all things Disney on here.

I love the posters, especially the ripples in the water. Queen Latifah is going to be incredible as always and I have no doubt that Shaggy is just going to be himself as Sebastian. I can't wait to see it - if it comes to the UK!

A young John Stamos would've made the PERFECT Prince Eric! Although he doesn't really look like he's aged much anyway.

I was worried when I first heard of the live-action remake in the fear that would be just another "live-action remake". While "Maleficent" was the one that started it off, that version was looking at the background of the fairy tale itself, especially the uncomfortable parts concerning archaic sexual dynamics. Two things concerning the original Disney movie need to be addressed. (cont.)

[2] "Vanessa": While a relationship was established between the Transformed Mermaid and the Prince, he still married the Princess. We do not necessarily need Ursula involved in this as such politics was the norm, where both "Sleeping Beauty" and "Rapunzel" had the titular Disney Princesses as the "other women" kept by the men who eventually lived "happily ever after" with them in the original fairy tales. The difficulty of middle-class (let alone lower-class) women marrying upper-class men is still present with just Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle recently. Besides, having Jodi Benson ("Ariel" AND "Vanessa") as the mother of Eric's betrothed MANIPULATED by Ursula would be interesting.

I thought there was a whole thing about the main charactr being played by a black girl; did they change the actress or was it just much ado abut nothing ? Also, then why is no one complaining about Ursula ?
