This week, American actor Johnny Depp lost a libel suit he filed in London, suing the newspaper The Sun for calling him a "wife beater" in one of their articles, a reference to his relationship with ex-wife Amber Heard. The case was ugly, dragging both actors' private lives into the spotlight. It was complicated, too; each accused the other of abuse.
British libel law works differently from the American version. In the US, the burden of proof for libel is on the person claiming to have been libeled — that is, the plaintiff has to demonstrate that what was written is false (at least in cases involving matters of public concern). In the UK, the burden of proof is on the party accused of libel — that is, The Sun had to prove that the things published about Depp were true. A judge held that 12 of 14 of Heard's accusations of abuse met the threshold for truth in civil court. Depp's attorneys say they plan to appeal. (Depp is also suing Heard for defamation in a U.S. court after she published an op-ed in The Washington Post identifying herself as a survivor of sexual and physical violence.)
On the Internet, it seems that Johnny Depp has a lot of people by his side. Twitter, Reddit, and other platforms are being flooded with memes, supporting the actor. There are, however, those who disagree with them.

I worked with Johnny on Jumpstreet and while I know people change, I can speak to his character at the time. A very kind, funny and warm human being. He had gone through a break up that basically looked like this: He was paying the rent on an apartment that his GF was living in LA while shooting in Vancouver. The whole time, she had been cheating on him. He was devastated. He had a few relationships where he ended up on the losing side. So while we may never know what happened, my money is on JD being a good guy.

My brother's first wife, or as I call her, Satan, is a sociopathic narcissist that makes Heard look tame. I got a call one day from my bro telling me Satan had thrown a cooking pot at him, and he thought his nose was broken, and that she grabbed all the kids and took off. I took him to the ER, I called the police and I waited while he made his statement agreeing to press charges for assault. The things she put those kids thru are beyond imagining, but he finally took my advice. We offered her a lump sum to sign over custody, I cashed out my 401k and she took the money and never looked back.
How did he not see this woman coming from miles away? She's like the gold-digger straight out of central casting. Cosy up, get you to dump the wife, travel, divorce. Did he not see this a 100 times in Hollywood. I bet Vanessa knew better. There would be a kind of karmic justice in that. Just another tawdry mid-life crisis. The only two people who really, really know what happened are Amber and Johnny. Hopefully they will both get over this and move on.
I find it interesting that this Justice found that there was no reason not to believe Amber Heard bc she "supposedly" donated her $8 Million Dollar Settlement from Depp to "a charity". I wonder were those papers verified from The US and were they produced by Heard? Her former Manager said she spent a great deal of money after her divorce. Amber was also known to be very aggressive and confrontational. Ms. Paradis and a former girlfriend from some 20 something yrs ago even testified here that Johnny was simply not this abusive type of person. Amber Heard thought Johnny Depp could advance her Career and she could be the CENTER OF ATTENTION so when she got jealous...the real bish came out. Now, she has cast a shadow on TRUE VICTIMS. SMDH.

Heard testified under oath at a deposition, but she withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order and a settlement was reached. According to People, Heard received $7 million from the divorce but donated it to charity. She also canceled her spousal support request of $50,000 a month.
"Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain," Depp and Heard said in a then-released joint statement. "There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm." Their divorce was finalized a year after Heard filed.
The Hollywood Reporter said that a non-disparagement clause was inserted into the settlement that prevented either party from saying anything negative about the high-profile relationship and break-up.
In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post saying she was abused but Depp was not mentioned by name.
In 2019, Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation over the article. The suit said that Heard "is not a victim of domestic abuse, she is a perpetrator," and denied that Depp ever abused her. Instead, the suit said that Heard's allegations were part of an "elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity" for the actress.
"The op-ed depended on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her," Depp's lawyers said.
In a court filing that attempted to dismiss Depp's defamation suit, Heard recalled multiple instances of alleged abuse that she said occurred during their marriage and referred to him as "the Monster."

The problem is that the judge who called Depp a wifebeater ignored the fact that Depp never was trailed or even convicted of domestic violence or assaulting Amber Heard. Instead he based his verdict on allegations that weren't proven at all. On the other hand there's more than enough evidence that Amber heard was the offensive and abusive party in the relationship. And this is why men don't speak out about domestic violence. Amber Heard's actions almost mirror an ex-girlfriend of mine who used to physically attack me and then lie that the bruises she gave herself were down to me. My friends had seen her attack me and had had to physically remove/restrain her from me on occasion, but her friends and family all bought it. I left that relationship after my ribs were broken by her father (she'd previously broken my nose), no one believes that a 6'2" man can be beaten up by 5'6" woman but it happens, because men are taught not to hit women so all you can do is restrain them (which is generally how they get bruises to blame on you).

Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. My uncle is proof of this. He has been stabbed twice by his crazy wife. She also set a house on fire while my uncle and aunt were in it. My cousin was also a victim of domestic violence. He was dragged by a car by his ex girlfriend. Johnny Depp is a good guy and I don't think that he would ever hurt a woman.

Oh come on this is rubbish and the thing is we will never know all the facts. Making your assumptions based on internet and tabloids is rubbish. Looking at them together was cringeworthy enough, both are toxic. Both have abused substances and most probably each other. That is disgusting and sad. I am afraid that I will be looking Depp’s movies differently which is also sad because it was a big part of growing up loving Edward Scissorhands etc. Both of them have a bad rep from now on, but we all know that will pass, especially in Depp’s case because apparently women supporting women is so last season. Let me say one thing. As a man who has been emotionally and mentally abused for 13 years, abuse knows no bounds. It's a means of controlling a person through some form of power over them, whether it's physical, emotional, financial, sexual, etc. You don't have to be rich or poor, or live in a certain country. It can happen to anyone, and it can sneak up on you. I didn't even realize it was happening until I was suicidal. The hardest thing to do is getting someone to listen, because so much energy is spent telling yourself the abuse "really is that bad" when you want to deny that fact. It's an exhausting thing, and it's terrifying to think about the future without them, especially when there are kids involved.

In England, the court assumes the person being sued for libel (The Sun) is lying and they have to prove they were telling the truth. You have to have evidence back up what your printed or you lose. On 12 counts, there was evidence he is abusive. Whether she beat him as well (overwhelming evidence) was not on trial, only his actions. Its like being busted for leaving your kids in a locked car in the heat and saying its ok because your wife did too. You are still a douche who risked the health of someone you claimed to love. Also, him losing his job and not her is about money, not hypocrisy. Neither was fired while it was mere accusations It was only after a court ruled he was abusive that he lost his job - the court ruling means Depp broke a moral clause in the contract. No it wasn't. He started losing work as soon as she accused him. The whole reason he went to court was that his name was being dragged through the dirt. He provided ample evidence that she was lying about the abuse (read the court documents) the judge ignored most of it and Nicols' main argument was that she wasn't a golddigger because she gave away the divorce money. He dismissed Johnny's claims that he was set up by her from the start on the back of this. Well, it turns out she has not given away the divorce money at all, she kept it. It was just more of her lies. Johnny has appealed and I hope he wins this time.

Having given up job because of an abusive (female) manager i can understand how Johnny feels. In my case the woman could no longer hide without me and was sacked six weeks later. Vanessa Paradis lived with Jonn Depp and had children with him. She's a well know actress and singer in the French speaking parts of the world. Mme Paradis stood by her ex companion and said he never hit her or anybody else. Unfortunately her testimony was not taken into account. What kind of strange Justice system has the UK that doesn't believe the evidences and the people who testified for M Depp. GB is a very strange country with a weird justice that penalizes the victim. I truly hope that he can get another court judgement that will fair.
Vanessa only gave evidence that Johnny did not abuse her that does not mean that he did not hit Amber, the courts could do little with that information. We now know that Amber is the one that was abusive but that's only because of the tapes of her admitting that she hits him when she goes into her rages.

There is one aspect/incident of this affair that does not sit comfortably with me: why would a woman who is financially independent remain for one second with an abuser and contrive to video record his temper as he damages his kitchen? I do not know the truth of the whole, but that seems extraordinary behaviour by any stretch.

Amber Heard's actions almost mirror an ex-girlfriend of mine who used to physically attack me and then lie that the bruises she gave herself were down to me. My friends had seen her attack me and had had to physically remove/restrain her from me on occasion, but her friends and family all bought it. I left that relationship after my ribs were broken by her father (she'd previously broken my nose), no one believes that a 6'2" man can be beaten up by 5'6" woman but it happens, because men are taught not to hit women so all you can do is restrain them (which is generally how they get bruises to blame on you).

I don't think it was ever really their choice to have it on open display, they are celebrities so it was kind of beyond their control and it opens up some discussions around abuse. It's a means of controlling a person through some form of power over them, whether it's physical, emotional, financial, sexual, etc. You don't have to be rich or poor, or live in a certain country. It can happen to anyone, and it can sneak up on you. I didn't even realize it was happening until I was suicidal. The hardest thing to do is getting someone to listen, because so much energy is spent telling yourself the abuse "really is that bad" when you want to deny that fact. No it wasn't. He started losing work as soon as she accused him. The whole reason he went to court was that his name was being dragged through the dirt. He provided ample evidence that she was lying about the abuse (read the court documents) the judge ignored most of it and Nicols' main argument was that she wasn't a golddigger because she gave away the divorce money. He dismissed Johnny's claims that he was set up by her from the start on the back of this. Well, it turns out she has not given away the divorce money at all, she kept it. It was just more of her lies. Johnny has appealed and I hope he wins this time.

Having given up job because of an abusive (female) manager i can understand how Johnny feels. In my case the woman could no longer hide without me and was sacked six weeks later. Mme Paradis stood by her ex companion and said he never hit her or anybody else. Unfortunately her testimony was not taken into account.
