Hater Gets Quickly Shut Down After Attacking Will Smith For Promoting His Son’s Bottled Water

Celebrities and brands often go hand in hand, be it a sponsored deal, a partnership or their own brand. And while people naturally flock to products endorsed by their favorite actors, models and social media stars, critics of capitalism and consumerism bring out some legitimate points against such practices.
Plenty of people shared similar sentiments when Will Smith decided to switch his career as an actor, rapper, and now a YouTuber for a day as a Boots UK sales assistant in 2018. It wasn’t that he felt bored or wanted some new experiences to spice things up in his life, no. The proud father was promoting his son Jaden’s brand of bottled water called ‘Just Water’. And as soon as photos and posts emerged on the internet, it received praise as well as criticism.
In 2018 Will Smith worked a shift at Boots in London to promote his son’s brand ‘Just Water’

Some users on Tumblr immediately jumped to attack not only Jaden’s brand and the fact that he sells water, but also that it was promoted. However, it didn’t take long for someone to quickly defend the celebrity family as they presented some unexpected facts about Smith’s company.

However, not everyone was pleased with such a gesture
Turns out, while Jaden Smith sells bottled water, there’s more to this brand than might appear from the get-go. According to the official website, ‘Just Water’ is sustainably sourced from Glens Falls, NY and has a packaging that’s 100% recyclable, 82% renewable and also refillable, with the bottle having a wide neck to make it easy to refill. “Every choice we make is considered, from where our natural spring water comes from, to the materials that are used to make our ocean conscious bottle,” the site claims. “When it comes to our environment, we know that one bottle might not change the world. But it’s a start”.
As some attacked Will and his son for their product, someone stepped in to defend them
With the help of his parents, Jaden Smith co-founded ‘Just Water’ in 2012 after seeing plastic pollution first hand. He felt the need to change something about it and decided to produce a more eco-friendly brand of water. After all, we all need it to survive.

The water comes from Glens Falls where snow and rain produce 3 billion gallons of water every year. While the city uses half of the collected water, ‘Just Water’ uses only a fraction of what remains all while paying 6 times the normal rate for using it. “By placing a greater value on an abundant natural resource which has been historically undervalued, we provided a new income source for the city which is expected to reach $1 million over the next 3-5 years,” the company explains. While most bottled water is purified tap water (a process which wastes water and energy), Jaden’s product is naturally sourced and comes with naturally occurring minerals and pH content.
And here’s how people responded to the exchange between the users
As for the packaging? While most of their competitors use plastic bottles to contain their water, Smith’s product is stored in cartons that are made mostly of paper. “We use paper made from trees that are responsibly harvested and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council,” the site details. They also mention that paper is a renewable source that also contributes to lower carbon emissions. To seal the paper and prevent it from breaking, ‘Just Water’ uses plastic. Although that might immediately raise red flags for most readers, the company claims that their plastic is made mostly out of sugarcane.
The company has also teamed up with the local community so they could work hand-in-hand to create a more sustainable brand. ‘Just Water’ first started in a local abandoned church and united people to revitalize their own city. While buying out a fraction of the city’s abundant source of water, ‘Just Water’ gives back by putting in efforts to fix the city’s aged infrastructure. “Many of the century-old pipes in the municipal water system are still in use. They are leaky and inefficient, with 500 million gallons being lost through the cracks annually,” the site explains the issue. ‘Just Water’ puts in a share of the capital to help fix those issues.
Of course, most of the criticism coming from the outside is valid, but a lot of people commend the young entrepreneur for his effort to change how the water business works. And while there are pros and cons to the situation, there are differing opinions. What do you think?

Oh my god people, please get educated. The packaging they are using is as bad as plastic bottles. It is made of carton+alumium+bpa-free plastic, which means those 3 layer are stuck together and you cannot imagine how hard and expensive is the process of dividing those layers. This type of packaging is worse to recycle than plastic bottles, because plastic bottles are made from plastic and plastic ONLY. This is why there was one comment that a girl managed to reuse the bottle for a whole month. Because it's not biodegradable obviously. And the "reflective insides" that keep the liquid cool? It's aluminium, glued to plastic, glued to the board. Very nice indeed. Very shiny, very neat. This water packaging cannot be recycled with paper, nor with plastic. It should be thrown out with the common waste because it is practically non-recyclable. Then it goes to a landfill and into the ground. So those lovely colorful watter bottles you are all currently admiring - not nature-friendly at all.
I was wondering about that “It's made out of paper“ comment too. To make paper water proof, it has to be insulated with plastic. As you said, the result is literally the worst material. I wonder whether the Smiths know that.
I'm sure they know, they just don't care. I have a feeling this was just a busy project to keep their idiot son out of trouble and out of the media for said trouble.
Aluminum cans for the win
Wij easy to recycle though!
aluminum cans are expensive....so no win there, just for the manufacturer.
Do I see it right, is it really £4 (FOUR POUND) for a bottle of water? And people still buy this shit? I'll just stick with tap water, it's way cheaper, better quality than most bottled waters, and definitely more environmentally friendly than US water being shipped to friggin UK. .

You are not that bright, are you? At least the Smith Water Company doesn't ship water. It would have took you 30 sec and some brainpower to check that. Welcome to the internet.
"Doesn't ship water"? So it appears magically in the store? You are dumb beyond all recognition.
No, they just damage the environment even more by producing 3x the materials to make that "paper" bottle water-proof, consequently pumping more pollution into the environment to recycle the damn thing. But at least they're not shipping water. Fucking liberal.
I can get water out of my faucet for 0.15 cents per gallon.
Mhm, but some people can't. The reason why he started the company. Which was said IN THIS article. Nonsensical comment.
So by selling bottled water for a tasty profit, a few people who can't get water now can. If they wanted to make a difference, they would be distributing water in tankers.
Everyone Can get water out of their tap, and get a brita water filter since the 90s
Almost everybody can. Some people do not have access to running water, and this water cannot possibly be in a price range to be affordable, and then you have cases of polluted groundwater, as in Flint. They shouldn't have to spend a single cent on it - but we ought to be out in the streets shouting our heads off en masse to force polluting companies to stop polluting!
After living my life on well water, city water tastes bad to me. I either bottle up my well water or buy spring water when I'm away from home. Every time I do buy bottled water, I check the water source because I don't like the after taste of any municipal treated water.
You could always try a water filter
I can get it too but it's yellow, full of toxic chemicals and they did a study in china not long ago showing that the fluoride that they add to our water for our dental health (you know the government just really cares about your teeth, that must be why they put toxic chemicals in your water that you're not supposed to ingest at all and are actually only supposed to be used topically) actually causes brain lesions and lowers your IQ but hey if you want to drink yellow toxin filled water be my guest. ill stick to bottled water
It wasn't for posting the comment. People commend you for saying what you want. It's that what you said was stupid.
lmao the psycho misandrists downvoted me to -1 for posting this comment. jesus and they still wonder why the world thinks they're all insane
Bottled water isn't anywhere near as regulated as tap water is. They can literally put anything in it and you wouldn't know. The bottles release microplastics into the water you drink in addition to the ones you already ingest. Hot tap water is dangerous because of the lead content of the pipes. but cold tap water is completely fine
Dude, some people just don't appreciate the father-son bond some people have .-. But I gotta say, nice job to those people SLAYING that hater with facts (^v^)
This feels like an advert. A few things I noted: 1. Turning up for you first day at work wearing jeans? Get him his p45. 2. Shipping water that far, then claiming it to be environmental friendly? Pull the it other one. 3. Can be recycled is not the same as will be recycled. Loads of Britain's 'recycling ' is being dumped on developing countries. 4. 4 quid a carton? You're having a bubble mate.
When the parents desperately want to keep their idiot son busy and out of the media so he'll stop being a public embarrassment to them. Stop buying overpriced gimmicky crap, get a good filter for your tap and a travel cup.
What a load of shit. Bottled water businesses do not produce water, they produce bottles.
It's good that he is branching out. I watched the movie After Earth... that kid can't act.
I'm just... I'm really with the person/people who say "IT'S WATER. WE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO SELL IT!" Just, goddammit world, can't we just ditch fucking capitalism already?
we ditched capitalism in the USSR. my family were among the millions murdered during holodomir. i think i'd rather keep our capitalism here in the US. it's kinda why we left the USSR and immigrated here in the first place.
"It's only the miracle of consumer capitalism that means you're not lying in your own shit, dying at 43 with rotten teeth. And a little pill with a chicken on it is not going to change that. Now come on... fuck off." Best quote for you socialists.

"Look, I hate capitalism". Said on a webpage which was brought to you by capitalism.
Hats off to the Smith's! Their son took a step so many grown ups won't take. These celebrities have steped up to the plate in so many ways and help so many people out. Our people in Flint, MI have greatly benefitted by this young man as well. His parent's should be proud of him and the steps he has taken to save this planet and help some of the people in it. How many other kids his age are forward thinking like he is? Will Smith, you keep standing proud behind your son and keep supporting him. I think it would benefit the United States if his product was sold here as well. It's fine to spread your product in as many markets as you can just make sure the country you live in and get the water from is benefitted as well.
Who do you need to blow to get more shelf space than reputable brands.....?
WOW, and I mean just wow!! As someone in the comments in the article said, my head spun around so fast I had to stop for a minute to think it over. Like it or not we live in a capitalist world, but here is a person who is not only trying to make a living but who is helping out the community here is sourcing from and is also willing to help the folks in Flint MI, who have been abandoned by the government. Seriously, what is not to like about this? Not to mention KUDOS for Will Smith for going the extra mile to help not only his son but a worthy cause as well. Good on all of them and shame on the haters. But, as someone said, haters gotta hate, so sad.
What you don't understand?
Why be so harsh on that kid, his heart is in the right place and hopefully in the future he'll do much more for the environment. If we had that water in Belgium, I'd get me a bottle!
Bottled water is bullshit by design. Especially in these small packages, come on! Recyclable bottle is nice, but it does not miraculously recycle itself, does it? If people don't throw it away properly it' yet another piece of unecessary plastic. If Smith wanted to change the world for the better, he would campaign against bottled water, not make a new brand of it. Try to make people change their behaviour. But what he actually wants is to make money (I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but be honest about it!). So he caters to what people already do and buy (f*cking 0.5L bottled water), just with nice PR. Painting your brand in positive colours ("look, we are environment-friendly, we are lgbt-friendly, we are not like the others") is absolutely logical. What makes me really mad is that people buy this bs and applaud him.
not everyone can drink tap water......
Then buy a large container and not a tiny 0.5L bottle?
Big water is selling lies. Hose water from neighbor is free
Water is H2O, no magic, but how about bottle?
Yeah sure, it make perfect sense to craft bottles, put water in it in the US & send it to all "developped" countries all over the world (this water is sold i Japan too), where drinkable water is accessible almost everywhere. Package is reusable? Awesome. Just telling : plastic bottles are actually reusable. A lot. Pro tip : flasks are kinda reusable too. My father is using his for 35 years now. And it is recyclable. Even more than this mass of paper + plastic + aluminium. Actually, even plastic bottles are easier to recycle. This is just cheap marketing and greenwashing to sell a ressource that is one the the most accessible (again, in "developped" countries, they don't sell it to poorer countries). Last tip : you live in a western countries ? You can get - litterally - drinkable "just water" from your tap, or anyone's tap. It is as hydrating as any other water. Amazing, right ?
What is sad is that our tap water has come to this. This crap should be fixed, it's embarrassing that we mostly drink bottled water. Fix the healthcare, the vets, homeless, education then our water and that should be our priorities.
I can understand buying a brand of water. I used to not really think there was much of a difference. Then one day I was given a free bottle of Icelandic water and it tasted crisp and fresh. I do have a favorite brand of water now, lol. I don't buy it often though because I don't like supporting buying water in plastic containers. When I do, I always reuse the bottles until they are not reusable anymore and then I recycle them.
I always find it amazing number of people who assign morality to an inanimate object or a concept or a methodology. These things by their nature cannot be moral or immoral, they are things. People are moral or immoral by their thoughts and actions. Capitalism has no morals, a gun has no morals, a flower has no morals, but people certainly do. Blaming a thing or system is denying responsibility to those involved in moral and immoral decisions. As far as this water project goes, good on Jayden Smith and good on Will Smith for doing his best to raise his child correctly when surrounded by unlimited funds and temptations.
Good for them.
looks like a solid product. Many uber rich kids act the fool and only enrich themselves. This one is helping others, and Will is being a good Dad. Bravo
Yeah and he's not getting ANY money out of the deal. don;t believe that for one second.
people are jerks
Rainbow water hmmmm
Since bottled water is part of our global economy, it makes sense for someone to produce it in a much better way. What would be good is if the business and production model could be transferred and scaled to create multiple local systems that offered the same benefits to different local communities, rather than shipping a single source product around the world. As for Dad supporting his kid, no one gets to complain about that unless they want to be a big old poo-poo head.
If i drank bottled water, i would support this
First, if this is actually the same as NYC tap, I will buy it for the rest of my damn life. Second, as much as I eye-roll at this kiddo on a kiddo level, when I heard it was his water, I knew it would have a "whiplash" set of receipts. The kid can come off pretentious or just... extra extra. But he's got the capital to research and fund projects like this. Props for actually doing it.
I was half expecting someone to go off on Will appropriating British culture ;) Luckily it was just some uneducated cynicism that quickly turned around!
My heart has been warmed!
Smith and his family are examples of Americans who understand and appreciate the value of capitalism and apply it to better themselves and the world around them. People who constantly whine about capitalism should take notes and learn something here
And now he's selling water for 4£, in a hard recyclable bottle, that cames from across the ocean. Your kind of capitalism may put a roof over YOUR head, but it's fu©king half the planet.
my capitalism isnt fucking anyone over. you're fucking yourself over because you're dumb and bad with money. stop crying and git gud
Take notes about what? How commodifying and making essential resources private property is the foundation of crapitalism so that life itself is exploitable?
Dave G cant be replied to. It must have been his long diatribe
hey everyone my name's valerie and i suffer from chronic autism. i am really uneducated and bad with money, but instead of taking responsibility for my own incompetence i just blame it on whatever scapegoats are most convenient to me (e.g. capitalism) and post long diatribes whining about it on the internet. be me!
Yes. You're capitalism is fu©king this planet. Dumbass.
lol i loved the whole "look, I hate capitalism too, but..." comments. When will these air-headed liberals ever learn that capitalism is the only reason they're not standing in bread lines for food and having their roof collapse on their heads while they're asleep. Capitalism is a blessing and it is the reason why we enjoy such a high quality of life in the western world. Will Smith is obviously a staunch capitalist and has been one for most of his adult life. He's a very wealthy man who made his fortune thanks to capitalism. He engaged in a profitable occupation (acting, music, etc) and made a fortune that later enabled him to provide a good life and future for his son, who in turn was able to start his own water business. This is capitalism done right and anyone who complains about it is an idiot
And now he's selling water for 4£, in a hard recyclable bottle, that cames from across the ocean. Your kind of capitalism may put a roof over YOUR head, but it's fu©king half the planet.
lol, get out of here with your crapitalism shilling.
come to russia with your socialist bullshit. the survivors of holodomor and their families will lynch you there.
lol get out of here with your commie shilling pinko
He's a bit dim on occasion but who isn't, his hearts in the right place though bless him
well good for the supposed environmental concern, but I still don;t care for either one of them as actors.
Sooo now we're complaining when parents ARE involved into the things their kids are interested in?? I'm so over the society lately when will we realize we dont ALWAYS have to be mad about something???
Trolls are angry people who need counseling I know i used to be one.
love this, but there is one correction that i would like to be. Jaden Smith is non-binary, making Will smiths Child, not his son

This is capitalism done right and anyone who complains about it is an idiot

lol, get out of here with your crapitalism shilling.
come to russia with your socialist bullshit. the survivors of holodomor and their families will lynch you there.
lol get out of here with your commie shilling pinko
He's a bit dim on occasion but who isn't, his hearts in the right place though bless him
well good for the supposed environmental concern, but I still don;t care for either one of them as actors.
Sooo now we're complaining when parents ARE involved into the things their kids are interested in?? I'm so over the society lately when will we realize we dont ALWAYS have to be mad about something???
Trolls are angry people who need counseling I know i used to be one.
love this, but there is one correction that i would like to be. Jaden Smith is non-binary, making Will smiths Child, not his son
