As much as we would like for people to have equal income and be equally financially stable, the world doesn’t work that way. Some professions require an education, while others don’t, some professions are more dangerous than others and some of them come with a bigger responsibility than the rest, so the ones that require more are compensated more generously.
But even that’s not always the case. Reddit user glasswitch88 who works as an administrative assistant at a law firm shared her interaction with her boss when she said to her that Target employees earn more than her.

Besides being an administrative assistant in a law firm, the Original Poster (OP) is also a single mom to a cat and she has to make her furry child’s life better. She heard that Target raised their starting wage to $24.
On Target’s official website they said, “The new approach will apply to hourly team members working in Target stores, supply chain facilities and headquarters locations, positioning Target as a wage leader in every market where it operates.” The minimum wage will still be $15, but some positions will have a higher starting salary.

The problem is that the OP earns about $23 an hour in a law firm in New York, which is less than a Target employee would. She mentioned it to her boss and the boss’ reaction was that it doesn’t matter because if they had to choose between working at a Target and working at a law firm, they would prefer an office job.
In one of the comments, glasswitch88 explained that the company surely can afford to pay her a better salary. “This firm makes millions. I have no savings and haven’t even touched my student debt. But nooooo I should be proud to work here… oh and our profits went up last year. And I got a whopping 2% raise.”

But the admin assistant didn’t think this was a good outlook because she was required to have a degree, but that didn’t reflect in her wage. It’s not that the Target employees don’t deserve a proper salary, it’s that the law firm should pay more and notice the changes in the market like Target does.
Bored Panda reached out to glasswitch88 and she said, “To be clear, I do want Target to make $24 an hour. I know it’s mostly a PR piece and only for certain NYC locations (and the veracity of that is not even clear). However, I wanted to just use the article as a way of showing my boss that times are changing and it might be time to up the base salary of support staff. If we want to attract the right employees and we require sterling resumes (people with amazing GPAs from Ivy League schools), we can’t be paying them the same wages as Target.”

It is fair that the 6th most expensive city in the world to live in would apply the new salary range in their Target stores. The OP herself opens up about her finances in one of the comments: “I live in a two bedroom apartment that’s $2200 so I pay $1100 a month, plus $100 a week in groceries (yay NYC prices) and then $200 a month in electric/gas/internet. I make about $2400 a month. So yeah. Saving is not happening.”
Another thing that the OP revealed was that she makes the same amount as the manager, but that didn’t console her as then she found out that most admins make $20k more than her.
She revealed to us that the job itself isn’t that stressful and her responsabilities include “a lot of non-billable behind-the-scenes work. She answers the phones, fields guests, and does a lot of paperwork for high-powered clients.” However, the workplace has a few problems that need to be solved, “everyone is underpaid, especially by NYC standards. When we are talking about normal rent being $2,000 for a two-bedroom, a $40,000 salary is about half a month’s paycheck. But I do know a lot of folks are in the same boat. A lot of us also only got a 3% raise which doesn’t account for inflation being around 7%.”
The admin assistant also remembers how she had to take on some extra work, but she wasn’t compensated for it, “When Covid hit I was asked to take on a lot of extra responsibilites. Basically before I was just admin, now I’m admin and HR. There was no additional pay, in fact we all got our salaries cut. We have since been reimbursed and are back to normal but I didn’t get any kind of bonus or pay increase. I’m still doing the job of two people with no end in sight.”

There is a brighter side to the story, because the OP just accepted a a position at an asset management company as an admin assistant for nearly double her current salary, which just proves that it is possible to find a better job if you dislike the one you’re currently at.
The point of the post was to talk about the unfair wages supporting staff gets because they are important pieces in the whole company picture and because they are humans, they deserve to be paid so they can live a dignified life.
Also, the problem is not Target raising their wages, but law firms being compared to a department store’s wages. A competitive salary means competitive in the same field of work and not in general. The OP mentioned that she will bring this up again before her last day at work.

As I have always said, and got downvoted for it; We should all be like mercenaries. We work for the highest bidder, always looking out for ourselves and never loyal. If you can earn $1 per hour more somewhere else, move. Because your employer is going to fire you if they can find someone who is willing to do your job for 50 cents less per hour.
That's exactly the attitude to take. I wouldn't bounce for $1 more but I have for 5-15k more. My boss once asked if I was looking and my answer was simply "Always".

I am so sick of people playing the blame game on "Boomers". We are not all totally loyal to our lifelong employers; don't always stay in a marriage because our parents did and little of the crap spewed by pissy whiners that all society ills leads back to the aging generation. Legal assistant and paralegal positions have a high turnover rate. Many do not stay until retirement. I worked at law firms. Besides the pay being a lot less than I had anticipated, even for a newbie out of school, the stress levels were through the roof. I quit it altogether. I went to work in retail for $1.50 less and a lot less stress. I’m now working on launching my own business this year. Some diplomas aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

"People would rather work at a law firm", because they are under the (apparently incorrect) assumption that it pays more than Target! Because (rightly or wrongly, mostly wrongly) the general view is that retail is not a high-paying career option, certainly not in the same way a *law firm* is viewed. Once again, we have a boss who skirts sooooo close to the point, but misses at the last second and remains willfully blind and ignorant.
I take care of mentally challenged and mentally ill adults in a group home. We do all care, hygiene, doctors appointments, and meds. Basically nursing duties without the degree. I am currently only making 14.85 an hour. It’s pitiful to only get paid so little for taking care of human beings who can’t take care of themselves . Many are often violent. We are currently in contract negotiations and they want to take MORE from us! We as employees are looking at places like target. If we aren’t going to be valued at our current employer? Then we’ll move on. People need a LIVING WAGE. We need to look our for ourselves. We need to get paid what we are worth. We all have bills and as one commentator put it, your bills don’t care where you work.
There are some complications, but you might check out something like Care.com. Not sure what your wage laws and CoL would set you at but it's possible to get a fairly stable job earning $20+/hr if you have experience and spend some time "moonlighting" to get in-app recommendations before you try to go full time, and you get to spend time with just a few people getting to know them well instead of bouncing around and answering to a manager that cares more about business than people.

Yeah, sure - Target is paying 15-24 $/hour, but they DO NOT GIVE YOU 40 HOURS/WEEK! I'm sick & tired of people getting all excited or angry about a few Target employees making more per hour on a PART TIME job than someone in a full time job. Stop thinking the Target jobs are so wonderful, please. Plus the work is not a sit-down job, you're gonna be on your feet for your whole shift (except for breaks), and stocking shelves which involves lifting & moving stuff. Heavy stuff, not just a ream of copy paper, or a stack of file folders.
Yeah, retail is obviously not all sunshine and butterflies but depending on who you are, it can beat the emotional and financial abuse of a bad boss, and in some professions "bad boss" is pretty systemic. Also, legal isn't all sunshine and butterflies either. For some people, the transition can be like the end of Office Space.

friend of mine lasted in law firm as an admin just a few months, because the salary was so shamefully low that i'm even not brave enough to write it here (plus incredible stress level) . She got triple the salary at her next job and still it was bit lower than average market salary.... Some companies have a lot of employees almost for free just because workers sometimes are too desperate, vulnerable and have no luxury of choice at time when things are tough or they need experience. Disgusting

Boomer in slang has grown to refer to a certain mentality rather than a specific age group. A "boomer" in slang can refer to an uber-capitalist who cares more about cutting costs and increasing profits than they do about supporting their workers. This is probably due to the fact that boomers (and gen Xers) seemed to latch onto characters like Hordan Gekko as their "heroes" and repeat mantras like "greed is good"... which was the exact opposite message of the film but I digress. Anyway, because of the actions of boomers in the past, the term boomer has come to refer to anyone who is an uber-capitalist that values profits over human beings. Obviously this isn't to say all boomers are like that, but a lot of boomers were very quick to buy into BS "philosophy" like Ayn Rand/objectivism that created hyper individualism and encouraged selfishness. Did this lady really just say "I'm an admin assistant so we get paid trash" at $23/hr? Talk about privilege! Being paid trash is making $11 taking care of disabled adults, which I did for six years. For more perspective, I was making $48,500 as an assistant Store manager at Walmart, which would be about $23/hr IF I worked 40 hours. I averaged more like 70 a week and so got closer to $13/hr (no overtime pay for salaried managers). For working myself to death, walking twelve miles a day around the store, working Christmas and Thanksgiving and birthdays and when injured, to be yelled at and argued with and assaulted by shoplifters. I see the point she's making, but her boss is 100% correct in that a pleasant work environment IS a job benefit. If her employer won't pay a competitive wage compared to others in her position, that's a different story, but her entire insinuation here is "I'm making less than those PEASANTS doing MANUAL LABOR and that's WRONG because I went to COLLEGE."
I was an assistant manager, employees don't show up and nobody wants to fire them. I work for a bank in the mortgage default department, customers are so mean I ended up trying to commit suicide 18 times. Put me on disability. So yeah wages are important, but very much job culture is. And she didn't address any fringe benefits she's getting and how much is your employer paying for your health care? How much is your employer offering things like daycare reimbursement and a health savings account with a loaded balance? I got these things at Bank of America. When my kids were born I was able to take paternity leave at 100% pay for 12 weeks. I don't know if that still exists. But the job was hell. I did well but like I said it took a toll Now I work as a janitor, no one bothers me or oversees my work. And I'm still getting accommodations from my manager and offered higher wages for my hard work. Just because your company makes a lot of money doesn't mean you are an effective employee.

Second, this woman wants to compare her job salary to another in a totally different profession. Companies compare like positions when setting salary ranges. This is how employment competition works. If she wants to work for Target then go work for them. And finally, she doesn't have to live in the 3rd most expensive city in the USA. She chooses to live there, so move if she can't afford it. There are plenty of less expensive places to live that also offer the same employment opportunities with the same salary.

So if she spends $1,400/month, but makes $2,400/month what is happening to that extra $1,000??? I understand there are extra expenses that she probably isn't reporting, but I can't see how she isn't able to save a little bit of money, especially if she isn't paying off her student loans at all. I'm assuming that she doesn't working full-time either. I make $2,500/month at $21/hour for a 40hrs/week job. Living in Seattle, I've had to balance a high cost of living and a high stress job with a tight budget. It's not always fun, but it is doable.
I was a Birth to 18mo. educator in a daycare. I also taught Pre-K. And just for the sake of argument, daycare educators are NOT babysitters! I was lucky to make about $21,000K a year. Talking to my husband one evening, I found out that the kids (high-schoolers) who did the cart returns, at his grocery store made more than I did!! WTH!!! I guess educating children today, no matter how old, isn't as important as making sure that shoppers have a cart waiting for them!!! It's sickening and the major reason I retired early.

Minimum wage should only be for entry level people just out of high school. If you're an adult making minimum wage, you need to find a new job. There are many jobs that pay slightly above to significantly more than minimum wage that don't require any kind of traditional higher education. Strive to get a better wage for yourself, not to increase the wage floor. Personally, I am underpaid at my job position, but I really like the group of people I work with and the job isn't too shabby, also I'm kinda lazy and have anxiety about looking for a new job.
In South Florida, palm Beach County is one on the wealthiest County's in the US. Health care organizations who are worth billions require a masters degree to be a manager yet are paying 20 per hour. they seriously expect someone to run a multi million doller per year practice for slightly above minimum wages. Then say oh no one wants to work any more. No, we just do want to grind to be broke while you get rich

At what the op claims to make in a month and a hour means they only work 26 hours a week. How about work full time, which is 3,680 at the hourly wage listed. If they are claiming 2400 after taxes then ok but they also claim they cannot have a savings with 1700 in bills…there’s 700 there, I have less than that after bills and food with a family of 7 and while it might be cheaper where I live I’m still able to put 200 a month away….. I’m not commenting the wage is low compared to peers or anything simply that the story makes no sense and reads like lazy whining from someone in my generation
They get away with it because we have such a cultural bias against people who work in blue collar jobs. We think someone who sits behind a desk in an office as someone with a "real" job, whereas people working in retail have to suffer friends and relatives asking when they're going to get their life together. That said, there are disadvantages to a retail job, and that's why places like Target are having to raise wages to attract employees. You're on your feet all day. You get mistreated and disrespected by customers. It can be hard to make plans because you usually don't have a regular schedule. You're at the mercy of managers to give you enough hours so that you qualify for benefits. You have to work weekends and major holidays. And if you do eventually decide to move on and look for a job in a field related to your degree, it might not look as good on a resume. So there are trade-offs.
Calling the boss a "Boomer". Boomers are in their 60s+. GenZ and Millenials are the new Boomers. But that aside, go where the pay is better and the stress is less. Staying at a job because of prestige? I guarantee that after working there 20 years that shortly after you leave people will rapidly forget who you were unless you are an absolute saint or complete asshat .

THIS kind of thing is why I'm advising my son AGAINST going to college. All that wasted time and money, not to mention the debt that follows you almost to your grave, and for what? For Target employees to be paid more than you? You know, college used to be a golden ticket to the Good Life. But nowadays, it just isn't worth it. Granted, this is one specific situation. But unfortunately, it's become all too common. I told my son he should go to trade school instead. Become a carpenter, a plumber, an electrician, etc. The pay is almost always good, and you're almost always in demand. Plus, trade school takes a lot less time to complete.
I really hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the most worthless thing you can do is go to college UNLESS you are going to be a doctor or a lawyer or a "hard science" scientist. You will make tons of money if you go to a "trade school" and learn to be a small engine mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, metal worker, engineer, etc. Plumbers and electricians around here earn close to 50 bucks an hour. No kidding. The single most WORTHLESS degree is "education" because they don't teach you anything and the second most worthless is an MBA. Most of the "dumbest" people I know are college students and, gawdhelpus, college graduates. Learn a "trade" and you will always, always be employed.
Yea as someone who worked at a law firm doing a paralegals job for almost 5yrs and making about $17/hr, not worth the stress. I'm back in school and graduating next semester, pre-med. Some of the girls were at $20-25 and they had been there over 10yrs. Christmas bonuses were nice though. Miss those haha. Hopefully I'll do a lot better though on my new endeavor!
It should be noted that not all people from the Boomer generation turned out to be narcissistic aholes that crap on everything like pigeons with IBS. I've known some Boomers who are actually chill and nice individuals who exercise common sense and don't look down on any of the other generations for not being like them. There are definitely some things that can be self taught if you have an interest and an aptitude for it. Some of the messaging we've had pushed on us about college degrees is bunk in my opinion and was simply pushed to get us to go in debt to the financial sector for the sake of that education. People have spent millions upon millions on getting certificates and degrees that usually end up going to waste because employers like playing this crappy, little game of wanting degrees and experience galore but not being willing to pay for what they are looking for and saying that a person with a degree will want more money so they turn them away. It's all rigged against us.
I make $31 an hour in Michigan working at a Target distribution. And I get double pay 8 hours a week that brings me up to over 1,700 a week and roughly 6k a month after taxes. Four 12 hour days. Sometimes ever a 5th if im needed. So Im making aroumd 75k a year working for Target. Thats in an area where living is much easier than NY.
Proves once again, people with college degrees are the dumbest people on the planet. "Haven't even touched my loans" this is a major issue. College educated people think it's okay to ignore payments and then wonder why rates skyrocket. It's actually amazing how stupid this college loan things is becoming. Why are you in college if you don't understand BASIC finance?
This isn't really newsworthy. How many times have we heard about THE GREAT RESIGNATION? Companies are upping pay to keep employees and attract new ones because people are reevaluating where they work and how much crap they will put up with. I'd say the law firm boss is correct. College grads will line up to put them on their resume. It's the employer's job to know what they can get away with paying and it is the employee's job to decide what they will or will not tolerate or need to earn. I have taken jobs that paid CONSIDERABLY more only to find out the facility SUCKED as did the other workers and management. The grass is not always greener and no, making $1 or $50 more an hour may not make a different job tolerable - no matter what your education level. After years of a management job, I resigned last year and went home - and no manner of $raise would have enticed me to stay. NONE. ZERO. That statement is coming from an MBA. That's right. So, stop whining and get a different job.
Wow all I do stand around and wait for my machine to go down, clean a little and press buttons I get around that much plus paid double every Sunday if I work, I can make around 5,000 + a month. I live in Nevada.
OMFG as a current Target employee, AGAIN, they didn't raise the starting rate, the raise the starting RANGE for CERTAIN POSITIONS in COMPETITIVE AREAS. The vast majority of us are still well below 24/hr, and you all are falling for Target's b******t PR stunt.
Doesn't anyone know that every time you increase minimum wage products go up inflation goes up beyond your minimum wage. You all wanted minimum wage to be $15 an hour you got that and now you want 30. Start using some logic here cuz every time you guys want this you're still broke. You complain you can't pay rent or food move to a more affordable location. The reality is most people don't get paid over $20 an hour. I have a Master's degree and made $35,000 a year on Buffalo. The logical concept is if your employer isn't offering a wage you think you deserve, then I'll definitely emphasize is a job seekers market. Negotiate your wages when you get hired. This woman who can hardly pay rent and feed her cat. Doesn't make you a parent I'm a parent I have two kids. Quitter job and now doesn't have a guaranteed source of income but won't take a job unless it pays $10,000 more than she had previously earned. That could take months, so don't quit till you have a new job.
A huge part of any job is what you can move the with experience into. For Target if you plan on working their long-term you should be looking to move up to TL then Exec TL up to Store Lead or Store Manager. You'll hit 100k+ per year easy in those positions before even considering market or regional level positions. For an a admin assistant you hopefully would be looking to complete a law degree and move up to being an actual lawyer or something beyond just admin assistant.
I figured out 30 years ago, that my job as a Banquet Server at a prestigious resort, was worth keeping. The resort is a paradise, in So Cal, with beautiful weather. All the rooms open to the outside, so we are never "stuck inside". We're union, so get medical, dental and vision benefits for next to nothing. We eat gourmet food for free, get our uniforms dry cleaned, get 4 weeks paid, 2 weeks unpaid vacation/ year, have 401k or pension ( for new employees) and best of all, my job adjusts automatically for inflation because we make a percentage gratuity on everything sold, so when the menu prices go up, I make more money. My last paycheck was $67/hr gross pay andI have saved over half a million for retirement. I feel sorry for the people at the business functions we wait on; they have to sit in meetings, (while I get my exercise) and wear uncomfortable clothes, and sometimes be away from home for the week, and many don't get paid as well as I do.
From doctors to lawyers. they're only good at 1 thing and 1 thing only, and running a business ain't it.
Almost 20 years and an assistant supt for a hotshot crew in wildland fire for the Forest Service and I barely make more than someone starting at Target. We should all probably just quit and get jobs at places like Target.

Hold up, what am I missing, you make 23$ an hour, but only make $2000 a month.... Maths not my strong suit, but I think it could be that you're not working full time, 40 hours a week, 4 weeks a month, is closer to 4000$ a month than$2000, and they ain't taxing you 50% of your income..... So, use that extra 15 hrs a week and work at target. Lol

Had this problem 30 years ago. Worked in a "Small Town" of about 50k, 40 minutes from "Big City". Management thought since we were Small Town, we didn't need Big City wages. So we'd hire someone, they'd work for 6 months, then take their trained self across the street to a branch office of a Big City company for $3 more per hour. Our management couldn't figure out why we had high turnover....
The worst job I’ve ever had was Secretary at a law school. The administration was absurdly petty and about half the lawyer faculty members were on a never-ending power-trip, and the pay was awful. I couldn’t even stick it out a year. They had high turnover and I heard that the first 2 temps they hired for my position quit with weeks.
Even 10 or 20 years ago, a good administrator in New York City could be making 60 to $80,000 and if you're not your bosses are too damn cheap find another job
The thing is, these law partners don’t get their vacation homes and cool cars by giving money to their admin assistants and paralegals. Every dime they pay is a dime that’s not in their pocket. Their priorities are themselves, first, last and always and the only thing they are loyal to.
I make$21 an hour but I love my job. I've worked retail before and I hated it. I wouldn't go back to it even if it paid me more than I'm getting more. It's not worth it to die a little inside everytime I have to go to work.
Working retail is unpredictable. Non-holiday, hours are nonexistent; holidays don't expect a day off & mandatory OT. Currently working at a law firm. Started making 30k 5 years ago now currently make about 48k. I'm going back to school for my masters to work in education as a psychologist so I can earn more. I'm used to the stress of being overworked and underpay soon I'll be getting paid fairly and still be stressed. It's insane how the support staff gets treated at some law firms. In 5 years I've worked at 3 law firms, I only stayed in one for 2 months. Worked overtime and didn't get paid for it. The irony is it was an employment law firm. :(
Does anyone here besides me think it's kinda funny that someone who works at a law firm didn't look at the full details behind the $24 an hour? It's only up to $24 an hour as a starting wage and even then it is in very limited areas where the cost of living is very high and the average wages are also higher than other areas of the country. Most of Target's employees will still be paid $15 an hour when hired unless it is in a high cost of living area like California and New York City or maybe up to $16 to try to stay competitive. Also, that $24 is the wage cap so that is as high as you can be paid an hour unless you are promoted to a management position.

Besides the pay being a lot less than I had anticipated, even for a newbie out of school, the stress levels were through the roof. I quit it altogether. I went to work in retail for $1.50 less and a lot less stress. I’m now working on launching my own business this year. Some diplomas aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

I take care of mentally challenged and mentally ill adults in a group home. We do all care, hygiene, doctors appointments, and meds. Basically nursing duties without the degree. I am currently only making 14.85 an hour. It’s pitiful to only get paid so little for taking care of human beings who can’t take care of themselves . Many are often violent. We are currently in contract negotiations and they want to take MORE from us! We as employees are looking at places like target. If we aren’t going to be valued at our current employer? Then we’ll move on. People need a LIVING WAGE. We need to look our for ourselves. We need to get paid what we are worth. We all have bills and as one commentator put it, your bills don’t care where you work.
There are some complications, but you might check out something like Care.com. Not sure what your wage laws and CoL would set you at but it's possible to get a fairly stable job earning $20+/hr if you have experience and spend some time "moonlighting" to get in-app recommendations before you try to go full time, and you get to spend time with just a few people getting to know them well instead of bouncing around and answering to a manager that cares more about business than people.

She got triple the salary at her next job and still it was bit lower than average market salary.... Being paid trash is making $11 taking care of disabled adults, which I did for six years. For more perspective, I was making $48,500 as an assistant Store manager at Walmart, which would be about $23/hr IF I worked 40 hours. I averaged more like 70 a week and so got closer to $13/hr (no overtime pay for salaried managers). For working myself to death, walking twelve miles a day around the store, working Christmas and Thanksgiving and birthdays and when injured, to be yelled at and argued with and assaulted by shoplifters. I was an assistant manager, employees don't show up and nobody wants to fire them. I work for a bank in the mortgage default department, customers are so mean I ended up trying to commit suicide 18 times. Put me on disability. So yeah wages are important, but very much job culture is. And she didn't address any fringe benefits she's getting and how much is your employer paying for your health care? How much is your employer offering things like daycare reimbursement and a health savings account with a loaded balance? I got these things at Bank of America. When my kids were born I was able to take paternity leave at 100% pay for 12 weeks. I don't know if that still exists. But the job was hell. I did well but like I said it took a toll Now I work as a janitor, no one bothers me or oversees my work. And I'm still getting accommodations from my manager and offered higher wages for my hard work. Just because your company makes a lot of money doesn't mean you are an effective employee.

Second, this woman wants to compare her job salary to another in a totally different profession. Companies compare like positions when setting salary ranges. This is how employment competition works. If she wants to work for Target then go work for them. And finally, she doesn't have to live in the 3rd most expensive city in the USA. She chooses to live there, so move if she can't afford it. Living in Seattle, I've had to balance a high cost of living and a high stress job with a tight budget. It's not always fun, but it is doable.
I was a Birth to 18mo. educator in a daycare. I also taught Pre-K. And just for the sake of argument, daycare educators are NOT babysitters! I was lucky to make about $21,000K a year. Talking to my husband one evening, I found out that the kids (high-schoolers) who did the cart returns, at his grocery store made more than I did!! WTH!!! Minimum wage should only be for entry level people just out of high school. If you're an adult making minimum wage, you need to find a new job. There are many jobs that pay slightly above to significantly more than minimum wage that don't require any kind of traditional higher education. Strive to get a better wage for yourself, not to increase the wage floor. Personally, I am underpaid at my job position, but I really like the group of people I work with and the job isn't too shabby, also I'm kinda lazy and have anxiety about looking for a new job.
In South Florida, palm Beach County is one on the wealthiest County's in the US. At what the op claims to make in a month and a hour means they only work 26 hours a week. How about work full time, which is 3,680 at the hourly wage listed. If they are claiming 2400 after taxes then ok but they also claim they cannot have a savings with 1700 in bills…there’s 700 there, I have less than that after bills and food with a family of 7 and while it might be cheaper where I live I’m still able to put 200 a month away….. I’m not commenting the wage is low compared to peers or anything simply that the story makes no sense and reads like lazy whining from someone in my generation
They get away with it because we have such a cultural bias against people who work in blue collar jobs. We think someone who sits behind a desk in an office as someone with a "real" job, whereas people working in retail have to suffer friends and relatives asking when they're going to get their life together. That said, there are disadvantages to a retail job, and that's why places like Target are having to raise wages to attract employees. You're on your feet all day. You get mistreated and disrespected by customers. It can be hard to make plans because you usually don't have a regular schedule. You're at the mercy of managers to give you enough hours so that you qualify for benefits. You have to work weekends and major holidays. And if you do eventually decide to move on and look for a job in a field related to your degree, it might not look as good on a resume. So there are trade-offs.
Calling the boss a "Boomer". Boomers are in their 60s+. GenZ and Millenials are the new Boomers. But that aside, go where the pay is better and the stress is less. Staying at a job because of prestige? No kidding. The single most WORTHLESS degree is "education" because they don't teach you anything and the second most worthless is an MBA. Most of the "dumbest" people I know are college students and, gawdhelpus, college graduates. Learn a "trade" and you will always, always be employed.
Yea as someone who worked at a law firm doing a paralegals job for almost 5yrs and making about $17/hr, not worth the stress. I'm back in school and graduating next semester, pre-med. Some of the girls were at $20-25 and they had been there over 10yrs. Christmas bonuses were nice though. Miss those haha. Hopefully I'll do a lot better though on my new endeavor!
It should be noted that not all people from the Boomer generation turned out to be narcissistic aholes that crap on everything like pigeons with IBS. I make $31 an hour in Michigan working at a Target distribution. And I get double pay 8 hours a week that brings me up to over 1,700 a week and roughly 6k a month after taxes. Four 12 hour days. Sometimes ever a 5th if im needed. So Im making aroumd 75k a year working for Target. Thats in an area where living is much easier than NY.

Companies are upping pay to keep employees and attract new ones because people are reevaluating where they work and how much crap they will put up with. I'd say the law firm boss is correct. College grads will line up to put them on their resume. It's the employer's job to know what they can get away with paying and it is the employee's job to decide what they will or will not tolerate or need to earn. I have taken jobs that paid CONSIDERABLY more only to find out the facility SUCKED as did the other workers and management. The grass is not always greener and no, making $1 or $50 more an hour may not make a different job tolerable - no matter what your education level. After years of a management job, I resigned last year and went home - and no manner of $raise would have enticed me to stay. NONE. ZERO. That statement is coming from an MBA. That's right. A huge part of any job is what you can move the with experience into. For Target if you plan on working their long-term you should be looking to move up to TL then Exec TL up to Store Lead or Store Manager. You'll hit 100k+ per year easy in those positions before even considering market or regional level positions. For an a admin assistant you hopefully would be looking to complete a law degree and move up to being an actual lawyer or something beyond just admin assistant.
I figured out 30 years ago, that my job as a Banquet Server at a prestigious resort, was worth keeping. The resort is a paradise, in So Cal, with beautiful weather. All the rooms open to the outside, so we are never "stuck inside". We're union, so get medical, dental and vision benefits for next to nothing. We eat gourmet food for free, get our uniforms dry cleaned, get 4 weeks paid, 2 weeks unpaid vacation/ year, have 401k or pension ( for new employees) and best of all, my job adjusts automatically for inflation because we make a percentage gratuity on everything sold, so when the menu prices go up, I make more money. My last paycheck was $67/hr gross pay andI have saved over half a million for retirement. I feel sorry for the people at the business functions we wait on; they have to sit in meetings, (while I get my exercise) and wear uncomfortable clothes, and sometimes be away from home for the week, and many don't get paid as well as I do.

So we'd hire someone, they'd work for 6 months, then take their trained self across the street to a branch office of a Big City company for $3 more per hour. The worst job I’ve ever had was Secretary at a law school. The administration was absurdly petty and about half the lawyer faculty members were on a never-ending power-trip, and the pay was awful. I couldn’t even stick it out a year. They had high turnover and I heard that the first 2 temps they hired for my position quit with weeks.
Even 10 or 20 years ago, a good administrator in New York City could be making 60 to $80,000 and if you're not your bosses are too damn cheap find another job
