We've all heard about crappy design, something that turns a blind eye to user-friendliness, logic and common sense, aesthetics, and people in general. We’re talking billboards, TV ads, product packaging and product design, websites and apps, you name it.

The phenomenon of crappy design is that no matter how much our marketing strategies and advertising techniques have evolved in the past decades, it still finds its place in our daily lives. Check out some examples of crappy design in Bored Panda’s previous features here, here and here.

This time, we are taking a step further. Sometimes the design is so annoying, senseless and defunct that it seems like the brands are doing this deliberately or at least without shame. There’s even a whole corner of reddit dedicated to cases “when a*** design things.”

With a whopping 2.9 million members, the community pokes fun at the mentality that “nothing comes before profit, especially not the consumer.” Below, we wrapped up some of the evilest designs, so let us know what you think of them in the comments!

Appstore For You

Appstore For You

reddit.com Report

Bad design can be found everywhere, from the products we use every day to the websites we visit. Poorly designed products can be difficult to use, causing us to waste time and energy. They can also be dangerous, as faulty product or packaging designs can lead to accidents.

Meanwhile, websites with bad design can be hard to navigate, preventing us from finding the information we need. They can also be visually unappealing, making us less likely to return. At the same time app can have a very bad user experience which means people will be reluctant to use it. From confusing navigation to cluttered layouts, anyone can spot a very poor design.

Pinterest is a cesspool. I found some of my facebook photos had been uploaded on pinterest. A girl (wannabe maker/influencer/scammer) reuploaded them with her watermark and used them as example of her creations. Had to subscribe to the website to report the images, and after weeks of waiting... nothing happened. Zero answers, support or even an automated mail. In the meanwhile those images were stolen by others and popped around for a while on other websites, mostly on ads of promoting scams. Stopped uploading my work anywhere.

Jerk designs seem to take a step further than simply bad designs and come across as downright unethical and immoral. They snuck their way into the products and services we consume, and sometimes we don’t even notice them.

According to Danny Sapio, the lead product designer at Method and cofounder of Confettihabits.com, shrinkflation is a classic case of less product and more profit. “Companies use this tactic to discreetly sell less of a product at the same price that it was before.”

Moreover, Sapio argues that “companies can do this through labeling by displaying “FAMILY SIZE” or “PARTY SIZE” despite it being the same amount as the regular item.” For us, the unsuspecting shoppers, it’s something that’s really easy to miss.

Another great example of jer design practices is the use of lethal enforcers. They require the user to take the action that the company wants before they can do what they intend to do.

“Lethal enforcers are essentially a way that companies gatekeep the decision making for users. Instead of giving users a free choice, the company decides for the individual the decision that should be made then makes that their only choice,” Sapio explained.

An example of a lethal enforcer is when you want to write a review on Yelp but have to download the brand’s app first. “Or when a company suppresses relevant search results to display sponsored products or content.”

Another very shady design practice is throttling. “Throttling is when a company intentionally downgrades the service or product with the hopes that the customer upgrade. This is different than forced obsolescence because the product still works; it’s just much slower and shittier than it used to be,” the product designer explained.

It turns out that even giant brands like Apple have been found guilty of this. Apple has settled a class-action lawsuit over its practice of slowing down older iPhones, agreeing to pay up to $500 million to impacted consumers.

“Another example is ‘unlimited’ data providers that sneakily slow down internet speeds once they pass a certain threshold of data usage,” Sapio concluded.

This is absurd! Kids should be fed! PERIOD! Some students aren't fed breakfast at home. Lunch may be the only meal with substance they get all day!!!! Free lunches should be provided. Students don't learn well without sustenance!!!! I taught at an intercity, low income area. Our Principal paid for most of the students. She also purchased Red Devil hot sauce for each table. I taught for her eleven years. Then spent several years with absolute jerks until we finally had another outstanding administrator. So, I stayed another dozen years. She retired and we got stuck with an angry, self-aggrandizing monster who wanted to change everything. She micromanaged everything from lesson plans to recess. I left as soon as possible!

Yep. Here is a prime example of conservative values. They claim they want to protect the children and family values, but it is all b******t. They consistently pass agendas and policies and rules that harm children and families. The only "children" they care about are the unborn fetuses. The ones they really dont have to be actively involved in helping. And let's not forget that Jeff, Elon, Richard, and a handful of other billionaires could single handedly end world hunger, and still be billionaires. Yet, building penis rocket's is the legacy they would rather leave.

Inner city Philadelphia school breakfasts and lunches are free. Regrettably, in many cases it is all the kids will get to eat. However, in the suburbs where we live, school lunches are not free and you have to pay online to load up their school ID card they scan and if they don't have enough money on their card they can't buy whatever they were trying to get. There is nothing that reminds you of low balance, you just have to periodically check. That is why we pack lunches most times.

Great plan! Parents who can't feed their children lunch will have their children taken and put into wardship of the state and into foster care where the taxpayer is further burdened! And where 100% of the child's care is placed on the taxpayer! Brilliant!! What a dumba** response this is to an OBVIOUSLY already bad situation! Wake up, small-minded, punitive, buttwipes. Make improvements... not dumb a** policies!! Look ahead to easements, not added negative penalties with longterm negative outcomes. Sheeesh. What a brainless "solution" this will be!!

Is this satire? If not then as an Australian, I don't understand this for 2 reasons, most countries foster systems are over burdened, under funded and inadequate to meet children's needs (not the workers, the system) and it would cost more to have children in care, secondly, why don't parents pack a lunch for their child, I believe the lunches provided are not that healthy anyway. This is ridiculous. I'm just cross that it is the children who suffer.

If kids didn't have lunch money in my school we were given a peanut butter sandwich so we had something and usually the parents were called. In my youngest siblings school they have a milk table where kids are encouraged to put the packaged parts of their lunch (like milk, fruit cups, little bag of celery and carrots) that they don't want to eat so that someone else can take it quietly instead of the food getting thrown away.

Being Aussies. My kids were used to taking a good home made lunch to school. Moving the the USA. They asked for school lunches like everyone else got. Not even a month and they said they didn’t want them anymore, they felt sick after eating cafeteria food, and tired and had stomach upsets, so they went back to taking their own lunches again. Much happier and healthier kids. Even their skin was looking greyish and unhealthy and we lived in SoCal IN THE SUN daily.

We would give each kid $20.00 to put on their acct for their meals at school and they were suppose to let us know when they were low. Of course they would forget at times and if there was no money on their accts, they were given crackers. This was before they were old enough for cell phones to be able to let us know.

Yeah, that's correct. Same in England (Nationwide.) If you don't keep up with your child's lunch fees then the school will (after communication/ meeting with external agencies/ offering support etc) report the parent for neglect. It IS neglect of they don't pay and can't give an acceptable reason why. In England we also offer 'free school meals' for every low income family so if someone doesn't pay then it is a bit bizarre. Get onto social services straight away.

Just to add to this. My son starts year 3 (ages 7 to 8) tomorrow. From now on we have to pay for his meals. All kids in England get free meals up to and including year 2. I think the cost is £2.85 per meal or there abouts. If a parent meets the criteria then their child will get free school meals but I think they have to register for it.

If our taxes go towards schools, then how come they have to pay for lunch?! Lunch is literally necessary for survival. It is literally necessary for developing children to be able to have the attention they need to be able to learn! This is literally been proven!!!

There are ways to get free lunch at every school. Having worked in an elementary school for a number of years, the biggest offender tend to be people that CAN afford it, but don't feel they should have to pay

With all the taxes we pay, every student should get free breakfast and lunch in schools.

I agree with having the home situation looked into if they can't even pay a discounted lunch program or bring their lunch from home. The home conditions must be pretty dire, and the family needs support from other sources, or drugs/alcohol/ mental illness may be suspected.

There are 500 school districts in Pennsylvania. Each sets its own budget. Some areas of the state are extremely right-wing.

They want to bring back corporal punishment but not feed our kids. You want to be able to put your hands on my child for free but then you want me to pay you to feed them while they're under your care all day ??

I don't think I've ever lived in a state that didn't have at least a free lunch program you could sign up for if you were low income. I've lived in 14 of them. Some, were a lot harder to sign up for though. They required very specific income verification, that was hard to get, especially if you don't get SNAP. Our government is good at claiming these things are available to all, but making them really hard to access, so you end up with these bills while they process your paperwork. Or, sometimes they manage to approve some kids in the family while leaving one out, then you have to pay while it's being fixed. Our current school district made breakfast and lunch free for all students a couple years ago, and it's great. Also, just being poor greatly increases your chances of having social services at some point, and makes it a lot harder to get rid of them.

This is irksome!! Kids are required to be there and can't leave for lunch so they are either forced to bring something from home that will sit in a bag all day because there is no access to a refrigerator or microwave or the students can pay for outrageously priced school lunch. And if you don't send your kid to school you get fined, go to jail and/or lose your kid! And now if you don't pay the school's ransom you could lose your kid!! The last couple years for covid relief they've had free lunches for all students but they only offered one option instead of two so if your kid is normal and picky they might barely eat lunch. They should have a choice of at least two things and free lunch for everyone!!

Many groups and individuals wish for a government controlled child rearing system. You give birth to the kid but the government immediately takes control moving them into "orphanages" until they're 18 at which point your free claim them. It would eliminate so many problems apparently the foremost being religious indoctrination.

My school actually did the opposite, back in 2000. My mom got a promotion at work, and informed the school that we aren't supposed to pay reduced price anymore (50cents). The school told her that she was wrong. Lol.

I actually had the opposite right after year 2000. I had been on "reduced" lunch most of my life. Usually 25-50cents. Then in highschool, my mother got a promotion at work, and we had more money. She reported to the school that we are supped to pay full price now, and the school told her that she's wrong. Lol!

Being unable to feed your children would be an entirely reasonable justification for removing them from your care, if Americans were interested in actually bettering the lot of children. The US is #22 (below Greece!) in the list of best countries in which to raise a child for good reason. Horrifying infant mortality among minorities and the poor, a K-12 system that is the shame of the developed world, millions of kids with little or no access to health care, and a percentage of children who go to school hungry normally associated with African drought.

The people not understanding this. There is lunch debt meaning the kids are eating regardless if they pay. The parents are neglecting their duty to provide money for food therefor it's possible neglect and should be called in. This is not a small lunch debt. This is large amount which shows the parents may be neglecting children at home.

Or it shows that people are poor? About 64% of students in the district were living in poverty. It was about 1000 families, not one family with a huge debt. (A few families had debts of almost$500 each. Most were much smaller amounts.) Threatening to remove kids for $75 of unpaid lunch bills, when those kids qualified for free lunch. They refused donations to cover it. The district did a s#itty job of handling it. They failed to communicate with the families, to get them on lunch programs for which they were qualified.

I'm a little torn on this one. All public schools in the United States have a free lunch program. And it's not that hard to qualify for it. All a parent has to do is full out the paperwork. If a parent is unwilling to spend 3 minutes filling out paperwork so their child can eat, well I would consider that lazy to the point of neglect. Children should be provided lunch at school regardless of ability to pay. But I don't think Jeff Bezos kids should get free lunch.

Absolutely untrue. There is a lunch program, yes. It is not free to all. You must fill out the form every year and if your income exceeds an arbitrary ridiculous low amount, then you do not qualify for free or even reduced. Single income household of less than $55,000 yearly? Can’t afford to live in a 2 bedroom apartment and pay for basics like utilities, food, and transportation to get to work. But make too much $$ to qualify for free or reduced price school lunch.

I don't know how it works in America, but here lunch bill is paid monthly. For kids from poor familier there are programs, that reduce the bill or it's paid completely by school. I grew up poor, and my little brother had whole lunch bill paid by school.

If a school or system participates in the Federal School Lunch Program, parents can sign up each year for reduced price or free lunches for their kids (and often breakfast too). However, the process could certainly be made easier!

Parents are given ample time to pay. Schools are not charities and should not have to feed your kid because you’re too lazy to make a peanut butter sandwich.
