Here’s the thing about knowledge—if our metaphorical cup is full, if we always want to prove others wrong, and if we get overly defensive whenever a factoid threatens our worldview, then we’ll only ever live in our own private echo chamber.
Sure, it’s comfy and cozy in this homogenous bubble of views, but it doesn’t help us grow and evolve as human beings much. We have to be willing to question everything. And even if we turn out to be right about something… well, there’s a lot to be said for being graceful and diplomatic with our words if we want to teach others, not just create an argument out of thin air.

Not everyone learns the way things are taught in schools. Both my kids are very visual learners and learn better when they are actually included/involved in the lesson. Theory work is a real struggle for them. If I could afford it, I would have sent both my kids to a Montessori school.

The Muslims in my town have a parade and celebrate Jesus' birthday (not Christmas) every year. Sorry if this is done everywhere and it's all Muslims I have only ever seen it in the town I live in now. It's a wonderful day where they give out food and sweets, the colours are amazing, brightens up this otherwise gloomy British town for a few hours.

The problem is not that the vets are to "blame" for the deaths of the pets BUT THE OWNERS. Because the owners do NOT take care of their pets. You would not believe some of the horror stories that the techs at my vet's have told me. Frankly, I am surprised that the vet doesn't have an animal abuse officer in the waiting room to arrest all the monsters. LIke the time they came to work, it was winter and the temp was in the 20's and they found a pregnant dog tied to one of the pillars at the front door. She couldn't even lay down. One puppy was hanging from her uterus and one puppy was frozen to the ground. I finally decided it was a good thing that I didn't work at the vet's because screaming at clients who are stupid is not a good thing.,
They also get harassed by people who rescue animals. For what, you may ask? For not wanting to do stuff for free. A lot of vet friends have had to kick activists off their clinics because of this.
I am no longer allowed, by the local Brittany Rescue group, to "rescue" or foster pups because I take them in and assume ALL MEDICAL TREATMENT COSTS. The problem is, my vet says, is that they cannot photo op those pups to raise money if I am assuming all the costs. And yes, I do still donate to them.

As a Veterinary professional, I can confirm that our working conditions are highly challenging. Euthanasia and loss of patients is hard, but dealing with rude, ungrateful and downright abusive clients is what makes this job really difficult. We can't work for free. We have bills to pay and families to feed. In saying that, we do not get paid well. Our overheads are huge. Please be kind to your local Veterinary staff - we are loosing skilled staff at alarming rates and before you know it, there will be less and less clinics available to help you and your pets.
I'm so sorry people treat you so thoughtlessly, and even cruelly. You are truly, truly the Good Guys. I'm so grateful for you. You're doing the work I would love to have done, but did not have the science skills or the lack of squeamishness to do. I admire you very much.

And despair, b/c they go into it to save lives, but unlike human doctors, their patients die pretty quickly.... and with less help to give.... is my guess.
Exactly. These people go into this business because they love animals. And a big part of their job is putting them to sleep. Which, when necessary, is a gift of course, but incredibly painful for all involved. Including the vet and staff!

Okay so if my friend does become a vet, I need to make sure she's all right as much as I can. Same for my sister.
This is so very sad & infuriating. They're in it because they love animals and to first of all see so many animals mistreated ,& ill due to not being cared for/not brought there earlier and things might have been fixable & now need to be put to sleep is more than enough to bear. But then to be attacked & threatened & publicly shamed on the internet is beyond. I just love my vet & everyone there. When my Lucy had to be put to sleep it was such an emergency that they opened early & the vet rushed from home & was there within 10 min of the call. With Mr. Charles they stayed open late so he would not have to spend his last night of life there. Vets deserve our respect and thanks. Also, Animal medications are often the same as ours. Check if it is legal where you live, but some places you can take the prescription to a human pharmacy and get it cheaper.
My dog and I took they same allergy meds and thyroid meds. RIP Max.

I had no idea! I had a vet kill my dog by putting a leg cast on too tight. It was horrible. I didn't threaten him, just refused to pay him.
They also have to put down perfectly healthy animals because the owners can't afford to keep them. That's got to be soul destroying.
I knew this- in part as well for having to administer death so many times. Also, the ratio of female to male vet deaths is greater :(
So sad. A precious job, but I imagine many sleepless nights. To lose a patient, or be forced to help it on its way, must be very traumatic.
Other more significant contributing factors are that vets are high achievers and perfectionists and don't tolerate failure well, and can lack social stimulation, given the nature of their job. The study also sited lack of support, long hours, bad outcomes, dealing with euthanasia and burnout as reasons for the high suicide rate. We Rate Dogs is currently doing an awareness campaign on this very issue.

I wish vets just gave classes to pet owners on how to prevent diseases and treat minor ailments. Most vets chose their profession because they love animals but instead they end up threating their patients the way humans are treated: like mechanical objects. Humanize both veterinary medicine and the human kind!!!!
It's not actually true. Sure, vets do kill themselves, but not at the rate that is so often quoted. Owners are often quite vicious with vets in making spurious accusations and blaming them for things they could not control, or were not at fault, or through falsehoods and lies. Vets keep very good notes these days and one owner was successfully sued for tens of thousands by a vet she made false accusations about on line. So, be nice to your vet, don't toy with their emotions for cruel amusement, because you might get sued.

I mean whenever I think of Ikea I think that their founder was a trashbean of a human, and not a nice person, and that Ikea tax evades like a mf, but most people don't know that about him/them and the consensus worldwide is that they are a company people like and they wanna get cheap stuff from. So it's hard to face that or wanna badmouth ikea. It's like Apple. They are trendy and their marketing is great so even though they practice exploitative business practices, they seem woke etc and they are popular and people want to like them. It sucks but it is what it is.
