This Group Is Dedicated To Things That Only Happen In Europe, Here Are 50 Of The Most Interesting Ones
Picture 746 million people living in 50 (+6) countries, speaking 24 (official) languages in a continent that stretches 3,930,000 sq mi. Yep, we’re talking Europe. The precious land of long history, incredible culture, countless destinations, and people, the majority of whom are bilinguals.
But in order to really get the European lifestyle and all the quirks that come with it, you have to step outside the tourist comfort zone. Luckily, there’s a whole subreddit dedicated entirely to all things European, so we can get a better glimpse of the sung “old world.”
With a whopping 2.9M members, r/Europe has a collection of some of the most interesting things that happen here. Be sure to upvote your favorite posts!

A Bridge For Wildlife To Cross The Road In Veluwe, The Netherlands
You don't really see them, when you are on the highway though...
Load More Replies...They serve multiple purposes: connecting patches of nature and allowing animals to safely travel between those patches. Their costs are just a fraction of the entire project of highway construction but it has been proven that in the long term they are very beneficial to wildlife.
We have one of these in Oklahoma (I know, shocking!!!) but it’s so gorgeous!
Cool! And We have tunnels for wildlife in Arizona ( to let those little critters slither across too)
Load More Replies...The UK really needs to jump on this, the motorways are cutting up our land and destroying the natural wildlife corridors. Can also be applied in gardens too; foxes and hedgehogs are no longer able to travel through gardens to hunt for food as we're blocking them all out with concrete posts/footings and huge fences. Create tunnels so they can wander freely!
Quite difficult to add bridges or tunnels to already built motorways, but they are being put into new road developments. The new stretch of the A*56 in Cheshire has a couple of wildlife bridges on it.
Load More Replies...Hate to break it to you but they have these in the US and Canada as well.
Yes, and in France they're nearly everywhere, too
Load More Replies...Australia also does this, we also have rope ladders across smaller roads for koala's etc...just wish that the kangaroo's would use them more, so many killed on our roads that people don’t bat an eye at seeing dead ones next to roads :*(
Maybe they aren't built to the 'roos' specification? The red deer here around had to learn that they bridges are safe, and it took quite a while for them to dare it. But in some places, the bridges were too narrow so they never went over them because it freaked them out. maybe same for kangaroos?
Load More Replies...I've been reading about these wildlife trails in various global areas, and I think this is a brilliant idea. Safety for both wildlife and motorists. And pretty cool to look at, to boot.
I love these. And I hate people who complain about "waste of money" or then make up that stupid "Do animals come before humans?"-debatery, which, first of all, is to be answered with yes, yes, other animals' behalf, like having some kind of an environment they're able to exist within, does come before humans' behalf like getting from City A to City B a few minutes quicker. When I will drive through one of these this evening (well, depends on my exact route, ...). It is up to us to avoid harm, and if avoiding harm requires a green bridge, their cost shouldn't be too relevant.
A friend of mine took a photo from the side, knowing how protective I am for our four-legged and feathered brothers and sister. This is the BEST crossing I have ever seen! Am sure it saves a lot of lives!
I'm assuming there is a very high fence along the whole interstate here. I hope !
this should be done all over the world. the planet doesnt just belong to humans
We have many of these in the Netherlands now. This one was one of the first.
I've heard that sadly, predators such as wolves, coyotes, etc are figuring put the crossings are easy targets for prey to cross and are hanging out in these areas now waiting for an easy meal.
They are going to do that here in the Quad Cities going from IL to IA with an OLD bridge vs demolishing it.
I'm all for anything we can do to help the animals coexist and thrive in an environment that we have ruined for them to be able to do just that.
Great idea except there is data that says they don’t work, there was one such bridge that had a camera installed and the number of animals seen was minuscule. It comes down to the fact that animals have no concept of what a bridge is and that it is a safer option so won’t actively search it out as a safe means to cross
I was wondering about this. Like, are the animals getting to the road and thinking hmmm, let's walk a little further down and see if there's a bridge. Beautiful thought, but I can't see how this actually works.

Shame on anyone blaming her for being 16 and pregnant. I don't know what sex-ed is like in Slovakia or how expensive condoms are, but I'm betting a child who was winning races in ballet flats doesn't have obscene amounts of money or social privilege. Cut the teen some slack.
Meanwhile, many Central and Eastern European countries hold strongly positive views of the political union. 7 in 10 or more in Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and nonmember Ukraine give the EU favorable marks, including at least 2 in 10 among these countries who say they have a very favorable view. Likewise, Sweden, Germany, Hungary, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy also hold a very positive outlook toward the EU.

According to Pew Center, views of the economy play a large role in how people generally view the European Union. According to their study, those who think their country’s economic situation is good are more likely to have a favorable opinion of the EU in most countries surveyed.
“In Sweden, for example, 81% of those who think the Swedish economy is in good shape also have a positive view of the EU; just 42% of those who think the economy is functioning poorly share that sentiment,” the study stated.

Most likely to discourage German bomber crews. It didn't protect them completely though as Dublin was bombed (accidentally). Downed aircrew (from both sides) were interned in a pretty agreeable fashion until the end of hostilities. Most (upon their personal assurance and personal guarantee that they wouldn't do a runner) were allowed out of camp - even down to the pub in the evening! How civilized!

It seems so lazy. *grumbles*
