For many of us, cartography day in geography or history class meant a quick nap. With our eyes open, we’d dream of all the delicious stuff we were gonna eat after school, of music we’d play on the Walkman, of a message we received the other day from that cutie…

To bring back our long-lost excitement for hard pieces of data, aka maps, plans, and geographic drawings, we're gonna need to start from the very best of them. Luckily, there’s a whole online community on Reddit dedicated to the most unusual charts of geographic areas that took maps to a whole new level.

From mapping "October" in European languages to mapping an eagle’s track over a period of twenty years, these incredible examples will surely put the world into a completely new perspective.

Who knows, you may well unleash your inner cartographer and become among 1.1 million like-minded members of the maps subreddit. In that case, you may need some more cartographical goodness with 41 maps that portray lesser-known facts about America.

To find out more about this amusing Reddit community by the name r/MapP**n, Bored Panda reached out to its creator Patrick McGranaghan, who started the subreddit in 2011 while living in Taiwan.

Patrick said he has always been a map geek: “I wanted people to share those maps so that they are easy to find and discuss.”

It turns out, he works as a land surveyor in Colorado and is a devoted member of several map societies across the nation, including the North American Cartographic Information Society, Charles Close Society for the Study of Ordnance Survey Maps, and Rocky Mountain Map Society, to name just a few.

The creator said that the title r/MapP**n followed the trend on Reddit at the time when “there were a lot of subreddits with a *-porn suffix.” He explained further: “This refers to pictures of innocuous things like nature, architecture, or engineering marvels in a beautiful way. It was not meant to be sexual. The internet at the time was a lot more relaxed and using that term was funny.”

“In the years since the culture on the internet has taken a much more puritan bias and some people don't like that name,” Patrick said.

However, he assured us that “the goal of the brand has not changed, though: it's a place to share and discuss beautiful maps.”

In fact, every kind of map imaginable has been posted to this subreddit. Patrick said that linguistic maps are popular, as well as maps that re-imagine state and national borders. There are also maps of asteroids and maps of routes of famous explorers.

Yeah he was from Nazareth, and the Bible states he looked no different than the average man there. Brown skin, brown eyes, brown hair, and probably on the short side too. Those paintings of a Swedish Jesus are just stupid. 😁

Why do people here think that if these countries were mentioned in the bible it has to do with Jesus? Facts: -Jesus was born in Nazareth, which is located in northern Israel of today. The population there is mostly brown-eyed with white/dark skin. -Other countries were also mentioned in the bible with no correlation to Jesus.

Actually this is false. Bible (just the Jewish one) mentions Scythia (Western Russia), Germany as well, it says "Ibera" but here they only used spain, same with Arabia and forgetting parts of it. WHere today is Afghanistand and Pakistan is mentioned. Other parts of Europe are mentioned as well in several different books. It also mentiones vague exotic lands to the very far east, beyond India as well. Lastly Bible makes references to sub-sahara africa as well, just doesnt specify which parts. So really the only places not mentioned is the America's, and even so, some theologians in the 1500's thought it may have mentioned it as it defines a land as being to the far west beyond the Med Sea.

King David and Esau were descendants of Abraham, who’s descendants are the known as Hebrews (meaning - to traverse, crossover), later, the nation of Israel, and today Israel and Jews. Both those men are described as having ruddy (reddish) complexions. They may have been red heads too.

actually red hair as well as brown are commonly used to dscribe and draw people from that region in ancient Egypt and ancient Persia, so quite possible. Red and brown hair is still quite common in the region.

It's myths from middle east plus Roman, Greek and local influences from the country where Christianity was introduced. 25 of December as we know is Day of Sol Invictus (Apollo plus Mitra).

India is mentioned in Esther 1:1 and 8:9 as the eastern boundary of the Persian Empire under Ahasuerus (c. fifth century B.C.) and in 1 Maccabees 6:37 in a reference to the Indian mahouts of Antiochus's war elephants (second century B.C.). Otherwise there are no explicit references to India in the Old Testament. Hodu (Hebrew: הֹדּוּ‎ Hoddû) is the Biblical Hebrew name for India mentioned in the Book of Esther part of the Jewish Tanakh and Christian Old Testament. In Esther 1:1 and 8:9, Ahasuerus (Xerxes) had been described as King ruling 127 provinces from Hodu (India) to Ethiopia.

Great one. Also please keep in mind the borders have shifted quite a bit that's why there's a gap between India and Iran. If it was based on maps in those days it would be a continuous red stripe.

The gap happened only 70 years back. The India (as Alexander had seen) was a continuous area which includes modern Pakistan, Bangladesh,Afghanistan, Nepal and Tibet(as in seen in Nalanda engravings). The area guarded by Himalayas and sea. The area Europeans wanted to "discover" for a long time.

Don't ascribe modern country names to the map. You would have to go back in history to determine what country names would have occupied that space at that time. The name "India" may have first been used sometime in the 5th to 12th Centuries CE.

This poves the Bible was written by people who had no idea of the existence of most lands beyond a small area of the world. So it cannot be the word of a supreme being, but stories collected, translated, and changed by human beings over two thousand years. Indigenous Australians have been here for over 60 thousand years, but nothing below the equator gets a mention.

Of course if a person's biggest concern is what color his skin was they are probably not going to meet him. He would not have been European. Thing is there are images of him in pretty much every possibility but when most of those painting were being made they were made in by artist that were paid by men who wanted him to look that way so that's why they painted him that way

Population translocation was practiced during the many centuries that we now think of as "the times of the Bible." That is, when an area was conquered, some portion of its native population, often the teachers, scholars, leaders, influencers, were forcibly moved to a distant place, and members of another culture were moved into the conquered lands, which served to disrupt usual folkways, introduce the cultural norms of the conquerers to the conquered as well as permitting( or forcing) the conquered to learn how the other side lived. There are numerous instances cited throughout Biblical history. As far as the names of the countries, it's hard to tell, since national boundaries as we know them didn't correspond well to the lands held or claimed by the ancients. There are non-Hebrews mentioned whose places of origin don't correspond to a single modern geographical place. Example: Tzippora, daughter of Isro, a priest of Midian, married Moses. Where is that place?

Especially in a time like now, “when the pandemic prevents us from traveling, maps are a way that we can travel without leaving our home,” the map enthusiast said.
