The world is celebrating International Women's Day. So you know what that means. Lithuanian police officers are probably giving tulips to female drivers again. But an online feminist community called the School of Feminism has suggested another cool way to commemorate the occasion.
Posters. The organization uploaded a series of designs to the internet, listing some of the biggest achievements that societies' have earned in their quest towards equality. "Thanks to feminists, women can vote, work, abort [their pregnancies], divorce [spouses], wear pants, read any book [they like], use birth control, take out a loan..." Anyone who wants to use the posters can download and print out the designs or simply share them online.
"There are still many rights to fight for to achieve real equality between women and men around the world," School of Feminism concluded. "Let's keep up the fight."

Thank you to the pioneer women who pushed for the rights of women. I proudly stand as a woman knowing I have these rights because of them and their suffrage to get us where we are today
"There are many things [women can] thank feminism for," School of Feminism told Bored Panda. "From being able to vote to wearing pants, these are just a few obvious things that we do not consider on a day to day basis and that is why our simple and clear message has been so viral. But despite of all our achievements, we continue to live in a tremendously macho and unequal society. Do not forget that there still are many rights to fight for to achieve real equality throughout the world."
"Everyone has the potential to make a change in the world," they said. "When we released this series, we didn’t expect such a huge reaction because we didn’t have a community to share the project with." However, people in the internet found it despite the low like count on School of Feminism's social media pages. "We published the images on our personal accounts and they began to spread quickly."
In one week School of Feminism’s Instagram account has grown from 0 to 13k followers and their Facebook page has reached 21k, and the numbers keep climbing.
"We are receiving messages from all around the world, including Spain, Portugal, Mexico, France, Italy, Chile, Poland, Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, thanking us thanks and asking us to translate the posters into their native languages."
"We’ve ignited a worldwide conversation about feminism, and people are actively commenting and sharing their points of view thought direct messages and comments. To us, this is a great achievement because there still are people who do not understand that Feminism, as Angela Davis said, 'is the radical idea that women are human beings.'"
"We firmly believe that through [active] communication we can translate the concepts of Feminism into something so simple, everyone will be able to understand and embrace it."
For this, I cannot thank them enough! Pants (jeans in particular) are pretty much my only type of bottom-wear all year round =)
Now that we are comfortable with pants, on to pockets! Lots of pockets on women's clothes!
Where I used to work, they just recently abolished a company policy where women had to wear skirts and pantyhose...... in California, for a utility company........
and restaurants where women are still forced to wear skirts and high heels
Load More Replies...Seriously. I thank feminists. If every woman did what they were told to do by men back then (which would be very stupid), we'd be dressed in ugly, frilly petticoats. Bleck!
My comment vanished - again. Women's clothing restrictions were one big thing holding them back from anything requiring much physical effort - other than those working the fields or factories. These social fashions were upheld as much by disapproving women as by men. Once freed from long skirts/corsets etc a new generation of women were able to do so much more.
Load More Replies...I can remember having to go to school in -40 temperatures in a dress because "ladylike!". My mother insisted that my "polar" tights were just as warm as the flannel lined cords my brothers got to wear. So why did I have chilblains all over my legs, mom?
Land's end now makes tights that are like polar fleece on the inside that look like regular tights. They are AWESOME, super warm, and they fit better under your jeans than long underwear when it's really cold.
Load More Replies...I remember only having the option to wear tights under my skirt or dress when in gradeschool. Gitls wete not allowed to wear pants no matter what the weather. Warm legs were only for boys.
They had dress codes for girls in the 60's and 70's when I was in school. I remember getting a nice pants set for my 10th birthday, and was told I couldn't wear it to school.
Load More Replies...When I was a kid in the 60s, you could not wear pants to school, to church, or at some restaurants.
My aunt was turned away in -50 weather for coming to school in pants (it was the 50s)
Load More Replies...Its crazy how quickly forgets about this kind of social changes. When my granmas were young (30s-40s) women were allowed in Spain to wear trousers but the big majority still couldnt because of social preasure. Like men with 'femenine' clothes nowadays.
Hi, Ozacoter. "Like men with 'femenine' clothes nowadays." What an eye-opening statement. You are absolutely right.
Load More Replies...And bigger pockets! I can't fit my phone in the pocket of most of my jeans
Load More Replies...I never understood the reasoning behind pants as less modest when you take in accidental exposure potential. But I'm biased, burned in my memory is an experience involving a slippery path, a short skirt and unfortunately chosen vivid green and white striped underwear in front of a rather large audience.
As a male, I really long for the day I can wear skirts/dresses openly in public without being laughed at everywhere. I think there's just so much more freedom in expression if men were allowed more fashion choices.
In Ancient Rome pants was considered to be worn by savages until only the closest guards for the higher ups were required to wear pants, but women still wore pants in a lot of other cultures, in modern times when the wars started and many men went to war, the women had to take their jobs and was thus required to wear the same uniforms as the men, aka pants. The "feminist" in question was Lady Mary Wortley Montagu that started the trend of pants for women, BUT, thats because she saw them on Turkish women, so the Turkish women already wore pants without a feminist being involved. So I do not agree with this one.
Now if we could only have functional pockets and not those shallow ones you can't put anything in…
Being a Child of the 60's I remember being a rebel and wearing pants to school! It was a big thing. My older sister looked down her nose at me for not wearing a skirt and stockings.
And yet, young women were not allowed to wear pants to school until 1971. I personally wore pants to school and created a “sit-in” protest at my high school. It was cold and we had to wear our dresses and skirts and freeze while the boys were nice and warm on their long pants. I was done with that! My protest worked. It took about 2 months.
In the 60s and early 70s, girls could not wear pants to school, even when it was below freezing. In 71-72, we were allowed to wear "pant suits," but not jeans or slacks.
Personally, I prefer skirts and dresses. I feel more comfortable in them. I actually hate wearing Jeans and I also hated being called anti-feminist when I did not wear them as a teenager. But I think it is right that women can wear trousers if they want. I thank feminists for this freedom - and I also want them to respect my freedom to wear skirts.
right on. I haven't worn a skirt in 3 months and I can't even remember the last time I wore a dress.
This is so important to me--skirts and dresses are okay for special occasions, but pants are so much more sensible to wear for daily life! Especially in the winter! If I have to be constantly coping with uncomfortable clothing, I get cranky. When I'm comfortable and can concentrate on getting things done, I am so much happier!
A bummer: who should men thank because they're NOT allowed to wear dresses, put make-up, jewelry, wear certain colours like pink...without getting heavily discrimated???
I cannot wear skirts... my legs are skinny and fat and hairy and just gross sobtjamk god I can wear jeans
Some background info on the use of trousers through the centuries: https://kingandallen.co.uk/journal/2016/a-brief-history-of-trousers/
Khm... In some nations it was and is common to wear pants for men and women waaaay before feminism was a thing. Just a few examples are Turkish people, or just think about Jasmine from Aladin. Or the Huns. Women wear baggy pants for practical reasons like riding a horse. It has nothing to do with feminism.
It does in the West though. Western countries needed feminism to get to the point that those other groups were already at.
Load More Replies...Another lie. Wealthy, privileged women might have worn pants to be shocking, but it wasn't until well into the 20th century that women wore pants in public on a regular basis.
Load More Replies...After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day on February 28, 1909, in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference suggested that Women's Day be held annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. Then, socialist movements and communist countries began celebrating that day until it was officially adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
Have survived several marriages to men who demanded to have total control over every penny, and wanted to fight if I wanted to buy something with my own money. They are no longer a part of my life.
In a lot of tribes is was the women who hunted and women who were warriors too. Women's role in society as a worker has changed over the years for many reasons. Women went to work during war, because the men were not there to do it. Queen Elizabeth was a Mechanic during WWII.
The official theme for International Women's Day 2019 is: 'Think equal, build smart, innovate for change.' "At a time when innovation is dominant, shaping and changing the way people live in every part of the world, we have to be intentional about its use to positively impact the lives of women and girls," UN Women stated. "That means making sure they are not only consumers of innovation, but take their place as innovators. With their engagement, both design and execution of solutions can address the unique needs of women and girls, from the creation of decent work to delivery of products, services and infrastructure for women in all walks of life. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change” puts innovation at the centre of efforts to reflect the needs and viewpoints of women and girls and to resolve barriers to public services and opportunities."
"Remoteness need no longer be an exclusion issue when mobile money technology and digital payments can deliver social benefits to even the most remote households. Lack of roads need not prevent life-saving medication from reaching patients, with smart inventions like 15-year old Nigerian Eno Ekanem’s drone to make drops to rural areas, controlled by SMS messaging."
Also thank LGBTQ+ movements, they made same sex marriage legal!! Not all women want to marry males. :)
According to the statement, women and girls must have opportunities to contribute to making real change, and help shape the policies, services and infrastructure that impact their lives. "As we have seen from recent marches for climate action in Europe and elsewhere—they are ready to do so."
Feminists is about giving women rights. The right to make a choice. It's not about picking a side on a controversial topic.
But a woman still can't walk around topless like a man can. Edit: I wasn't choosing sides, I was just pointing something out. And not because it's illegal or whatever but because women wouldn't feel safe doing so in places a man might be seen without a shirt.
I can remember my Mom asking my Dad for his credit card, as at the time woman weren't allowed to have one of their own. I remember this vividly because of what happened next. Mom took me shopping for school clothes, shoes etc. When she went to pay, the sales man asked if my Dad knows Mom had his credit card. Things escalated, It got very heated, the men were using language that was worse than rude. The manager threw up his hands and said "god save me from educated women" Then he said cash or the highway. We left. I'll never forget this. I had never seen my Mom as angry as she was that day. She behaved like the lady she was, I was so proud of her. After all these years I still get angry just thinking about it. Do thank a Feminist, thank my Mom and your Mom.
Interesting story how long ago and what country was it. I thought with credit card being quite a recent thing that they would have always been open to both sexes, eye opener.

Thank a feminist that having children is not the ultimate goal for women and you can choose your own path in life and choose not to have children!
Culture still hasn’t stopped pressuring women to reproduce and be mothers as their purpose. It’s an incomplete win.
Load More Replies...Sure, there is still much work to do, but look at how far we have come in under a century! If we keep this progress up, hopefully our future generations of women will live in a world where these issues are not relevant. Until then, all we can do is fight for our rights and our beliefs.
Hopefully there will still be a livable planet for our descendants, There is a lot of work to be done.
Load More Replies...These seem to be too focused on making women feel thankful, without any focus on why men should feel thankful too, things like: Thank a feminist that it's becoming easier and easier to hire women for positions that have previously been male dominated, it's like losing half your talent pool -- we have many talented female software engineers at my company, and despite having a culture that encourages diversity, the engineering team is still only around 10% female. Another one - thank a feminist for helping drive companies offering Paternity benefits in addition to Maternity benefits so fathers can help raise their children too. Thank a feminist for helping to teach your sons that women are equal and teaching your daughter that no career/sport/hobby is off limits to her. And there are many more reasons that everyone should thank feminists for helping to drive equality for women. There's still lots of work to be done, but things are improving.
Another good one is feminists explaining how the patriarchy also hurts men. Like yes they have more benefits but they still have downsides that end up affecting everyone. :(
Load More Replies...Sobering thought perhaps but a lot of these freedoms are not open to women in a number of countries around the world, in some gulf states a woman needs to be escorted by a male in public, abortion only became legal in Ireland last year, there's a long list of countries that a woman's testimony is only worthy half that of a man, Malala got shot by the Taliban trying to pursue an education, in parts of northern Africa a woman clitoris is removed to stop her enjoying sex, the list goes on.

for all those saying, "Thank a feminist for 1.3 million abortions each year. Sorry, but I don’t see what’s so feminist about women using hormonal birth control. Good old condoms did the trick without wreaking havoc on the endocrine system, with the added bonus of preventing STDs. The pill worked out great for men, not women.
I dream of a day when we can stop gender wars. I mean really, aren't we all humans, regardless of our gender identity? If you answered yes, then should we not all have the same rights? If you answered yes again, why isn't it so?
I believe that even early femminists were leaned on libertatian/egalitarian ideas more than anything else so most of things presented here are to be thaned for to leftists whose basic principle is equality for everyone no matter is it gender, race, ethnicity, race or anything else depraving related. Where i come from - no femminist movement existed (or if it did its role was minor and insignificant). Everything of above was a unified struggle of both genders thinking alike under the socialist umbrella, pioneers and visionaries who spotted advances of mutual struggle for general equality based on premises of Marx and Rosa Luxembourg. Modern femminists actually started behaving like those they oppose, being counterproductive. True equlity means giving up some benefits hidden under "gentlemen" and other sectors alike as well, where advantage was on the female side (at least where i live, like jobs previously reserved for women only, exclusive right to decide to abort, advantage in a child custody, alimony issues and such).
Shouldn't you really thank men for these advances? Since men had all the power and ultimately had to agree that women should be equal. But I guess that doesn't fit into the current cultural narrative.
My mother didn’t want to have choices. I tried to tell her that was a choice. That choices are a good thing. I could not understand her reasoning. Was she brainwashed? Guess that’s why I never got much education and never had a good job. Mothers, please teach your daughters they are just as good as men.
Thanks to radical political party here in Italy people can divorce and women have abortion legally and safe in an hospital instead that by more dangerous means. Unfortunately, after that, the very same party started a poll for so many subject that they made the famous proverb "Even a broken watch tells it right twice a day"
