As Johnny Depp Completes His Testimony, Here Are 35 Reactions People Had To The Trial So Far
It is not unusual to see celebrities getting in several relationships, breaking up, getting married and getting divorced in short periods of time. For us it may seem like they're playing just another role and entertaining their fans but it’s their real life and they go through real emotions with long-lasting consequences.
We may often not see the pain they go through, but it’s not the case with Johnny Depp’s and Amber Heard’s relationship as the defamation lawsuit the actor filed against his ex-wife went to trial and is broadcasted in its whole entirety for people to watch and have a glimpse of what happened between the two and what they feel about one another.
The trial is far from over but one of the two most important witnesses in this case, Johnny Depp, just completed his testimony so we will take a look at what are people’s thoughts on what happened in the courtroom so far.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard started dating around 2012 and people realized that the couple were in a serious relationship when they spotted the woman wearing a ring that was assumed to be an engagement ring in 2014. The actor confirmed the rumors and the couple married in a private ceremony in 2015.
However, the marriage didn’t last that long as on May 23, 2016, Amber Heard filed for a divorce. Not only did she want to separate from her husband, she obtained a temporary restraining order against him because she claimed that he physically abused her during their relationship due to the man suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. The divorce case ended in 2017 with Amber Heard receiving a $7 million settlement.
My mother and sister are my abusers. My mother started her abuse (physical, mental, verbal, and emotional) when I was maybe 5. My mother abused my father as well - including physically. I find comments like this annoying. Terms like "toxic masculinity" mean something, and have a big impact on our culture... and then people don't put the effort into understanding the meaning and ruin the ability to actually address the issues. "Toxic masculinity" does NOT mean "a bad man". It is about "masculinity" not about "men". "Toxic femininity" would also NOT mean "a mean woman", it would be about femininity. I don't know why people can't comprehend the difference between gender and sex. It isn't that complicated. -- Toxic Masculinity is a specific TYPE of bad behavior, not all bad behavior committed by a man.
Yes. And "toxic masculinity" includes traditionally masculine traits that hurt the man himself - such as our tendency to delay doctors' appointments because we don't like showing weakness. Logically, toxic femininity would include traditionally "feminine" behaviour like being a nurturer to the extent that you put others' health before their own. It really would help if people would look these terms up instead of guessing.

Sigh. Women can certainly be abusive or toxic, but that isn't "toxic femininity." Nor is an abusive or toxic man automatically an example of "toxic masculinity." Toxic masculinity refers to *harmful cultural ideas about what men are supposed to be.* There are certainly harmful cultural ideas about what women are supposed to be, too, but this isn't an example of them.
I don’t know. The belief is rooted in the idea that women are supposed to be nurturing, docile, more attentive…. Weaker. It’s why we’re so quick to believe it when a woman speaks out in her abuse, but always look for that caveat when it’s the reverse. The same behaviors we accept from women in these situations (fantasies of homicide, reactive abuse (most notably language based)) we point to and say “he’s just as bad” I don’t know that I disagree that this would be a good example of toxic femininity

Another thing I'd like to add to this conversation is that I recognize some bad behaviors in myself. I left my last partner after ten years together and we were abusive to each other. I told him that too. I gave (almost) as good as I got at times. It's important to realize bad behaviors in yourself and learn from it. I DO see that some of the things I do are toxic behaviors and I strive to never do them again. I left almost five years ago and haven't been in a real relationship since. I have no interest in being with anyone but if I ever do, I certainly will strive to be a better person. I think certain people bring out the worst in each other.

I was raised by a very cruel and violent mother and my older sister was also abusive and quite narcissistic. And... I was never able to be with the love of my life because he has been in a toxic relationship with an alcoholic abusive woman since he was 19 (she was 31 at the time they met) so I am so well-placed to know about women's potential for violence in all its forms that I wrote an essay about it in University on the topic of a societal myth (I chose violence is a masculine thing as the "myth"). I am so glad the truth is finally coming out.
A man can lose his job, his friends, his freedom and his money all from one word from a woman, without one piece of evidence being presented. False allegations still mostly go unpunished. Still want to hide behind "male privilege" defense? How many more until this gets attention too?

In Australia one woman a week is murdered by a husband or ex-husband and often the man murders all of his children too. Yes of course we should hear when women are toxic, but let's keep it all in perspective.

@Aliquid, I understand what you mean but I don't think you can tell me what I was taught as a child. Sure I knew feminine men and masculine women and I was told there was something wrong with them or it was just a phase. Anybody whose sex and gender did not match was odd, weird or defective. And to be clear I know that is wrong now

The judges have realised what has happened and even mandated therapy to try and get the children to see that they've been brainwashed by the mother but they don't want to engage as the brainwashing was too effective. So true, women have so much power over the men they love. It is so important not to abuse that. This trial is proof of how destructive toxic femininity can be.
I cannot disagree. I am a feminist, one who believes in equality for all genders, not that one gender deserves more than another. And I absolutely believe in toxic femininity, as I do toxic masculinity. All genders can take it way too far.
If there is one good thing that is coming out of this (very public) trial it is that men can speak out about being abused both mentally and physically and it's OK. We are seeing that people overwhelmingly seem to be on JD's "side". From what I've seen online and speaking to people, he is supported and believed 100% by men and women and it doesn't matter that he used drugs or alcohol. That doesn't mean you deserve to be battered. People are also starting to understand that you aren't supposed to say, "Why didn't you leave?" There's no easy answer to that question. We all live in shades of grey.
My Wife of 11 years was my mental, verbal, and emotional abuser. Do you know how tough it is to firstly get out of a situation like this, being a man and a 18 stone power lifter. People take one look at you and think your lying "Na, you must over thinking it" (back to gas lighting for me).

Load More Replies... my dad was physically abusive... but my mum and her sisters (and my sisters) were mentally, verbally, emotionally abusive.... and that was a trend that was echoed through school etc. They fed each other.... it always baffled me why society appeared to see this as so one sided... both are bad - but calling men out for it and letting women continue on is counter-productive.
So much pain for both of them. Brought me to tears, they chose to process their pain through abuse in the moment of reaction instead of reaching out for help and leaning on each other for support. One can only learn and grow from their pain and trauma.

Things escalated when The Sun published an article with the headline "GONE POTTY How Can J K Rowling be 'genuinely happy' casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?" and Johnny Depp decided to defend his reputation in court.
In November 2020, the actor lost the case and after trying to appeal, he again got a negative answer. He had to step down from the role as the villain Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series and he lost his iconic role of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates franchise as well as several others.
But the current lawsuit has roots in 2018 when Amber Heard herself wrote an op-ed piece which was published by The Washington Post in which she revealed that she suffered from abuse.
The actress didn’t mention Depp’s name but his lawyers and her ex-husband believed that it was a clear reference to their relationship, so they filed a lawsuit against her for defamation in 2019 with the hope of restoring Johnny Depp's reputation.

The lawsuit started on April 11 and it is predicted to last for 6 weeks. On April 25, one of the two protagonists of the case, Johnny Depp, finished his testimony after being questioned by attorneys.
In these 4 days, many audio clips, messages and stories were shared, bringing to the surface all the dirt and pain the man went through. They talked about his drug and alcohol addictions, about his questionable behavior and he talked about experiencing abuse himself that came from his mother and many other quite shocking events. He also claimed that he was the one being abused while he was married to Amber Heard.
Many stories surfaced as other witnesses were called to testify, like Depp’s older sister, Christi Dembrowski, Depp’s doctor, Dr. David Kipper, his security guard Sean Bett, etc. There are actually around 120 people on the witness list for both sides. It includes some big names like Elon Musk, Ellen Barkin, Paul Bettany and James Franco.

Many people are now villainizing Amber Heard and are very amused by her attorneys, who oftentimes ask irrelevant questions and make remarks that a professional shouldn't make while questioning Johnny Depp and witnesses who are on his side.
It is not clear what the reactions will be after Amber Heard testifies and the attorneys question witnesses that believe she is the victim. I absolutely hate that this happened to Johnny Depp but I am so happy that this topic is in the spotlight. Domestic violence and cruelty towards men can be just as vicious as it is towards women. The main difference is we have conditioned men to keep quiet and tolerate it. If they speak up about it they are made fun of or dismissed. It really needs to stop, too. Abuse is not gender specific.
If i hear one more feminist (and I am one) say that it's obvious Heard just got this way because of men? 1. I'll admit there may be merit to that, since my late sister was mean/punch-happy and yes, she wasn't treated ideally but 2. We as women make choices. Feminism means we own the mistakes.
I would like to offer this rebuttal to the "feminists". My son was involved with a teenage girl from age 15-17 (they were both the same age). This girl abused my son so bad. There were many instances but I will share a couple. She would haul off and punch him in the junk for no reason and laugh about it. Another thing is she would be really controlling and get jealous if my son gave attention to anyone but her (including me). One time my son decided to hop on and play COD with his stepbrother. She logged into his PlayStation account booted him out and changed the password because he chose to spend time with his brother. There was SO much more though. I tried so hard to stop it and tried so hard to show him that he was being abused but boys are taught to overlook abuse. It was the happiest day of my life when that ball of toxicity went away.... my point is sometimes it has nothing to do with other men turning a girl/woman that way. I have experience living with a drug addict/alcoholic and dealing with that is hard, so I hate these posts talking about Depp as if he's some angel. I applaud him for coming forward with the obvious abuse he suffered but I wish he wasn't the face of it. If you’ve ever lived with someone who does hardcore drugs regularly then you know there’s almost always some kind of abuse there, even just emotional. But she is someone with serious anger issues who is now trying to play victim while she participated in all of it. Her comment in the audio about how he's a man and no one will believe him angered me so much I wanted to scream. Her article talking about how she was a ‘survivor’ is ridiculous. It wasn’t some new thing; she had no problem with it when they dated, when she was being photographed with him, etc. She had means to get out but didn't. She was an active contributor in mutual abuse. BUT…he’s not innocent here; I feel like we're holding him on some pedestal when we shouldn't.

And if someone says "they're both awful", people pile on as if one said "they're both awful by the same degree" or as if one was equating his awfulness with hers. Which again, is simplistic, reductive, and not true to how life works. Look, I'm not saying Johnny is guilty -- but I'm not saying he's innocent, either. Everyone seems to be taking a very strong side here, yet the fact is (despite videotapes and other recordings), we don't *really* know what happened. Truth be told, the jury really won't know, either -- but they are there to render a decision about that. The public is not. All I'm saying is that one can end up very disappointed and let down if they put all their eggs in one basket based on how much they like a person or don't trust another person. Remember, Bill Cosby was once America's favorite dad, and people used to praise Louis CK up and down and around the block.

I won't pick sides because I don't know enough about their story. But I think it's really important to speak about domestic violence. It's been in the dark too long. And we, as a society sort of normalize it too because "it's family. They are "willingly" staying so they ask for it" and so on. I feel like it's very dangerous to label all women who seek help for this is mentally ill or lying though. It's often hard to be believed as it is and it's so much shame in actually speaking up. In my case it was my children who spoke about it first and then I couldn't pretend anymore and it got out in the open. And you need to speak about it to create a change. People need to know and start questioning the behavior because both in the relationship create a new twisted "normal". But sure, it happens regardless of gender, I don't oppose that. Just don't label all women as crazy when they speak up. Statistics show that women are more often victims of violence. It's a patriarchal aspect of it too.

There's 3 sides to a story. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. It's hard to remain impartial until everything has been laid out. Humans are naturally biased. I bet he's no saint but neither do I think he's abusive. The fact none of his ex's say he was violent speaks volumes.
That's exactly why I'm leaning toward supporting him! Anytime someone in Hollywood was accused of abuse more than one person came forward about it. For someone like Johnny who has been in the spotlight for as long as he has, if he had been a serial abuser I'm sure someone else would have spoken up about it by now.

First time I saw her was on Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson. The way she was carrying on was making him awkward, he was not comfortable with her at all. She just enjoyed it. Never liked her then, despise her even more now.
Dodged a bullet years ago. Was dating an attractive and popular woman. It had only been a few weeks and I was over at her place for lunch. She wanted me to take a week off work and drive her to visit friends several hours away. I said that although I wasn't opposed to the trip, there was no way I could get that much time off on such short notice. Next thing is a "F**K!" and a glass smashes against the wall by my head. Got up and walked out. Often wonder what would have happened if I had tried 'to make it work'.
This is a man. A human. He was wronged and cornered. A human. Yeah he did stupid stuff and relapsed and cleaned up an dealt with a toxic home life. Most of us do. But he was by far abused and tried to make it work.

What she's done to Johnny is absolutely inexcusable. We need to be more morally consistent and support all victims of abuse and domestic violence. Multiple people have came out to accuse this woman of being a sadistic abuser yet she's able to star in Aquaman. Her own admission of guilt that nobody would believe Johnny because he's a man is enough to indict her for her manipulative abusive actions. She needs to be held accountable and everyone who misjudged Johnny Depp should learn basic decency and apologize to him for not believing him simply because of his gender.

I never understood how it got this far. When the allegations first came out years ago, I thought, that's utter BS. Drinking? Sure. Drugs? Maybe. Wife beating? Um, no. His split from Winona Ryder was no picnic - and there were never accusations of violence. His split from Vanessa Paradis couldn't have been easy, either - they had been together for 14 years and have children together. Never any intimation of domestic violence. All of a sudden, Amber Heard comes along and Depp's somehow a completely different person, prone to physical violence? Nah - not buying it.

Didn't he abuse kate moss when he was in blackout drunk drug mode? Pushed her down stairs. I believe both of them. He's just as abusive w women. He said horrible things about Vanessa when he was drunk too. His addictions were what made him lose film roles bc he had to wear an earpiece and be fed his lines. I sadly do not think he'll live much longer. His drug use is so over the top. The rolling stone journalist that spent a few days at his home said it was beyond drug use. His ex business partners too. He doesn't know what he does when he's drugged up and is a different person. Angelina Jolie said she had a very difficult time w an actor on set that had to be fed lines bc he could not stay sober long enough to film his scenes. This was said not long after the tourist. He's not going to win this case bc he did some of these things she wrote her opinion about but at least he got to speak of all of his abuse by other women.
You must not be watching the trial at all because this has all been addressed in court. It's not really the case. I work with celebrities quite a bit (never JD though I do know people who know him and it's all been extremely positive) and the stuff you hear in the news is so messed up. along with so many others, so happy that domestic abuse against men is coming to light. i have always said that my sex often makes me ashamed to be related to them in that manner because some women can be so manipulative and toxic and the most they are called are gold diggers, vain, vapid, etc., but an abuser. as a survivor of abuse i can tell you that it is hard to admit because people silently judge you, even thinking that you must have 'liked' it if you stayed so long. it is time to stop judging and believing both men and women and have empathy for them

I absolutely hate that this happened to Johnny Depp but I am so happy that this topic is in the spotlight. Domestic violence and cruelty towards men can be just as vicious as it is towards women. The main difference is we have conditioned men to keep quiet and tolerate it. If they speak up about it they are made fun of or dismissed. It really needs to stop, too. Abuse is not gender specific.
If i hear one more feminist (and I am one) say that it's obvious Heard just got this way because of men? 1. I'll admit there may be merit to that, since my late sister was mean/punch-happy and yes, she wasn't treated ideally but 2. We as women make choices. Feminism means we own the mistakes.
I would like to offer this rebuttal to the "feminists". My son was involved with a teenage girl from age 15-17 (they were both the same age). This girl abused my son so bad. There were many instances but I will share a couple. She would haul off and punch him in the junk for no reason and laugh about it. Another thing is she would be really controlling and get jealous if my son gave attention to anyone but her (including me). One time my son decided to hop on and play COD with his stepbrother. She logged into his PlayStation account booted him out and changed the password because he chose to spend time with his brother. There was SO much more though. I tried so hard to stop it and tried so hard to show him that he was being abused but boys are taught to overlook abuse. It was the happiest day of my life when that ball of toxicity went away.... my point is sometimes it has nothing to do with other men turning a girl/woman that way. I applaud him for coming forward with the obvious abuse he suffered but I wish he wasn't the face of it. If you’ve ever lived with someone who does hardcore drugs regularly then you know there’s almost always some kind of abuse there, even just emotional. But she is someone with serious anger issues who is now trying to play victim while she participated in all of it. Her comment in the audio about how he's a man and no one will believe him angered me so much I wanted to scream. Her article talking about how she was a ‘survivor’ is ridiculous. It wasn’t some new thing; she had no problem with it when they dated, when she was being photographed with him, etc. She had means to get out but didn't. She was an active contributor in mutual abuse. BUT…he’s not innocent here; I feel like we're holding him on some pedestal when we shouldn't.
Yes agreed. Much of the commentary presented here is very reductive - if Amber Heard is the evil villain, then Johnny Depp is the innocent victim/hero when real life is obviously never that simple. And if someone says "they're both awful", people pile on as if one said "they're both awful by the same degree" or as if one was equating his awfulness with hers. Which again, is simplistic, reductive, and not true to how life works. If they were given a rating of *how* awful they were, maybe that would be better - she'd get a higher score than him, it seems, but he'd still score a few points. But people would still find issue with that.

Truth be told, the jury really won't know, either -- but they are there to render a decision about that. The public is not. Load More Replies... I won't pick sides because I don't know enough about their story. But I think it's really important to speak about domestic violence. It's been in the dark too long. And we, as a society sort of normalize it too because "it's family. They are "willingly" staying so they ask for it" and so on. I feel like it's very dangerous to label all women who seek help for this is mentally ill or lying though. It's often hard to be believed as it is and it's so much shame in actually speaking up. In my case it was my children who spoke about it first and then I couldn't pretend anymore and it got out in the open. And you need to speak about it to create a change. People need to know and start questioning the behavior because both in the relationship create a new twisted "normal". But sure, it happens regardless of gender, I don't oppose that. Just don't label all women as crazy when they speak up. Statistics show that women are more often victims of violence. It's a patriarchal aspect of it too.

Although I have not been following the case, at the very least it must have been such a relief for Johnny Depp to tell his story and get it out there.

That's exactly why I'm leaning toward supporting him! Anytime someone in Hollywood was accused of abuse more than one person came forward about it. Multiple people have came out to accuse this woman of being a sadistic abuser yet she's able to star in Aquaman. Her own admission of guilt that nobody would believe Johnny because he's a man is enough to indict her for her manipulative abusive actions. She needs to be held accountable and everyone who misjudged Johnny Depp should learn basic decency and apologize to him for not believing him simply because of his gender.

I never understood how it got this far. When the allegations first came out years ago, I thought, that's utter BS. Drinking? Sure. Drugs? Maybe. Wife beating? Um, no. His split from Winona Ryder was no picnic - and there were never accusations of violence. His split from Vanessa Paradis couldn't have been easy, either - they had been together for 14 years and have children together. Never any intimation of domestic violence. All of a sudden, Amber Heard comes along and Depp's somehow a completely different person, prone to physical violence? Nah - not buying it.

He said horrible things about Vanessa when he was drunk too. His addictions were what made him lose film roles bc he had to wear an earpiece and be fed his lines. I sadly do not think he'll live much longer. His drug use is so over the top. The rolling stone journalist that spent a few days at his home said it was beyond drug use. His ex business partners too. He doesn't know what he does when he's drugged up and is a different person. Angelina Jolie said she had a very difficult time w an actor on set that had to be fed lines bc he could not stay sober long enough to film his scenes. This was said not long after the tourist. He's not going to win this case bc he did some of these things she wrote her opinion about but at least he got to speak of all of his abuse by other women.
You must not be watching the trial at all because this has all been addressed in court. It's not really the case. I work with celebrities quite a bit (never JD though I do know people who know him and it's all been extremely positive) and the stuff you hear in the news is so messed up. along with so many others, so happy that domestic abuse against men is coming to light. i have always said that my sex often makes me ashamed to be related to them in that manner because some women can be so manipulative and toxic and the most they are called are gold diggers, vain, vapid, etc., but an abuser. as a survivor of abuse i can tell you that it is hard to admit because people silently judge you, even thinking that you must have 'liked' it if you stayed so long. it is time to stop judging and believing both men and women and have empathy for them
