The makers of the 1971 W***y Wonka and the Chocolate Factory used geese that laid golden eggs in that scene, precisely to avoid having to train the squirrels, as it was the only possibility at the time. Very glad Hollywood is moving away from using live animal performers in preference of CGI. Always been a big softie where it upsets me that animals are caged or required to perform for human amusement. Didn't sit right when I was 6, doesn't sit right now.
And most certainly it was cheaper this way :D Comparing having the same quality of both.

Does that include just his appearance fees or also the money he made due to co-owning all those properties?

I did read ages ago that Snakes On A Plane was going to be called something else and Samuel L Jackson said the film has to be called Snakes On A Plane otherwise he won't do it. Because it's about m***********g snakes on a m***********g plane.
