I Went To Bangkok Just To Try This 70+ Year Old Chef’s Street Food Which Received A Michelin Star
I went to Bangkok for one reason. To eat at Jai Fai. She has been featured on various TV shows and YouTube channels. I think why it was so important to me to go was because she seemed to have retained her street food simplicity. She is one of only two Michelin star recipients that sell street food in Thailand. She doesn’t care for it much and doesn’t even display it in her restaurant.
However, the food is that good. She deserves that star. She is a fierce 70-something cook. One who still smiled and gave my kids a hug. She is a food rockstar.
This is Jan Fai, one of only two Michelin star recipients that sell street food in Thailand
She is a fierce 70-something cook, and she serves only 7 tables at a time
Only two tables are allowed to be reserved – we wrote our name down at 12, went to a nearby coffee and were seated at 2.30 when the restaurant was opened
Her kitchen. She cooks on these super hot charcoal burners
She is the only one who cooks the food. She has assistants passing her things and preparing ingedients, but the final dish is prepared solely by her
The restaurant before it opens
The staff was super friendly. No attitude detected. Even ran after me when I forgot my “doggy bag”
Preparing a tester dish before the restaurant opens. She wears the goggles to protect her eyes from the oil and smoke
The menu
Lots of people stop to take her picture. She carries on cooking regardless
Crab omelette. The dish that made her famous. It is amazing
The inside of the omelette. Stuffed with crab and deliciousness
Drunken noodles. Super spicy and amazing
These noodles are not spicy, for the kiddies
The bills. Equals to about 70 USD. This is expensive for street food. But always worth it, and the cheapest (only) Michelin star quality meal I’ll probably ever have

Share on FacebookHey, non spicy food is not just for kids! Speaking as someone who generally doesn't like spicy dishes.
I loved spicy and hot foods up until about ten years ago when my stomach said No More! I can't even eat onions now unless they are cooked. Bummer. So I enjoy nonspicy foods now.

Man those pictures made my mouth water, looks so amazing! Sometimes the price is worth the experience alone
It is so amazing that she could have monetized her name but instead settled to just the basic. I wonder who will continue her legacy someday.
She didn't want to get all Thai'd up with big business
Load More Replies...What?! I live in Thailand and no one would buy that food who isn't a rich tourist. She is cooking village food, which is my favorite, but her prices are a least 10 times too much, but mostly 30 times too much. I'd be amazed if she wasn't using the exact same ingredients that go into all Thai village food, which isn't good for you, like cheap oil, sugar, MSG, and salt.
The food looks really fancy !!!! The restaurant seems cozy and her cooking looks like she is doing construction work lol like welding !!! lmao I wish I could go there.
Way Too Expensive for Street Food. She may be the only one that has been tested and judged. I bet, stacks of street food is as delicious and for only 50 to 150 baht.. I've had Great Tom Yum Goong that could not taste any better . Over zealous and not dignified for the price for an over priced accolade. But good on her anyway.
johns roast pork in philly has two michellin stars and you can get a sandwich for 10 bucks
Thai food is amazingly delicios when I ask 'not spice' at ordering. If I forget and they make like always - I feel I am going to be an Eric Cartman crapping blood in the 'Dead Celebrities ' episode.
There are cheaper michelin starred hawker stalls in singapore. Waaaay cheaper.
Holy s**t 75 dollar. The money didn't go into improving the restaurants atmosphere apparantly haha. Still curious to what it tastes like. Looks tasty.
You were robbed unless math is different in Thailand. 500 + 500 = 1000, Not 2000 as shown on bill. Guess the 320 baht was tax,LOL (btw,I've been to Bangkok, I liked the sign in airport posted "Cab drivers have 3 speeds here,Fast, faster, and OMG !
Are you joking? There's a 1000 above 500 & 500.
