Landlord Threatens To Evict Tenant If He Doesn’t Pay Next Month, So He Shuts Them Down With The Perfect Email
As the coronavirus outbreak keeps slamming the economy, 3.3 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week. The current level of unemployment hasn’t been seen since 2015, which means that a staggering 5.5 percent is now struggling to make ends meet.
As a result, many landlords are showing solidarity and giving their tenants a break amid the hard times. So when stand-up comedian Jesse Case checked his inbox, he couldn’t believe it. His landlady Kerri had decided to spice up the lease game and turn it into a month-to-month deal before Jesse would have to move out. But Jesse is no rookie. He rolled up his sleeves and went into full Karen mode. The result is a hilarious email reply that backfired big time. “Sometimes, even in times of global strife, managers must be spoken to,” tweeted Jesse. We can feel that roast!

The comedian Jesse was born in Nashville, Tennessee before landing in Los Angeles. According to his website, he toured for shows and TV appearances, before getting sick in 2013. “2 years later he was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer, and at 29, he had to move back in with his parents for treatment.”
Today, Jesse runs a podcast called Jesse vs Cancer that you can check out here. Among many topics, he covers anything from his love of Mariah Carey, bad gifts, to the “wee bit of cold going around” amid the current crisis. From what we’ve seen in the Karen-inspired email, the guy’s sense of humor is beyond doubt.

Disgusting!! Give us her email could be fun!! I'm a landlord in Miami I have 2 homes one is a duplex so I have 3 tenants. As of yesterday I told all of my tenants they can live rent free for 5 months!! And no I'm not rich but it's the right thing to do we are all human there needs to be compassion and love right now!!! My tenants are good people and they have been furloughed without pay. There was no way I could sleep at night knowing I would take whatever they had left to pay me!! I want good karma in my life!! Stay safe everyone stay strong we will get through this!! But we must be good to one another, this is the way!!

With no warning, a bunch of notices from management showed up in the lobby, saying (approximately) "You must pay your rent in full. If you can't then you should applied (sic) for Unemployment. If you fail to pay rent on time and in full, we will use the full power of the law to obtain payment." Whew! It was signed by the company's manager (so, not the big boss). Well, next day, the memos were all gone. And then a new memo appeared, saying (again paraphrasing) "We understand that this is a very difficult time and we will do all that we can to work with you. Our bills have to be paid too, so we would appreciate payment in full. If this isn't possible, we can also accept partial payment. If you can't make any payment, please contact this office so we can work something out." (this one was unsigned). So, a complete 180 in both tone and content! I think Big Boss never saw the first (illegal) memo and likely pitched a fit.
True colors are coming out in people during all this.

Any landlord who is behaving like this right now needs to lose their abilities to rent to anyone. These times are hard and people are being jerks when they know their tenants can't work.
The property management group I rent from sent out a message last week that rent would be due and if you are having financial difficulties Kroger is hiring. I sh×t you not.

Seriously, this is a challenging time for all of us, tenants, landlords, homowners, unemployed, working two jobs, man, woman, young old - and she comes up with a random threatenery towards a reliable tenant, without anything triggering it? It's sad I don't have any trouble believing this. A little altruism never was a mistake, and this applies twice as much in the current situation! On any side, from anyone, to anyone, just any, every, all.
There needs to be a pubic list of people like this landlord, and explanations of what’s going on. Community members need to know who among them is being inhuman at a time like this—and who’s at their mercy and needs help. Not everyone can post on social media or knows their rights and how to defend them.
Wait, how does this solve the problem? In order to avoid the landlord's assholery (especially now that services/courts are shutting down), OP will have to move out to dodge these landlord tactics for the next few months. Assistance to renters isn't available or even being offered at this time by most offices due to Covid-19. I'm having the same issue at my apartment, and threat of moving out is the only response that resonated with landlords (as they only care about their cashflow -- my building had several vacant properties prior to coronavirus and can't afford anyone else bailing on them). But that doesn't solve my issue -- my landlord is still trying s****y tricks in the meantime, and there's no recourse to hold them accountable while the world is on-hold. It's great that OP is standing their ground, but I'm not seeing a long-term plan for protecting their assets and rights. I don't see any LEGAL protection here whatsoever.

The owners & I were all agreed that the 1st/last/deposit would transfer to me. Fast forward 5 years and I need to move. I gave 20 days written notice, as per our agreement. This MF shows up at 10pm on a SUNDAY night with his behemoth of a son in tow, to "inform" me that he will be by in the morning - with the Sheriff - to evict me. I actually laughed in his face as I informed him of the eviction process in the state of Washington. I could have basically lived in that house without paying rent for probably 6 months before it went to court. And it HAD to go to court before an eviction notice was duly served by the Sheriff, they don't just show up at your house without documentation. Since I was already in the process of moving, I didn't pursue it. But seriously? You f*****g dumbass.
I was evicted by my super crazy landlady for not paying my "fair share" of $200 for a fumigation that my idiot housemate paid for after she found a (yes one!) huntsman spider in her room. So because my landlady was "super stressed" over it, she told me she was going to evict me and wasn't going to give any notice as my rental was also month to month..but then gave me 60 days as she was being generous (yeah right!) and if I made any kind of fuss she would instantly issue me with only a 14 day notice (highly illegal). All this happened a month before the restrictions happened here in Australia. So I am now sleeping on a friends floor on a camp stretcher while that b***h supposedly moves back in to her primary address (more b******t) and there's not a bloody thing I could do..apart from move out two months early without telling her as she didn't want to discuss anything with me..so I left a huge mess behind and didn't tell my housemate either..my way of saying "f*** you" to them both.
When they go to file that Unlawful Detainer they may not even be able to get in the building. There's a moratorium on evictions.................

He sent me an email once telling me he was raising my rent by $200 for the next month so I gave it to him hard. Told him the % he was legally allowed to raise it and that he had to give me advance warning legally written anfd he did follow the law after i pointed it out
If you are having a hard time with your landlord please make sure to document and keep everything on hand in case something is to happen. Worst comes to worst, make sure to leave a bad review on Google because they absolutely HATE that and it can help potential tenants avoid them in the future. I'm keeping my eyes open now as my plan has been to move in May or June, and if any of the places I wanted to move to turn out to pull this kind of sh!t, then I will absolutely NOT rent from them even if I do have adequate funds etc. Community is important to me and I will not stand for people being treated like cattle during a crisis.
In CA she cannot legally do any of that. Contact your rent board pronto. She is ooening herself up to fines and civil litigation. And really bad karma...

Your spelling of checks indicates that you’re not from the U.S. (or, if you are, that you insist on using a much cooler spelling of the word checks 👍) — in the US it’s not uncommon for cash or check to be the only forms of payment accepted. It’s antiquated, yes. Many people are not internet/electronic banking savvy. Many people don’t have access to the tech needed for electronic banking. And while not the reason for all, it’s also a way to avoid your otherwise taxable income being identified as such by the government. Many people never deposit cash or checks (just take the check to any bank and exchange it for cash), and therefore keep it undocumented.

Not only he is doing this for himself, but he's also very much helping all the others by informing them that the landlord is breaking the law and by fighting the landlord he's also increasing the chance that the landlord will think twice about doing something shady like this the next time.
