Photographer Tests How His $13,000 Camera Compares To The New iPhone 11 Pro, Posts The Results

Some days it feels like technology is already so advanced that it’s increasingly difficult to notice the difference in quality between new inventions, simply because we might be reaching the limits of the human senses.

Photographer Josh Rossi, who also goes by the moniker Photoshop Dad, recently compared the new iPhone 11 Pro to his Fuji GFX 100 medium format camera, which costs around 13,000 dollars. Now, the winner should be obvious, theoretically, but the reality is different than you’d expect. Dear Pandas, scroll down and try to figure out which pictures were taken with the iPhone and which ones were taken with the extremely expensive professional camera. And be sure to scroll down for Bored Panda’s interview with Rossi as well.

More info: JoshRossi.co | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | Twitter

You can watch Josh Rossi’s full comparison video right here

Bored Panda interviewed the photographer Rossi to hear more of his thoughts on the subject. Here’s what he had to say: “he iPhone camera has gone so far since 2007. I’ve always wanted to shoot professional work since the iPhone 4 came out but the technology didn’t allow it. Finally, the iPhone camera is to a place where you can barely tell if it was shot on a DSLR or not.”

“At this point, only the trained eye can tell the difference between a pro-level camera and the iPhone. The consequence is that anyone can now create stunning images,” Rossi said.

“I was inspired to become a photographer to create bigger stories that evoke emotion. I always loved storytelling but didn’t want to go into film because I wanted to have control over the whole creative process and didn’t want to have to spend millions of dollars just to tell a story,” he revealed to Bored Panda. “Photography is a very inexpensive way of creating emotion through storytelling.

The photographer took pictures with the iPhone 11 Pro…

…as well as with the Fuji GFX 100 camera that costs around 13,000 dollars

Can you guess which photos were taken with the iPhone and which ones were taken with one of the best professional cameras on the market today? Scroll down for the answers

According to Rossi, the Fujifilm GFX 100 is “one of the best cameras out there today,” while its sensor size is a third of the entire iPhone 11. Rossi admitted that he was expecting the professional camera to win by a knock-out, however, the iPhone 11 Pro gave a hell of a fight.

“I think that the image quality of the iPhone is good enough to print on a billboard, post on social media and even use on big campaigns,” Rossi concluded, which just goes to show how far Apple has come when it comes to camera hardware and system software development since the release of the first iPhone back in 2007.

Have you decided what your answers are? Are you sure? Great! Check to see which ones you got correct

The iPhone 11 Pro can cost anywhere from 599 dollars to over 1,349 dollars, depending on various parameters, such as whether you have an iPhone to trade in, what memory capacity you choose (64 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB), and who your carrier is. Obviously, if you choose the iPhone 11 Pro Max (isn’t that name kind of redundant?), you’ll end up paying way more.

iPhone 11 Pro + Photoshop = a movie poster

Now, full disclaimer, I’ve personally never owned an iPhone (I prefer communicating via smoke signals), but I do like the design of some of Apple’s products. For example, while everyone else and their grandma listens to music on their phones, I still use an 80 GB iPod Classic from way back: it’s best features are that it does the job it’s meant to do and I haven’t had to replace it yet. Apple-willing, it’ll last until I’m old and fabulously gray.

So, dear Readers, if any of you own an iPhone (11 Pro or any other model), let us know in the comments what you think of the picture quality. And if any of you Pandas out there are professional photographers, drop us a line or two about what you think of Rossi’s comparison.

Here’s how people reacted to the comparison

Ugh. Didn't we have the exact same thing about a week ago? Also, sure thing you can tune your DSLR so the pics mimic those of the iCrap. Try it the other way round.

Yeah. If I was supposed to test something, I'd push the limits. What about different lighting conditions, different colors (dunno but my digital camera from over a decade ago had some difficulty with certain shades of red), the whole range from macro to landscape, zoom (phone cameras only have digital zoom, right, so if you zoom the picture gets smaller?), and so on...? Selfies and pictures of food seem to be among the most popular pictures to make with a phone camera - so year, they should be pretty good by now with portraits and moderate close-ups. Now go for some motives and conditions that make people go and get an expensive camera...

It shows that equipment doesn't make a great photographer and that expensive setups do not guarantee great pictures. It's knowing how to use it and these are not great pictures.

If you conduct this test in perfect lighting conditions and with subjects that have been used to heavily optimize the automatic postprocessing, and if you do not know your equipment well enough to find some of the many situations where you start to see different results, you should ask yourself whether you are really that good of a photographer.

Advert, and yes on basic settings you can have any expensive camera dumb down to the specs of a phone, however a proper DSLR is capable of a hell of a lot more than any phone. Set up the camera properly and then do a comparison.

Android phones have been consistently better and higher quality that Iphones. In fact the Samsung Galaxy S10 usually rates much higher and costs less than an Iphone. Why didn't the author even try?

Rather than buy into the comparisons here, why not simply how to take a good picture with an actual camera so that you don't need photoshop at all?

As an ex photo lab manager, and still currently printing, this is as some say, BS. I get iPhone, and other phone images all the time, and people are so disappointed when I tell them their photo looks like do do when enlarged. Usually, over compressed, chromatic aberrations, over sharpened, etc. 8x10's no problem. But, no discussion on color purity, white balance, focus and other important items, no lines per millimeter test, etc. You cannot tell me that a $1,000 phone is gonna match up to my $4000 lens. True, I wish cameras could use third-party stuff as well as software updates.

Phone camera (any flagship Samsung Apple xiaomi, whatever) are good enough for normal people who want a picture of their drunk friend. Definitely not for professionals. These would look like s**t if actually used at real size and not on 72 ppi for web

I think all of the above (in story) comments are hilarious. I have had apple for years and even before the 11 pro I have blown up my pics I've taken and they come out just as good as my Nikon. Obviously I would choose my Nikon when doing a photography job BUT when I'm taking pics of the kiddos on vacation etc, it's fine. I just got the 11 pro this morning and took a couple test shots before going to work. Literally just looked at hubby and said smile, then went outside and tried the new zoom. I was impressed and it only took me seconds. I can't wait to mess with it when I have actual time. This pic was taken with the apple xs that I took of my daughter as she was getting ready for her senior pics. So I still think it's pretty decent. And I didn't have to do any editing.
