We've all heard about crappy design, something that turns a blind eye to user-friendliness, logic and common sense, aesthetics, and people in general. We’re talking billboards, TV ads, product packaging and product design, websites and apps, you name it.

The phenomenon of crappy design is that no matter how much our marketing strategies and advertising techniques have evolved in the past decades, it still finds its place in our daily lives. Check out some examples of crappy design in Bored Panda’s previous features here, here and here.

This time, we are taking a step further. Sometimes the design is so annoying, senseless and defunct that it seems like the brands are doing this deliberately or at least without shame. There’s even a whole corner of reddit dedicated to cases “when a*** design things.”

With a whopping 2.9 million members, the community pokes fun at the mentality that “nothing comes before profit, especially not the consumer.” Below, we wrapped up some of the evilest designs, so let us know what you think of them in the comments!

Meanwhile in the "evil" EU: "if you could click to verify that the taxes we calculated for you are correct, that would be very nice. By the way, we will return some of the money back to you in a few months".

The only people who think the EU is evil are people who think that words with the root of "social" or "community" are slurs to use against the enemy. I'm not saying those of us who are still sane look at the whole EU and see a utopia, but it is at worst a case study for several things a lot of other places could do better.

I lived in the US for many years, doing taxes got easier over the years, but still... Moved back to Finland after hubby died, got a letter from our IRS. All I had to do was to check it was ok, sign and send back. That was 2 years ago. Now it is over the net. Of course, I get a paper copy at some point, but I automatically get my refund at a set date, if I owe I put it in the system how much I want to pay each month

Accurate, but I'll still take playing a game with a toddler. Not that I mind paying taxes, it's all the other stuff involved (though to be fair, you have to work pretty hard to actually go to prison for "just" messing up taxes at least in the US, but it's distressingly easy to end up owing more.)

Really, folks, very few people (too few, in fact) go to jail for tax evasion in the US. In my time as an auditor, I saw only one person arrested. And that wasn't for tax evasion - it was for child molestation. He was on the run from the police but still showed up for his tax audit. The cops found out about it and were waiting for him as he left my office. The mother of his victim, his ex-stepdaughter, had set him up good.

The IRS doesn't know exactly how much you owe, they know how much you earn which is not the same thing. How much you owe depends on deductions from earnings which can be really complex.

The government creates the environment where trade and money can happen safely. Think of it as paying for the service of being able to have a safe environment for commerce. Sure, some places are better at it than others, and we also let those who use the system the most pay too low a rate, but it is, actually, pretty fair. I do like places without sales tax though.

The US government may have an idea of what you owe based on your withholding, but they don't know if you added or lost a dependent, have a business loss to deduct, sold a long term asset and owe taxes on that, etc. And no, you don't "go to prison." You get a letter that says we think you underpaid, here's what you owe, you have a certain time to appeal, and we can set up a payment plan if you are unable to pay it all at once. Prison is if you willfully conceal income and refuse to pay the taxes you actually owe.

charlesbosse avatar

Uh, generally they do know that stuff, several attempts to simplify the tax code have been thwarted by a narrow band of people so it is intentionally more convoluted, and in cases where they didn't know that, you wouldn't check the "this all looks right" box in a system where we certified our taxes annually. Oh, and while I definitely agree that the threat of prison is almost nonexistent for simply making a mistake, owing more money (not what you originally owed, but that plus a chunk) is virtually guaranteed.

This is wildly incorrect. Its called deductions. The gov't is not aware of how much student loan interest, mortgage interest, donations, childcare spending, business expenses you made and like 89,000 other lines of deductions to lower your tax burden. They know how much you owe/are owed solely based on your recorded W-2 income. That number is NEVER the actual number in the end. Maybe process more than 1 tax return before trying to sound clever.

That is the whole point of this satirical tweet, our code is a mess. It's unfair, it's complicated, it's inefficient, needs to be fixed. And the way to fix it is to do it big, as other countries have done. The IRS already has a good idea of what you should be paying. All your earnings and property are already tied to your personal information, and that information has been reported to the tax agency, so estimated filings would be a trivial amount of extra work for the IRS. The problem is that tax preparation companies spend millions of dollars every year to convince lawmakers to keep the tax system complicated and confusing, so consumers are forced to purchase their products every year.

Where does that happen EXACTLY like this?! My understanding of the system in my country is you submit your tax return, and if there is a discrepancy they send a bill. If you don't pay the bill, then you get taken to court, and they can garner your bank accounts, and you might get sent to prison.

I think you are forgetting that a large number of people (basically anyone who wasn't in a European family) did not, in fact, keep their wages in 1812, and that the country leaned heavily on import and export which was essentially enough sales tax to keep the then very small upstart government running. Oh, and we totally shrugged of helping France after they put substantial resources into our biggest war and instead went to war with them, and that war in 1812 went all the way north to Maryland before we stopped the invading British forces, so it wasn't exactly a resounding success. Also, the IRS is absolutely going to be scrutinizing Amazon, as anything they can dig up would be a huge political win even among many people who use or work for Amazon.

Bad design can be found everywhere, from the products we use every day to the websites we visit. Poorly designed products can be difficult to use, causing us to waste time and energy. They can also be dangerous, as faulty product or packaging designs can lead to accidents.

Meanwhile, websites with bad design can be hard to navigate, preventing us from finding the information we need. They can also be visually unappealing, making us less likely to return. At the same time app can have a very bad user experience which means people will be reluctant to use it. From confusing navigation to cluttered layouts, anyone can spot a very poor design.

A girl (wannabe maker/influencer/scammer) reuploaded them with her watermark and used them as example of her creations. Had to subscribe to the website to report the images, and after weeks of waiting... nothing happened. Zero answers, support or even an automated mail. In the meanwhile those images were stolen by others and popped around for a while on other websites, mostly on ads of promoting scams. Stopped uploading my work anywhere.

Jerk designs seem to take a step further than simply bad designs and come across as downright unethical and immoral. They snuck their way into the products and services we consume, and sometimes we don’t even notice them.

According to Danny Sapio, the lead product designer at Method and cofounder of Confettihabits.com, shrinkflation is a classic case of less product and more profit. “Companies use this tactic to discreetly sell less of a product at the same price that it was before.”

Moreover, Sapio argues that “companies can do this through labeling by displaying “FAMILY SIZE” or “PARTY SIZE” despite it being the same amount as the regular item.” For us, the unsuspecting shoppers, it’s something that’s really easy to miss.

Another great example of jer design practices is the use of lethal enforcers. They require the user to take the action that the company wants before they can do what they intend to do.

“Lethal enforcers are essentially a way that companies gatekeep the decision making for users. Instead of giving users a free choice, the company decides for the individual the decision that should be made then makes that their only choice,” Sapio explained.

An example of a lethal enforcer is when you want to write a review on Yelp but have to download the brand’s app first. “Or when a company suppresses relevant search results to display sponsored products or content.”

Another very shady design practice is throttling. “Throttling is when a company intentionally downgrades the service or product with the hopes that the customer upgrade. This is different than forced obsolescence because the product still works; it’s just much slower and shittier than it used to be,” the product designer explained.

It turns out that even giant brands like Apple have been found guilty of this. Apple has settled a class-action lawsuit over its practice of slowing down older iPhones, agreeing to pay up to $500 million to impacted consumers.

“Another example is ‘unlimited’ data providers that sneakily slow down internet speeds once they pass a certain threshold of data usage,” Sapio concluded.
