Digging up obscure facts isn't just fun. Turns out, it's also good for our mental health. For example, experts say that playing trivia games can provide a dopamine rush much like gambling, but without the negative effects.
Even if our trivia games differ, the benefits are there. Whether we're playing Trivial Pursuit at home or attending a pub trivia night, the basic premise remains the same: we experience the thrill of providing correct answers to questions about lesser-known facts.

"You get a rush or a neuroreward signal or a dopamine burst from winning,” John Kounios, Ph.D., professor of psychology and director of the doctoral program in applied cognitive and brain sciences at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, told Healthline. “I think whenever you’re challenged with a trivia question and you happen to know it, you get a rush. It’s sort of like gambling.”
Rescued Elephants
When an elephant from a herd dies, the other elephants surround it in a circle, paying tribute. Elephants from other herds will often join if they had "met" on the trek to find water as they remember the scents of other elephants their entire lives. Having known a few elephants in my life I truly believe that they know the souls of people they love. Just my opinion. I think they felt his death and needed to honor him. There are many exceptional documentaries about elephants on PBS, Animal Planet, Blue Planet, and Nat Geo.
I saw this happen once with sheep. There is a field across the road from my house with a gap in the hedge that leads into another field. The flock of sheep usually stay in the second field as it is more away from the road. One morning I noticed there was a single sheep in the first field lying on its side. I could tell it was either very sick or dead. One by one a single sheep came over from the second field to the sick sheep and tried to revive it by gently headbutting it and bleating but to no avail. That was when I realised the sheep must be dead. He then walked slowly away back to the second field and bleated to the other sheep. Another sheep went to the dead sheep and tried his luck but when nothing happened he went back to the flock too. Two more sheep tried and when nothing happened they started bleating at each other then one by one in perfect single file they went into the first field and circled around their dead friend. They just stood there for a few minutes in silent reverence then in total silence, walked single file back into the second field. I called the farmer and told him about the sheep and what I saw the other sheep do. He told me he saw that many times and that sheep, despite their reputation of not being very bright actually are and are capable of true feelings especially towards each other. Which is why he only breeds sheep for wool and not meat. He could never have one killed knowing this.
Load More Replies...I guess they noticed a gathering of humans in a familiar area and came there too because they realized something was off. Animals can smell who you are, and they can also smell death. They must have realized what happened once they got close enough.
Load More Replies...Elephants are so much superior to Homo sapiens. And yet people are hunting them down to extinction. This is so sad in so many ways😞
Wow elephants do this this with there family. He was family to them!!!!!💞💞💞😭💞💞
elephants are wonderful animals and, in some ways, much more empathetic that people. i worked at a zoo and one of the goals for me was to work with those magnificent creatures. however, the head of the barn explained that i couldn't just start working there. i had to be introduced and they had to accept me. not to do this could be dangerous. so, i was properly introduced and, according the head keeper, they really liked me as they would often caress me with their trunks or gently pull me back so i could scratch their teeth or mouths. personally, i think they just liked the coconut scented mousse i used in my hair but those are memories i cherish.
Susanne Langer's theory, I don't know how to verify this, is elephants also do this ritual to guard sick friends from outside attack. She says they can't really understand death, but they can sense lack of engagement and movement and it kicks in their protection instincts.
I don't mean to be a buzzkill. but I found this a bit hard to believe as elephants don't have ESP as far as I know. This was reported by his son with no other collaborators or witnesses.
Please read my reply above. An elephant I hadn't seen in 7 years heard me before she saw me and started trumpeting. They knew....

Kounios said the benefits can also be similar to those of playing a video game.
However, unlike gambling and even video games, Kounios said trivia is generally not a problematic habit.
“I don’t think there are any pitfalls,” he said. “Like anything else that’s fun, it takes up time.”

A librarian from California, Sarah Kishler, loves trivia games and enjoys attending a monthly pub trivia night in which a team of librarians participate.
"Learning facts so that I can get better at trivia is definitely a passion of mine," she told Healthline. "Getting a question right is definitely very satisfying to me."

Not all hero’s wear capes. Some wear a helmet and uniform….and ride around in a big red water filled truck:)
Over the past decade or so, pub trivia nights that are popular in the United Kingdom appear to have grown in other parts of Europe and the United States.
Enthusiasts like Kishler enjoy getting to interact with people at these events, especially compared to electronic trivia games.
She has learned that doing well at these social trivia games gives her "a feeling of validation" and increases her self-esteem.

She doesn't think of herself as a competitive person but nevertheless enjoys getting a bit amped up at trivia games.

Except for the bit where the whole theory that wolves fight for supremacy in a pack and that the strongest wolf becomes the leader has already been debunked. Especially by the guy who came up with it.
“People really like to have some expertise on something and the brain is very good at focusing on things that you’re interested in,” Deborah Stokes, Ph.D., L.P.C., B.C.N., a psychologist in Virginia, who focuses on neurotherapy, also told Healthline.

Side fact: The guy that came up with idea of putting lead in petrol to stop engine knocking also came up with the early CFCs that f***s the ozone layer and later died from getting caught up in his own machinery he'd developed to help him get out of bed after becoming sick with polio... saw it on QI once :)

According to Stokes, learning large bodies of knowledge can often start with trivia. And people who are interested in trivia can be brainy, have a high IQ, and be smart on a lot of levels.
However, Kounios said that people aren’t necessarily better at trivia games just because they’re more educated.

"Some people soak up facts,” Kounios added. "Plenty of people with a lot more education may not remember what they had for breakfast yesterday morning."
"In typical people, my observation, not backed up by any research, is that their interest in trivia is confined to topics that they are generally interested in. So if a person is very interested in history, then they may either seek out history trivia, or they might just naturally pick it up in the course of learning about nontrivial aspects of history."

During the Holocaust in Greece, the entire, 275-person Jewish population of the island of Zakynthos was not deported after Mayor Loukas Karrer and Bishop Chrysostomos (1890–1958) refused Nazi orders to turn in a list of the members of the town's Jewish community for deportation to the death camps. Instead they secretly hid the town's 275 Jews in various rural villages and turned in a list that included only their own two names. The entire Jewish population survived the war.
Stokes pointed out that trying to retain information about things we're interested in can be like a good exercise for the frontal cortex as the brain ages.
"That’s the first thing to go with injury or with age if we don’t use it," she said.

Of course, it's completely understandable if all the stress and negativity sometimes drains your brain of the desire to learn and exhausts it instead.
In an earlier Bored Panda interview, Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow and the founder of the Free-Range-Kids movement, said that before we can become curious again, we have to do the hard part: get off the couch. Force yourself out the door. Why? Because beyond your four walls, things are never exactly the same. Weather, animals, people, sounds, smells, clouds—they’re all swirling about."
