Nothing makes a job miserable faster than a higher-up who likes to overwork their staff.
Of course, there’ll be times where you’ll be asked to do some extra duties and you’ll have no other choice than to take one for the team – however, there’s a limit for everything, and when you catch yourself being taken advantage of, perhaps it’s time to reconsider your employment.
The majority of us already have too much on our plates outside of work, but not every employee is willing to confront their management in case they come across as lazy or uncommitted.
Moreover, sometimes a person is simply not able to switch jobs and all they can do is endure the culture until a better opportunity arises.
The moral of the story is that job burnout sucks, especially if you’ve ever been in the same boat as this Reddit user whose boss “surprised” her with a lengthy duty list that had to be completed in the space of an hour.

“My job tells me if I don’t do all this in an hour I’m fired” – this online user turned to Reddit’s r/antiwork community to vent about her job ordering her to complete three pages worth of duties in just an hour, while also threatening her with dismissal if she failed to do so. In just over a day the post has managed to receive 23.2K upvotes and 3.1K comments discussing the situation.

The housekeeping list included thorough tasks that were supposed to be done in 6 spaces: the entrance, kitchen, living room/dining room, bathroom, bedrooms, and balcony. The tasks also included a couple of things like a “daily special assignment” and random paperwork.
Now, at the top of the list you can see “housekeeping supervisor’s checklist,” which is why a few Redditors suggested that the author of the post might be faking the whole tale – however, the woman did reply to one of the comments and assured the members that she’s indeed a cleaner.

Some users tried to lighten up the mood in the comment section and laughed that there were only about 85 tasks on the list; others mentioned that at least the author was granted some freedom to “express herself” through the work, as for instance, in the very first task it appears that she had the opportunity to choose between sweeping, mopping or vacuuming.
However, u/pandalynn78 was able to understand the OP’s feelings. The user has some experience with housekeeping and laundry-related duties in an assisted living facility and said that they were expected to clean 8 apartments, wash/dry all personal belongings, and clean all of the common areas in a three-story facility.

People also argued that mopping and cleaning floors alone usually takes half an hour minimum, plus the time may vary depending on how big the room is. Taking the trash out is another 30 minutes, so how can someone expect their employee to complete such a massive list in just an hour?
Somebody recommended that the OP do what she can without burning herself out and said that even if management kept their promise and fired her, she could file for unemployment and see a lawyer.
Others advised the author to ask the manager to show her how to do all these tasks in such a short period of time
Folks in the comments have plenty of ideas; this Redditor suggested she put the manager on the spot and ask them to show her how all these tasks could be done in the space of 60 minutes.
The author of the post also revealed that she only gets 12 bucks an hour, meaning that she’d get that exact amount for completing the 3-page assignment.

Plenty of people, at least once in their lifetime, have been involved in toxic work cultures; whether it was a cleaning nightmare similar to the one that this user is enduring, or perhaps co-existing with backstabbing colleagues that made your life a living hell – whatever it was, not every person is able to stand their ground without having to fear for their job.

This was like my stint at Tim Hortons. I was given an impossible task sheet for a 5 hour shift: Clean washrooms every hour, clean the drive thru area, parking lot and front entrances (like, sweep and scrub out stains) every 30 min, clean tables frequently, clean the windows and display case twice, sweep and mop the floors in the kitchen, behind the counter and dining area every hour, restock everything, and I was expected to jump on cash register duties whenever the others effed off to the back, which was every rush hour. I was getting paid just $9.04 /hr (the 4 cents was my raise. Yahoo.. not). I was a hard worker, always kept busy anyways, but my efforts were never good enough or fast enough and the manager kept threatening to replace me with foreigner worker, in which she did in the end.
It took longer than an hour to make that insane list of demands. Sheesh!

I worked as a hotel cleaner for $7.25 an hour about 8 years ago. I had to do around 8 of these rooms a day plus basic straightening of stay overs. Making the bed and putting in pillowcases takes the longest. Usually I could do all these tasks in about 30 min per room. They usually get cleaned well every day or several times a week so some of those tasks like checking for scuffs and entry light literally takes seconds. You known what to look for and what is out of place as soon as you walk in. Some rooms took longer if there were spills or a party but in an 8 hour day I could do 8 or sometimes up to 12 rooms plus stay overs. It can be done but you work your butt off.

Doesn’t this person realize that slavery ended over a hundred years ago? There is no way possible that anyone could get all that done in one hour let alone one day! Specially for what he is paying.
That looks insane, especially considering the units apparently have a kitchen and multiple bedrooms. It’s essentially management trying to argue that they uphold quality by making a thorough list, but not allowing the cleaners enough time to execute it. They will have to skip tasks. Then if there’s a complaint, the management blames them because they had a list of tasks. A responsible manager would actually observe a good professional cleaner doing all the tasks and use that time as a goal. Of course, this isn’t about actually getting all the work done. It’s about wringing every penny out of a worker and having the ability to fire them for cause at any time. That’s before we get to the starvation wages.
