Time flies, they say. Oh boy, it does. But it only becomes obvious when you come across something from the past. Quite often, it’s a high school pic of your 14-year-old goth self rocking that camera. That’s a friendly reminder of your cringy legacy full of hopes and dreams before reality hit.

Other times, we come by stuff that’s as old as history itself. And some specimens are weirder than others. Cocaine tablets and a syringe from a 100-year-old nursing kit? Found it. Uranium glassware that glows? Yep. An antique door that helps you find the keyhole in case you’re drunk? Got it. Please enjoy Bored Panda’s compilation of the most amusing objects brought to you from the past by a bunch of people-turned-time-travelers.

Some of us get lucky and find some quirky old pieces of history in the attic or after we move houses. That sounds like a good opportunity to make some quick cash, but there’re some things you should know before selling your item to the antique dealer.

Do some research beforehand—go on the internet to find some information, and evaluate the item’s condition. Keep in mind that in most cases, you’re likely gonna get 20 to 50 percent off the real retail price.

Sometimes, antique dealers will ask you to state a price you’d like to get. So get ready for a little bit of negotiation. Make sure the dealer is genuinely interested in what you have, and you are truly ready to part with it. If it’s a precious heirloom from your family, you'd better think twice before selling it.

Proteon Report

You've probably noticed that people use a variety of different terms like vintage, retro, or antique to refer to whatever "old" stuff they have. But these are not synonymous and, in fact, refer to very different things. A true antique, for example, is an object that’s 100 years of age or even older. Every antique item belongs to a different period—for example, Art Nouveau or Art Deco—and these may have a couple of decades separating them.

The term "vintage" usually covers older items in general. If you go “vintage shopping,” you're shopping for items that have distinctive vintage styles and usually date to anything from the '40s to '70s. Meanwhile, the term "collectible" is used for newer items that date to the '80s, '90s, and even '00s. The word “retro” refers to vintage-inspired styles and vibes and may be used for art, fashion, graphic and interior designs, and objects.

The good one. The USA was made as a secular state, but somehow that went south in 1954. Such a shame.

Well the US government is still "technically" secular. I believe they original didn't mention god in the pledge until they had conflicts with Russia and communists. It was like propaganda- they called the communists "Godless" people.

I am a Christian, but it's critical that our country remain secular. There's a reason our country was founded as a secular one. It's to protect everyone's rights. The Christian right wing has been chipping away at the founders design for decades. I refer to the right wing as puedo-Christians because their beliefs, and actions are anything but Christian. Protect America from fascism of every kind.

I am a Christian and still believe that religion and all other aspects of life need to be separate. I don't believe in forcing your beliefs on others and trying to make them think your way. I also believe that a lot of people, because it is not always separate, use religion to be horrible people and that is not right.

Got nothing to do with antique. "God" was only added in 1954, in response to commies-under-the-bed paranoia.

The phrase "under God" was added in 1954 after the Knights of Columbus lobbied Eisenhower to add religion to it. I never repeat that change when pledging allegiance because it is a lie.

I remember when it was added. I was annoyed. It didn't seem right to my young (10? 11?) that everyone in my public school should have religion. I didn't. Much to my Irish mother's horror.

I'm a barred attorney in the USA, and in law school I took a course focused on 1st Amendment, and I'm an atheist who would like for the USA to no longer be 'under God.' BUT, the history of SCOTUS' interpretation of The First Amendment's Establishment Clause turns out to be surprisingly complicated & confusing, and not nearly as secular as us atheists want it to be. e.g. SCOTUS has ruled that monotheistic prayers before sessions of Congress DON'T violate The Est. Clause. Also, Jefferson is thought to have coined the phrase 'separation of church and state', (in a letter to James Madison),. Yet as POTUS Jefferson agreed to giving fed govt. money to a group of Catholic missionaries to convert Native Americans to Catholicism (even though he was Protestant). The US has actually never clearly had Jefferson's 'high wall of separation between church and state,' (as Jefferson phrased it in that letter), but was the first major govt. to partly go in that direction.

The original Pledge was composed by Francis Bellamy who instructed that children should recite it while giving the 'Bellamy Salute'. If you look at the picture you can see why it fell out of favor during WW2. Bellamy_sa...23826a.jpg Bellamy_salute_1915-1024x578-5e8dc3523826a.jpg

Not meant as a secular state at all. . It was set up as a state that did not prescribe any particular religion. Read the Declaration, or the Preamble to the Constitution. Or any of the thousands of pages of discussions, debates, and commentaries of the Founding Fathers. They said specifically that the constitution was made for a "religious people" and was "inadequate to any other".

They didn't leave it out.The pledge of allegiance was written without the God part to begin with. They added that in the '50s at the height of the Cold war. The government used to call the commies godless. So they pushed the idea of God and religion a lot more during that time

The USA was NOT intended to be secular, such a statement proclaims profound ignorance! The founders were devout christians, but chafed from GOVERNMENT interderence in worship. They thus produced the First amendment, which precludes the GOVERNMENT from interfering with personal choices in religion, and BANS the GOVERNMENT from choosing a preferred religion! Secularization of the government is a goal of leftists who see GOD GIVEN RIGHTS, as an obstacle to their rule!

it was technically secular yes but if you research into the nature of how the states were set up it is rather obvious that it was created under a Christian ideal. Its the only way the way our government set up works but ill admit that unless you've done some research, contextual researching, reading of philosophy it is easy to miss. this is most likely very rare copy.
