“I Would Sue Will Smith For 200 Million Dollars”: Jim Carrey Is Sickened By Hollywood’s Reaction To The Oscars Fiasco

The internet has been overflowing with reactions and conversations about an incident that occurred at the 94th Academy Awards. The show took a bizarre turn when Will Smith went onstage and slapped Chris Rock for a joke the comedian made about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

On Monday, during an interview with Gayle King for CBS Mornings, Jim Carrey had something to say about these actions, and he did not hold back. The actor slammed the Oscars audience for giving Smith a standing ovation when it was announced he won best actor for his performance in King Richard. Smith taking home the trophy occurred just several minutes after the troubling incident.

“I was sickened,” Carrey said. “I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.” He was deeply saddened by the crowd’s reaction to Smith’s win and noted his actions overshadowed the entire evening. Scroll down below to see the whole interview.

Rock was presenting the award for the Best Original Documentary when he pointed to Pinkett Smith in the audience and said the now-infamous joke: “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see you.”

In case you’re wondering, G.I. Jane is a 1997 movie starring Demi Moore with a shaved head. Rock’s joke was purely a reference to Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle. His words made her roll her eyes and prompted a harsh reaction from her husband. You see, in 2018, the actress opened up about her diagnosis of alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. She has been candid about her struggles ever since.

Just minutes after the incident, attendees got to their feet when Will Smith won the award. “Richard Williams [whom he portrayed in King Richard] was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said in his acceptance speech.

“I’ve been called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse, and you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and you gotta pretend like that’s OK.”

“I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees,” Smith said with tears in his eyes. “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said. … But love will make you do crazy things.”

While Smith did not mention Rock’s name in his speech, he later apologized to the comedian in a lengthy Instagram post. “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive”, Smith stated. “I am embarrassed, and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Pinkett Smith also took to social media to share a post, but instead of sharing her thoughts about the situation, she shared a quote: “This is the season for healing and I’m here for it”.

BBC reported that the comedian joked backstage after the incident: “That’s the only time you get hit by Muhammad Ali and it doesn’t leave a scratch,” referring to Smith’s role in Ali. Plus, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Variety that Chris Rock has “declined to file a police report”.

“LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report,” a full statement from LAPD reads.

The Academy also issued a statement: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

An industry source told People, “Behind the scenes, there were a lot of people and different voices and bifurcated opinions weighing in on what had just happened and what was the best and quickest course of action. People were also checking that Chris Rock was okay.”

“Having Will removed was definitely discussed seriously,” the source added. “You can’t plan for something like this and make a split-second decision that needs everyone’s buy-in, and in any iteration that would have consequences.”

I agree, and the opinion pieces in the news that excuse Smith because he's black or say that "white people don't get to comment on it" can go to hell. It's a person, hitting a person, and that's never OK. It's not about race, and stop making everything about race.

Whatever our colour/race etc, we're still all human beings. Those who say "White people don't get to comment" are racists, plain and simple.

This is the intelligent, thoughtful Jim Carrey I admire. What an excellent interview. I'm heartened by the support shown him. I am so disappointed in Will Smith. I think the Academy and audience were just stunned and didn't know how to proceed. Sadly, Smith seemed to be still inhabiting his role as King Richard who was known for brawling and also abusing his wife.

As a person suffering from alopecia , bald patches, no eyebrows no eyelashes, I've had strangers on the street say crap to my face when I was 16 years old, Chris Rock and people on social media are a single drop in pond that I dont give a s!!t about, that he knew or didn't know if she had alopecia doesn't change the fact that he made a joke/comment about a persons physical appearance, Mrs Smith looked uncomfortable. Will Smith defended his wife yes, but did he have to do it in that manner, he could have done it with words or in a private manner, not in front of the cameras, or comfort his wife, now people are going to think that they can hit comedians whenever they don't like a joke, since freaking Will Smith did it

I liked a comment from a stand-up comedian: "Smiths behavior set a precedent that if you get offended by a joke, you can walk on the stage and assault the person." I totally agree with that.

Rock should take a note from Carlin though about not using comedy to punch down. Making fun of a person for a chronic medical condition they have been open about is reprehensible.

You guys do know Rock actually released a documentary on Black hair and the way American society treats Black women negatively because of their hair right? In 2009. Its called "Good Hair" and even features people with Alopecia. He should have known better than to make the joke. Now he should not have been slapped but this is hardly the scandal people make it out to be. The Academy's long term support for people like Woody Allen, Roman Polanskii and Harvey Wienstein should be far more scandalous.

That Rock could expect to get laughs/approval for such poor taste in joking (actually bullying) is a clear indicator that the Academy hasn't changed much

Jim is sickened that Will gets a standing ovation but not the fact that too many of his peers have actively supported a known pedophile rapist named Roman Polanski? Who fled to France so he wouldn't be in jail? Or how about when John Wayne tried to assault a native american who asked for better treatment in 1973 and Clint Eastwood mocked her. Oh, talk about the irony! They never want to ask them the really HARD questions. Hollywood truly does pick and choose what's right and what's wrong as long as it makes them money. It's hollywood where morals don't matter and money does! I'm positive Carrey would never go there since that would mean career suicide for him. If anyone is spineless, it's truly him. I didn't have much respect for anyone in hollywood but now I'm glad I don't. Reasons why george carlin has always remained my favorite comedian. He was an insightful man that knew what it meant to truly be funny and wasn't afraid to speak his mind.

To be honest, I think they’re both in the wrong. Chris Rock did deserve the slap, physical or not. Perhaps not in front of television. It’s heartless to make a joke out of someone’s medical condition for a chuckle. Will Smith perhaps should have slapped him with words—stating how cruel Rock’s joke was. To him he was defending his spouse. Maybe he should have taken the mic from Rock and explained it was nasty? What is done is unfortunately done.

Yeah, no. Chris Rock talks s**t about everyone and got smacked for it. Do I need to remind you all that John Wayne was held back by SIX people so he wouldn't physically assault a Native American woman during the Oscar's? Or how about the numerous convicted rapists and pedophiles who still hold Oscar's? Everyone is acting like Will Smith knocked his teeth out. He got b***h slapped. Additionally, this was not a little joke at a private party, Chris Rock publicly humiliated her in front of millions of people, he should feel lucky that he only got slapped.

This is probably get me some downvotes but please, help me understand this. I don't get it. Will Smith slapped Chris Rock because he made a joke about his wife medical condition? And now Will is the bad guy, for reacting emotional/violently? But no one is talking about Chris making a sick joke about someone's medical condition? If it was cancer...would people still let Chris walk away with this joke or was the whole world all over him and agreeing with Will? And the narrative would be like: if it was my wife I would have done this and that. But because it is not cancer but alopecia...the joke is oke? Please enlighten me, I sincerely don't get the fuss. To me, it feels like the class-bully is harrassing this kid, until this kid gets mad and start a fight to defend himself but he gets expelled and the bully walks away. But then again, I don't know the full story and the full history on Will and Chris, what triggered his reaction.

I thought and still do think it was a publicity stunt to get more viewership (I mean who watches the Oscar's besides snooty moviegoers?), but if it was indeed real and Will was that offended by the joke there's a gazillion other ways he could have handled it. Violence was not okay in this situation. My grandkids will be talking about this. It was a pivotal moment for media history.

If the 'slap' had never happened, what sanction would have been applied to Chris Rock for his verbal assault on Smith's partner, for abusing her, for embarrassing her, for bullying her in relation to her medical condition? Nothing at all! So until such time as such extremely bad behaviour can be effectively dealt with, then may be the physical approach is the only way. Allowing a bully to get away with it is also a very bad look on TV.

If the slap hadn't happened, "cancel culture" would have come after Chris Rock the following day. I don't know how successful it would be, but it WOULD have happened. Will's violent outburst saved Chris from that... because our fickle "mob mentality" has this obsession with needing to see a "bad guy vs a victim", and can't comprehend "both people were wrong"

But he apologized, and we hardly can ask him to do more. it's up to the academy then to analyse the thing, and see if they should ask him to give the oscar back. I am very confused as to why people are so against " violence" when its a slap between two men but it's fine if its the sentencing after a crime, someone hurt an animal or a child... war... Always need to support the troops! I'd rather have grown men settle a dispute with a slap than waste money, time and human lives over BS! Violence never seems to be the answer until its the answer. All I have to say, is that Smith better be glad he's rich. If a poor black man had done that, he would have been shot dead. Rock should have pressed charges. Do we really believe in freedom of speech, or not? What he said was in really bad taste, but you hear things ten times worse on so called news networks every day. In calling out the industry. You're all a bunch of hypocrites. The best actor award should have been taken from Smith.

They were both wrong; don't insult people because of autoimmune diseases, they can't control that and it's like persecuting them for something as ridiculous as the amount of melanin in their skin. However, don't slap people at a prestigious award ceremony, that just ruins it for other people and just adds an awkward mood to the entire event.

I would have supported Will if he had just yelled at Chris and kept in his seat, rather than having a violent outburst. Chris was out of line, but a pathetic verbal assault never justifies violence. If Will kept to his seat like a mature adult, he could have fanned the fires of cancel culture the following day and ruined Chris's career... but no, now the general public sees Chris as a victim and a hero for how well he rolled with the situation. Will made the situation worse.

Given the fact that society is canceling so many people over dumb comments they've made, that we can't just ignore other people's words that we don't like, plus pronouns, micro aggressions, name calling and such- our society is ripe for this behavior. We've cultivated it.

I do not care if these people are famous, I do not care about the colour of their skin and I do not care if they already had some beef going on before that we do not know about - you do not walk up to people and smack them in the face. That's it. Really simple if you ask me. Maybe the joke was in poor taste, alright, but Will could have easily come up with a witty comment in his speech later or the next day on twitter if he hadn't won. This was the reaction of somebody confusing real life with a video game or movie. I never thought I would ever agree with Jim Carey on anything (I cannot watch most of his films because I cannot stand him pulling faces and acting weird) but this time I am absolutely on the same side.

I am honestly tired of hearing about this. But even if cancel culture gets Will Smith it will not stick forever. I am not defending his actions at all, because violence is never the answer. But I also think that comedians feel like they have the green light to tell jokes about anyone no matter the situation, and its not always funny to go after someone personally just to get a laugh. At this point this has benefited Chris to the fullest. Shows that he could not sell out are suddenly sold out and cheapest ticket is 700.00 is this a stunt, possibly. Violence is never the answer and Will should of taken the opportunity to say that not all jokes are funny and how they hurt people. Plus I dont understand why Jada didnt stop him from gong on that stage.

Will Smith contradicted himself on so many levels - from his "acceptance speech" preaching that you have to take the good with the bad in "the work they do" and he even laughs at Chis Rock BEORE and AFTER Rock made the comment about his wife, then its almost a switcharoo and only then does Smith go on stage and b*tch slaps Rock. It all seemed like he did it as an afterthought because Smiths wife obviously got p1ssy with him for laughing at the "joke" and he had to redeem himself to his wife. If Pinkett Smith was truly so badly insulted by the "insult comedy" from Chris Rock why did she just sit there with a crass smile and roll her eyes, that is looking like she's REALLY BADLY insulted - NOT! Will Smith = under the thumb and an ego the size of Jupiter with a whole family that has an obvious victim mentality.

A tasteless joke doesn't equal a punch in the face and swearing on national television, I'm sorry Will. I salute Chris Rock for keeping it cool and his composure and recovery during this scene, it was very classy to take the high road and brush it off like this. As for Will, I blame the covid pandemic and his obnoxious slutty wife for his emotional state. He is obviously under a lot of stress and an emotional rack not to evaluate the proper ways to react on national television and on such an event. Honestly I've never imagined him acting this way in private and definitely not in public. So why never beat the s**t out of the men your wife slept with, but slap around the man who makes a tasteless joke about her? Will has lost all connection to the mother ship, I tell ya.

I agree with Carrey. Everyone has become spineless, overly aggravated and exaggeratedly ultra-sensitive. What Smith did was uncouth and uncalled for. I'm never watching his movies again. Pity because "Independence Day" used to be one of my favorites. Is this what life has become? That even a joke will elicit such histrionics? Sad.

I think both men have done well. Jim for addressing the right issue and Will for admitting his wrong action and apologizing. Mistakes can always happen to anyone, but the more important part is how we deal with them afterwards. And it's definitely spineless to clap for something we know is wrong but because it is done by a public person we bend our moral standing on it. Not sure if Rock has apologized for such a bully comment though.

What did Will Smith mean "He is a work in Progress" and is not indicative of the "Man I want to be"? At his age and in his position he should know who and what he is by now! He proved that he is a violent man this is not the perception a black man should be showing to the public! Even in defense of his wife. He should have stood up took he hand and left. Maybe it I just me but I thought I saw as he was walking away from the confrontation a smirk on his face. He should have accepted the Oscar but not on stage as a protest to the comment made by Chris Rock and to the Academy for not curbing a comment like this!

I agree with Jim. Im still disgusted by the entire fiasco. So many people got robbed of their moment as this is all that will be remembered. Samuel L Jackson received an award. I would have loved to see that instead of Will receiving an Oscar. Too many people are out here reacting to similar situations with violence.....but they are slapping with BULLETS!

High five to Him Carrey's responses. @WillSmith was so wrong in so many ways that I've lost my taste to see the movie. His acceptance speech should have been an apology to @ChrisRock and a simple thank you for the award then leave the stage, instead he tried to justify his behavior into a normal action. Also stunned and incredibly disappointed that he was given a standing ovation as it only supports his BS justification and put a stamp of approval on his horrible behavior.

Maybe I'm just from a different generation because a part of me loved the slap. I don't condone violence but there's something to be said for a man standing up for his wife who is being made fun of for having an illness. Events like this welcome celebs being relentlessly made fun of because of the ridiculousness of the entire thing in a world where more important things are going on. They’re supposed to grin and bear it even when it’s overboard. To see someone stand up against it is refreshing. The problem is Smith was laughing during the joke and it wasn't until he saw Jada was upset that he went up on stage. If you’re going to be angry enough to respond that way, it shouldn’t be as some affected afterthought. Ricky Gervais made horrifying jokes at the audiences' expense during the GG hosting and no one turned to violence and it almost would have been understood. Chris did what he was paid to do which is make fun of celebs. He might not have even known about her illness.

He humiliated her in front of everyone for a laugh...Since no one else is calling out Rock for being a bully and coward... targeting a woman with a health issue for laughs! Well, if he says that you can't punch somebody because he said words, as if words don't have meaning, then all he said is just words too. You can actually fight for your right and your respect. What's this business of being all soft while saying awful things to people? He absolutely deserved his punch and it is superb that this is a precedent that if you get offended, you respond. All we have to do now is abolish politicans protection, so we can all punch loud and clear for what they have done to us. No more people doing awful things protected by the law.

I definitely love Jim Carrey's Donald Trump cartoons. They are hilarious.

Yes violence isn't the answer, but don't also tempt a patient man by insulting his wife on national TV. Both were wrong. ( ps- in many places in the US, Rock woulda got shot for his insult, just for some perspective. )

I think people are over looking the fact that he slapped Chris Rock because he knew there would be no physical retribution...he would never of slapped say a Duane Johnson or a Joe Rogan....it was straight up macho b******t from a flat track bully...

Please. Carey spent decades pushing anti-vax crap. If anyone should be sued for harming society its him.

They are those who don't know anything and don't trust and then they are the loonies that don't know anything but trust. You might just be one of them.

STFU Jim Carry....the standing ovation was for Will's acting accomplishment, something he earned and not at the expense of anyone else...personally, I applaud Smith for defending his Wife against yet ANOTHER cruel joke told by Rock at his Wife's expense.... He humiliated her in front of everyone for a laugh...Since no one else is calling out Rock for being a bully and coward... targeting a woman with a health issue for laughs! I will, Rock you owe Jada an apology..Smith manned up...Will you??

As long as we're clear about Will's rules. You can put your d**k in his wife's mouth. Just keep her name out yours!!!
