Actor Jason Momoa may not have been a part of the recent epic Game of Thrones battle onscreen – but the star is still using his Dothraki strength to fight even bigger battles offscreen. In an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show Momoa showed off his ax-throwing skills to raise funds for his battle against plastic pollution.
But before he got into the ax-wielding, the 39-year-old chatted about the Oscars and more importantly, explained his newly shaven beard and how it tied into his newest environmental mission. The new look had trended across the internet and was his way of raising awareness about his new company Mananalu, which produces canned water as an alternative single-use plastic water bottles.
Actor Jason Momoa stopped by the Ellen Degeneres Show to throw some axes for charity
In his Instagram posts, he shared from the show he admitted he had some pre-show jitters when it came to speaking about this important cause: “I was very nervous because I came on to talk about something that I love dearly. Our Mother Earth and what I can do to help,” he wrote. “I have a mission to get rid of single use plastic water bottles. To clean up our oceans and land. To ask ourselves how we hydrate. Even though I may carry a canteen to try to reduce these plastics are still being made.”
He explained in the chair that his role in Aquaman had been part of his motivation to start the sustainable water company. “I’m Aquaman now and I have all these little beautiful kids come up to me, and I never thought I’d be a role model,” Momoa told DeGeneres. “So I wanted to save the planet from single-use plastics.”
Talks are underway for Aquaman 2, which the actor said joins ocean and earth. More than a creative project he explained that this environmental threat is not a movie, “There’s no outside alien destroying Earth, it’s us,’ he said. “So I was excited to get back in there so I’m working with our previous writer. We’ve got a locked story and we’re getting into it. I think it’s gonna be in like two years or something, the beard will be back by then.” Momoa added, “I wanted to kind of save the planet from single use plastics. I was looking at all these statistics where it’s like, 91% of all the plastics we’re using aren’t recyclable.”
After the interview, it was time to throw some axes
He began by giving Ellen a short lesson, “So here’s the thing, because we throw footballs and baseballs, everyone kind of turns it like this,” Momoa explained to the host, demonstrating the proper way to throw an axe. “It has to go straight over your head … it has to go right with the grain.”
However, as you can imagine throwing an ax is way harder than it looks so the actor decided that after her attempt it might be time for him to take over
Before he took a swing though, Degeneres’s producer Andy Lassner added some water bottle shaped targets to the board for an even better visual
The organization stunt was not only entertaining to the audience but was for a good cause to raise money for the organization ‘Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.’
Which according to their website is: “A grassroots, local nonprofit organization run by a small team of dedicated staff and supported by passionate volunteers, just like you. We inspire local communities to care for their coastlines through fun, hands-on beach cleanups. We also coordinate educational programs, team building corporate cleanups, waste diversion services, public awareness campaigns and help others run their own beach cleanups.”
In 45 seconds Momoa raised $31,000 for the beach cleanup charity. DeGeneres joked that they only thought he would get up to $10,000, so a sharpie was brought out so they could cross out the “10” and write “31” over it.

Share on FacebookHe's about as handsome a human as I ever saw. Also, what? He's wearing Birkenstock's??? I swoon!
Sooo, actually what happened is he probably spent a great deal of time promoting this cause. He spent time with a go between to bring his cause on Ellen, giving him an opportunity to raise more money. As a fundraiser I can safely say, even for a celebrity, raising money is neither quick nor easy.
He said during the interview that he'd tried to get on her show to have her shave his beard to raise awareness for his cause. I'm pretty sure he really does want to raise awareness more than money.
