Killed For A Selfie: Baby Dolphin Dies After Being Passed Around By Tourists As They Posed For Photos With It On A Spanish Beach
When tourists in southern Spain discovered a baby dolphin that had lost its mother, they started taking selfies with the animal instead of calling someone to rescue it. According to Daily Mail, the workers arrived at the scene 15 minutes later, but the animal had already died from stress. They blasted the 'selfishness' of tourists who are 'obsessed' with taking photos: "Cetaceans are very susceptible to stress, and crowding round it to take photos and to touch it causes them a big shock which greatly accelerates cardio-respiratory failure, which is what happened."
Tourists Destroying Popular Oregon Rock Formation
The so-called “duckbill” sandstone formation was one of Oregon’s icons, protected by a fence to keep away people because it was unstable. However, this didn’t stop some vandals from climbing over the fence and pushing and pulling on the rock formation. Eventually, they knocked the rock down. Allegedly, the group of people did this because one of their friends had broken their leg because of the “duckbill”. The famous landmark was also known as “Pedestal Rock” and “that Pacific Northwest rock.”
Tourists Chase Peacocks, Rip Out Their Tail Feathers At Beijing Zoo
A Beijing wildlife park near the Great Wall became the scene of some serious animal cruelty. Chinese tourists were spotted chasing and catching peacocks, and then ripping out feathers from their tails. Some tourists tried to stop them but they were unsuccessful. The violent offenders did not stop until they scared away the last peacock.
Mob Of Tourists At Costa Rica’s Ostional Beach Prevents Sea Turtles From Nesting
The Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is one place where olive ridley sea turtles nest. Unfortunately for them, hundreds of tourists swarmed the beach and scared the turtles away, meaning a large number of them didn’t lay eggs. These tourists were angling for some good photos: some of them even stood on top of turtle nests, while others put their kids on top of the animals.
This beach should be fenced off at laying time until people can grow a brain and leave them alone.
If you where going into labour and loads of people stoped you from getting to hospital what would you do and how would you feel!!!

Some and I mean some good news came from this. After this incident the Costa Rican government has planned to double security and restrict access to nesting beaches. Also thankfully many turtles returned at night when the tourists were gone to lay their eggs. The nesting season lines up with Costa Rica's rainy season, and the flooded Nosara River usually blocks all access to the beach. That year, however, El Niño caused lower rainfall than usual, which made it too easy for tourists to swarm the beach.

Modern tourism is killing tourist spots, I'm so glad that I did my travelling in the 1960's & 70's, when there was still room to move.
The total stupidity and lack of care of some people is truly mind-boggling. However, in a case like this, I would say the government, or some ruling body with authority, should have closed the beach to everyone during the turtle breeding season - not let them even within visual distance, because stupid people will simply be stupid, no matter what.

CNN reported that authorities in Rome have slapped a 20,000 euros ($24,800) fine on a Russian tourist who carved his name into one of the city's most famous historic landmarks. The 42-year-old man was apprehended after a guard at the Colosseum saw him scratch the letter "K" in a section of brickwork. The graffiti was found on a ground floor section of the nearly-2,000 year-old structure where restoration work was taking place.

Jerk Tourists Chase Endangered Tibetan Antelopes For Photos, Get Fined
Seven people were fined for pursuing a herd of Tibetan antelopes with their cars. Driving two white SUVs, they trespassed into Selincuo National Nature Reserve in an attempt to take pictures of the animals. When the speeding cars got dangerously close to the antelopes, anonymous witnesses filmed and captured the illegal actions. After people started posting the footage on Weibo (China's equivalent of Twitter), it caused a huge backlash as netizens expressed anger over what they believed to be a careless and dangerous way to photograph the creatures. Later, Lhasa police made an official statement saying that the drivers had been detained and the cars they had hidden had been found. After a few vandals were caught on camera destroying the pillars of the Vishnu temple at the UNESCO world heritage site in Hampi, India, the locals started demanding strict action against them. Roughly a week after the video surfaced, Karnataka police have arrested four people.
All of them confessed to the vandalism. "They were excited [about] seeing the monuments in Hampi," Ballari SP Arun Rangarajan said. "They claim to have toppled the pillar in sheer excitement. They had no idea how historically significant Hampi is."
"All four have been [receiving death threats] since the video went viral."
Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India. It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century. A group of Chinese tourists damaged a 200,000-year-old land formation in a geopark in Zhangye, in central China. They bragged about it on a video-sharing platform called Douyin. The footage (now deleted) shows two men and a woman (not including the person behind the camera) walking on red and yellow stripes of sand, a signature of the Danxia land formation. There was a text next to the original upload: "Good things must be shared twice: we went through the back door and didn’t have to pay for a ticket. This area looks even better."
"I destroyed a 6,000-year-old [formation]," a member of the group was heard saying.
According to Liang Xiaofeng, an assistant researcher at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the bottom layers of the Danxia landform date back to the Cretaceous period, about 40 million to 100 million years ago. "That’s the era from the show Dinosaur Corps Koseidon, when all the dinosaurs were active,” he told South China Morning Post. The sand layer damaged by the tourists was estimated to have been formed 200,000 to 400,000 years ago.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to find the tourists as soon as the video became public, and experts were called in to determine the damage. According to the government's statement, railings around the affected area which had not yet been opened to the public were also damaged. The city's government said it has set up measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

It will never hurt to be extra careful and particular because would you actually risk destroying another 1000 year old antique over annoying several Chinese tourists? I remember my family went to the Giant Sequoias when I was 7 or 8. I said something to a couple who were ignoring all the signs not to walk around the tree roots. I see someone made the comment bubbling in my mind. Disrespect for the environment is a human fault, so this kind of vandalism is certainly not confined to one race group, but far too many of these incidents were caused by Chinese tourists. I believe the penalties for displaying such disrespect for public monuments would be dealt with harshly in their homeland. It is simply unacceptable that they visit other countries and display such contempt for their hosts.

I live near a national park and national forests. Tourists are *loathed* here. So far, no priceless ancient statues ruined, just priceless ancient rock formations and caves, some forest fires, piles of trash and human waste, and the selfies on cliffs, oh, yeah, and trampling endangered species. But they LOVE Nature... (note dripping sarcasm)
Need to start requiring people to purchase visas again before permitting them to travel.
If people behave like this when they travel, I can't imagine how they behave towards each other at home! I wasn't anywhere near middle class for a long time, but even I was taught manners: Don't touch ANYTHING that doesn't belong to you without permission. Keep your hands to yourself. Clean up after yourself. Don't yell at people if something's not going your way. In nature and in museums leave only footprints, take only photos (if you're allowed to take photos). Don't barge into places where the sign says "Do not enter". And this selfie taking thing is out of hand! Whom does one need to impress that they went to such-and-such-a-place? Nobody cares. And why would anyone outright destroy a monument or natural feature!? What kind of egotistical f****r does that?! The vanity and egotism of all this behavior is reprehensible.

I don't understand people like this..my mother taught me that unless told so, you never..EVER touch. you stand back: enjoy and observe..you might take a picture, if allowed, but you don't touch or disturb whatever art, nature, or animals that you are observing...if you must, you ask someone working there and if they say no, you go back to observing from a safe distance.

There are many positive applications of social media, but, as usual, people choose to act irresponsibly, stupidly, selfishly, and just plain nasty. Saw things like this around Arizona, where idiots would carve initials or whatever into ANCIENT petroglyphs. Social media has given these POS a perfect place to show the world their POS-ness. And, dang, if they're not so very, very proud of themselves. Social media has shown the world how really ugly people can be. I can't wrap my head around such things.
I come to BoredPanda for funny, silly, interesting and educational things. Reading and seeing people actively being horribly cruel to animals is NOT WHAT I'M HERE FOR. I visited Kenilworth Castle in the UK 35 years ago. It is a ruin, but was a functioning castle in the time of Elizabeth the First (so Shakespeare's time too). What struck me was the graffiti carved into the walls throughout the Castle. There was graffiti in Latin and dated in the 1700s. My companion said that it had to be new graffiti, but it was scratched out in the same type of script of that era, when the graffiti of the 1970s was just basic scratching. And the really old graffiti had aged significantly. (Mind you by that time my companion and I were getting on each other's wicks!)

Whatever the fines are, they are too low. Seems to me that the governments should take drastic measures to stop the vandalizing of historic places and nature reserve. Perhaps jail sentences up to 25 years will make people think before they destroy.

I remember my family went to the Giant Sequoias when I was 7 or 8. I said something to a couple who were ignoring all the signs not to walk around the tree roots. Higher fines and more protections in these areas might help but it is impossible to police the whole world and it takes away from the experience if you have to view everything from behind a fence. I think that there are just so many more of us that can travel now, it is far more common and this is the result.

Since most of these things happen because someone wants a selfie for social media, can we institute capital punishment? Or at least restrict them to using an old school flip phone and not allowed to own any camera?

I traveled to Japan and there was a lot of people Chinese, they are terrible people, don't have education, speak and scream loudly, bump in you and don't ask for sorry. There are many Chinese in Brazil and they think we make a favor to them buying their s**t. We don't trust in Chinese.
Notice how most of the tourists are Asians (Chinese). I don't think of myself as a racist, but I'm not at all surprised by this fact.
Just a quick observation.... I know the world hates America right now, but I saw very few, if any of these performed by Americans. If we were as terrible as everyone says, I'd think this list would be full of us.
