Doctor Of Infectious Diseases Opens Up About What Scares Him The Most About Coronavirus
Health experts all around the world keep warning people that panic induced by the exaggerated fears of the coronavirus is worse than the virus itself. While thousands of people are stockpiling crazy amounts of toilet paper and hand sanitizer, the World Health Organization reassures us that even though the scenario of a pandemic has become very realistic, this would be the first pandemic in history that could be controlled.
“We need to remember that with decisive, early action, we can slow down the virus and prevent infections,” the WHO Director-General stated in his media briefing on 9 March. “Among those who are infected, most will recover,” he emphasizes.
Nonetheless, the fear is real. For this reason, medical staff and health experts are taking to social media to inform, advise, and reassure people—no, we’re not on the brink of the end of the world. We’re just faced with a new type of disease that’s spreading fast, but is still treatable—and even with a huge success rate (more than 70% of reported cases in China have recovered.) “The rule of the game is: never give up,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says.

Recently, one doctor opened up about what scares him the most about the coronavirus

“I’m a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I’ve been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis,” Abdu starts off a now-viral Facebook post. “I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis, TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria… there is little I haven’t been exposed to in my profession. And with the notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed, or downright scared.”

Abdu warns readers that the panic is more dangerous than the virus itself

Abdu, a doctor who has experience working with other types of viruses, says that he’s not afraid of COVID-19. However, “I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil,” he says. “I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19,” Abdu writes.
Almost 2 million people have shared his message and over 600k have liked it. “Thank you Abdu for the constant updates!” one man comments. “Having a doctor like yourself to put things in perspective and provide facts is super important in today’s crazy climate. Keep em’ coming!”
“Thank you for putting some factual, rational light on this!” one woman thanks the doctor who shared his thoughts on the virus. “Your advice is such a breath of fresh air!” a man from Singapore writes.
“Hoarding anything and everything from Costco and Home Depot won’t help”
In another post, shared yesterday, Abdu Sharkawy writes that “being prepared does not mean you have to be scared.” But when it comes to public events and meetings, he says that people should follow the recommendations and take the safer route. Nonetheless, there are still many unknowns about the virus, and no vaccine or specific antiviral medicine exists yet.
However, according to the doctor, being concerned isn’t equal to the extreme measures some people take. “Watching the news hourly and cringing at the numbers of cases that continue to mount won’t help. Hoarding anything and everything from Costco and Home Depot won’t help,” the specialist explains. “<…>Here’s what will help. How about making a commitment to understanding that 95% of all respiratory viruses cannot be transmitted if your hands are clean? How about sanitizing that iPhone or S10 that is likely teeming with more viruses and bacteria than your toilet bowl? How about being kind to others in your family, your schools, and work environments and trying to support one another and encourage these healthy practices rather than recoiling in isolation from one another?” Abdu points out in the passionate post.

Share on FacebookMy flatmate and his family have had to cancel a long-planned, very expensive trip because if they go they won't be allowed back in the country. I have to run an animal shelter with no paper towels or cleaning supplies at the shops. We're not fighting a virus. We're fighting mass hysteria.
This is brutally honest, we are becoming more dangerous than the virus is right now. Like Abdu says, we are stockpiling things that people such as doctors actually need.
yep, it happened in Indonesia too. lots of people are hoarding supplies, to the extent that some factory can't even supply it to many places.
Load More Replies...It's crazy. We decided to be sensible, and just make sure we have enough food to last us for two weeks if we need to self-isolate. Beyond that, we can cope with what we have on hand. Emptying the shelves just deprives the people who really need it from getting the things they should have to help them stay healthy. The best advice? Wash your damn hands!
"Olympic games cancelled... Can you even imagine?" Who cares about sporting events when there's a pandemic? Strange priority
Sports and other normal things keep people calm. We need people to be CALM. The virus isn’t the issue: it’s a cold. Mass hysteria is the real issue
Load More Replies...I mostly agree with this, but okaying huge gatherings of people in close quarters doesn't make sense. Washing hands is excellent, but not always possible when you're in a crowd. And children are likely to be careless, though COVID-19 doesn't seem to be affecting children as badly. In Seattle the virus got into a nursing home and killed a lot of people even after it was diagnosed and care was stepped up. Panic never helps any situation, but a highly contagious disease that is communicable before symptom and kills people shouldn't be dismissed. Part of the reason for that is that people will panic; it's what some people do.
I read about what lead to the nursing home deaths. It was the fact that workers who thought a patient that had it couldn't get the patient tested. Without it, nurses were still required to give care and the patient was allowed to remain there. By the time they finally diagnosed him..it was too late and several other people got it too. The responsibility of that mess should lie squarely on the shoulders of an inept administration and a lack of testing kits for the areas that are at high risk of deaths due to the virus. Priority should be given to health care providers, maternity wards, ICU wards and nursing homes. And the Health departments need to be stocked for the public.
Load More Replies...It amazes me how many stores near me are sold out of toilet paper because people think they need to buy enough to last a year. Also it's interesting how people seem to be buying more hand sanitizer than soap, which I don't get because washing your hands is so much more effective.
We've been told that you may need to quarantine yourself for two weeks, so why be surprised when shops run low on supplies. I'm not scared by panic buying or people worrying. What scares me is the people who underestimate the seriousness of this virus. I feel sorry for countries with inept leaders. Politicians that are more concerned for dollar and not the unfortunate.
I work in retail mostly specialized in tourism. My boss (elderly lady) thinks this illness is not worse than the flu and only very ill half dead people can die from it. She believes this is just hysteria. Yes, the panic and the racism are there and they are the worst. But I cannot agree with "oh this is nothing at all" mentality either...
Load More Replies...So, right now I feel like c**p. Several of the people I work with also aren't 100%. Pretty sure it started with one of their kids getting sick and now all of us are iffy. Soooo, I'm home. Have I been tested? No, because as a born and raised American I have no health insurance (if any of you are surprised by that I'd be shocked) and I can't afford to pay a c**p ton of money for them to tell me I'm sick- so I'm home. I've got bad lungs, but I've got extra inhalers. We've got pretty much everything we need at a baseline level (who are all these people who don't have regular supplies of household cleaners at home?? Do they not normally clean???) and we have 2 grocery stores that can deliver things and leave it on the porch if needed. There's literally nothing that panicking does other than raise anxiety- which can LITERALLY reduce your immune system. Panicking could literally kill you. Keep a normal supply of things for like 2 weeks- but who needs enough tp to last a year???
I'm very curious: If you don't have health insurance, how do you have inhalers? I've had asthma my whole life. I think about my insurance and access to inhalers all the time. How do you manage? I hope you get well soon.

Even if it does, a few people don't need all the loo rolls. loads of countries don't even use it, if you got diahorrea soap and water would be better anyway.
Load More Replies...No he isn't, and he's a doctor and knows more than you. Are you saying that in a few hours there is now a reason to panic buy and be selfish? If you're selfish, you're selfish, don't make excuses that it's because of this virus.
Load More Replies...I think it's wise to listen to the Centers for Disease Control and other experts who are saying that we should have enough food, etc., on hand to last a couple of weeks to a month in case there is a "don't leave home" order given should your area go into outbreak. In America, in a lot of places, there are grocery delivery/pick-up services, sure, but how confident would you be that the person doing the shopping and delivery for you wasn't incubating the illness? I'd rather be safe than sorry. Panic hoarding? NOPE. Having a proper amount of supplies on hand? Wise. (And by "proper", I mean what you would legit use for a month or so.) I find it odd that people are panic-buying hand sanitizer and not soap. Plenty of soap still on the shelves, but the #1 advice is to WASH YOUR HANDS unless you just can't get to a sink.
Funny that you say this. I talked to a retailer the other day that said sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizer and isopropyl alcohol is flying off the shelves. He said "You know what's not flying off the shelves...antibacterial hand soap." SMH...Wash your hands people. Hand Sanitizer cannot take the place of washing hands. It works in conjunction with it.

This is the post I needed to read to solidify my hopeful and calm demeanor during this time of panic. I have a trip to Ireland in less than 2 weeks for vacation and while Ireland is not severely affected like other countries, I still plan on going and enjoying my vacation. I am not sick, nor have I been sick since this virus came to light, so what is the point contributing to the hysteria?
This guy is a genius! We need world leaders to be reading this in front of cameras. No one is suggesting this isn't serious and restrictions are needed. But when the hell did mass hysteria EVER fix anything effectively?? Peoples utterly ludicrous behaviour is actually doing more harm than good. And scaring the c**p out of me as I suddenly begin to suspect that everyone else in the UK clearly practices appalling hand hygiene because for the first time in their lives they need... soap! What is wrong with these idiots? Have you never wiped your a*s or washed your hands before?!
Thank you! He should say this on every local news station in the country since they are hyping this up and freaking people out so shelves are empty in store (ridiculous) making it seem like it's the end of the world and anyone who gets it will die. The news needs to start reporting that even though, yes this a big deal, at the same time it isn't. It is treatable but to just stay on top of keeping yourself as healthy as possible.
Why the hell are people downvoting you!?!? You are literally saying what the people with 30 upvotes are saying but better and you're getting downvoted? I'll upvote you!

Is it false that they act selfishly and inconsiderately to each other and are able to fight with other just because f*****g toalet paper? Or what exactly is false in this post? And why are you asking who is this person? Do you know that little thing called Google or Facebook? It's canadian infectious diseases specialist, so I guess that his post is hundred times relevant than from your favourite tabloids chick which I assume is the thing you read according to your reaction.

Agreed! I certainly don't take it lightly but the reactions are way out of proportion. I was around when polio was active and people were a lo calmer than this. Of course we didn't have the news media telling us "we're all gonna die" 24/7. Sometimes I think they're majority stockholders in Xanax.

Yeah that 95% thing got me. If someone in the grocery store lineup turns around and coughs in your face and your mouth is closed, you absolutely still can catch the bug through any mucosal surface — eyes, mouth or nose.
Load More Replies...If hospitals didn't have stockpiles of basics such as masks then they already failed. A 4th Wuhan doctor just died and upwards of 20% of terminal are young and healthy. Best care in the world has a 1% terminal rate, average first world is 2.3%, overwhelmed health systems like Wuhan currently measure 6%. There's a lot to be scared of - but panicking always leads to something bad, possibly worse. Spread out your stockpiling to 1 day's worth each week so that supply chains can keep up. Wash your hands, avoid crowds, and prepare for eventual quarantine.
what is the intention of this comment? are you saying hospitals failed for not having a million masks that people would steal anyway or no

I'll upvote you!

where exactly do you see "misinformation"? Is it false that there is massive lack of medical requisites? Is it false that people lose their minds, panic and make everything even worse? Is it false that they act selfishly and inconsiderately to each other and are able to fight with other just because f*****g toalet paper? Or what exactly is false in this post? And why are you asking who is this person? Do you know that little thing called Google or Facebook? It's canadian infectious diseases specialist, so I guess that his post is hundred times relevant than from your favourite tabloids chick which I assume is the thing you read according to your reaction.
Load More Replies...Tell that to the doctors who are dying because people have been stealing face masks from hospitals.
Load More Replies...Finally, someone with a brain talking about this. It's about bloody time. There are so many people screaming and panicking that I want to smack every single one of them. Our local businesses are suffering for NO reason at all.
Agreed! I certainly don't take it lightly but the reactions are way out of proportion. I was around when polio was active and people were a lo calmer than this. Of course we didn't have the news media telling us "we're all gonna die" 24/7. Sometimes I think they're majority stockholders in Xanax.

How about being kind to others in your family, your schools, and work environments and trying to support one another and encourage these healthy practices rather than recoiling in isolation from one another?"
Yeah that 95% thing got me. If someone in the grocery store lineup turns around and coughs in your face and your mouth is closed, you absolutely still can catch the bug through any mucosal surface — eyes, mouth or nose.
