Yep this is true. No one can earn a billion dollars by working, but you can earn a billion dollars by making money off of other people

The Inhumans of Late Capitalism page (not to be confused with the Humans of Late Capitalism social media accounts which is a similar but entirely different horse entirely) has over 178.6k followers, all eagerly waiting for the next juicy post making fun of our dystopian everyday lives.

As many of you have probably realized by now, capitalism is far from a perfect system. But what’s the alternative? Does one even exist? Anyone who’s ever opened up a history book knows that communism isn’t an alternative—it’s just a more brutal dystopia that resulted in the deaths of millions of people. And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

However, things might not be as grim nowadays as we think. For instance, Paul Mason writes in The Guardian that we might be entering the postcapitalist era without even noticing it. The forces driving this are information technology, the rise of the sharing economy, and new ways of working. Mason’s point of view is refreshing because he paints a bright and sunny picture of the future, instead of one where we’re all doomed and fighting global warming, zombies, and the plague on all fronts.

My organization makes arrangements with a local hotel so dining hall and snow-clearing staff can stay for free near work if severe weather (hurricane or freezing rain) is on the way. Why can't a ski resort set up a dorm or something for their staff? The tone of the note is really demoralizing and I would be looking somewhere else for a job.

Mark needs to be fired for even suggesting this. I had a boss one time that expected me to continue working after accidentally burning two of my fingers in the fry vat at McDonalds. When he tried to say "Why are you leaving? Can't you work?" I said "Chris..go stick your hand in the oil vat and tell me if you feel like working afterwards or do you feel like going to the emergency room!!" He shut up and left me alone.

My husband was once a manager for a pizza joint the owner of which insisted stay open during a hurricane. The owner wouldn't let anybody leave. My husband refused to let any of his staff deliver pizzas and did it himself. We nearly lost him that night. A tree fell on his car and he suffered a head injury. The owner still didn't shut down the store until it lost power.

The problem is that these sorts of businesses rely on the simple fact that most of their employees don't know or understand the labor laws. In the US the majority of this is illegal and they could be fined a large sum of money if not shut down as well. No one is exempt from a State of Emergency. People need to educate themselves in the labor laws for federal, state, county and city.

Explain how “the majority of this is illegal”. It even states they are exempt from emergency shutdown. I’m not attacking; I am asking.

I can understand the need to keep the resort employed. However, safety comes first. If it is too dangerous too travel and the company knows it will be too dangerous to travel, then they need to accommodate their employees with both housing and additional pay for their time.

Ugh, not for the hospital I work at. We are expected to be there even if it means coming in two days early - without pay. We must also bring our own linens and food (the rest is for patients and family/visitors only...this is understandable, though), I had to sleep in my car the last time I worked during a snowstorm - no extra rooms as the place was booked solid (my fault honestly). No critical care pay or overtime. Unfortunately that's becoming the norm now. At least I work at a hospital though, not some resort!

Pretty sure this is illegal. If you require staff during an emergency, you need to accommodate them. Often people work in hospitality out of necessity, they can't afford to quit, these arseholes know that.

Had to look up jiminy peak, thought it was Vail. People who work in resorts CANNOT generally afford to live there. Including your ski instructors, waitstaff at restaurants, hotel staff. Realize that when you spend that $200 on a lift ticket. The frontline staff, not even maintenance or housekeeping ( that’s a whole level lower) are getting enough to live a day like you do.

Yup. And these a*****e employers are telling them to essentially risk their lives by forcing them to come in to work during a potential state emergency, insisting they find some way, ANY way, to get in to work, offering them NO accommodations except probably sleeping on the f*****g floor of a big reception/dining hall, no blankets, or food while they're there, slaving away for the guests that are paying out those expensive ticket prices... This is a place I'd report for labour violations in a f*****g HEARTBEAT for SO many things. People like this make me want to PUKE.

Isn"t this a ski resort? It seems that in that case they *should* make sure all the staff arrives in case of a snowstorm that will make thousands of the guests stranded in the place.

Honestly, I understand that guests need looking after and shouldn't suddenly find themselves almost alone in a big hotel. But if there was decent management a) the staff would be invested in doing the best by the guests naturally and b) management would arrange accommodation or find ways to help staff get into work. Everyone would automatically want to work together for the same ends. This is horrible management and my heart goes out to the staff and the guests.

On the face of it, a truly heartless and brutal diktat, but when you understand that Jiminy is a skiing resort it begins to look rather ridiculous. I'm pretty sure that the staff would be well aware of the travel issues caused by snow!

Yaaa I live in Northern Canada, WE didnt get a day off from school when it was -30 -40 Celcius for School or work. The roads didnt get plowed immediately after it snowed, your under carriage would push the snow out of the way

I don't see the issue here. They have made valid points: if their guests can travel through these conditions to be there, the employees can travel through the conditions to serve the guests. It sounds like this is a ski resort ... who in their right mind expects a "snow day" off from work at a ski resort?

According to Mason, information technology has reduced the need for work, blurred the “edges between work and free time,” and “loosened the relationship between work and wages.” The amount we have to work will further diminish as automation increases. But that’ll still take a while because our way of thinking has yet to catch up with the power of robotics.

Mason also states that we’re “seeing the spontaneous rise of collaborative production: goods, services, and organizations are appearing that no longer respond to the dictates of the market and the managerial hierarchy. The biggest information product in the world—Wikipedia—is made by volunteers for free, abolishing the encyclopedia business and depriving the advertising industry of an estimated $3bn a year in revenue.”

In other words, we’re seeing various new forms of work, ownership, and businesses that will (in the long run) change our society as we know it. But whether or not it’ll be a postcapitalist society or something else entirely, we’ll find out in a few decades.
