The internet is full of wonderful things. And while there’s heaps upon heaps of knowledge and services to be taken advantage of, it’s the social aspect that’s taking the lead.

As a technological invention, it has managed to give rise to a number of niche things and communities, including the r/InclusiveOR group on Reddit that’s dedicated to sharing moments of inclusiveness that nobody ever expected—when both things apply, despite there being a “choose just one” clause.

Yep, it’s the subreddit that finds situations “when the answer to a question is all of them”, so you’re invited to check out some of the best pictures, screencaps and memes the community has scavenged from the depths of the interwebs over the years.

No sane person ever says this. We would say the DRUNK mother beats up her daughter or the mother beats up the DRUNK daughter. It saves words, too.

Always refers to the last noun mentioned unless specified so it would be the daughter who was drunk.

It's the mother, because the subject of the sentence is the Mother, and it is in an active voice, if it where the daughter, it would be: 'A mother beats up her daughter because the daughter was drunk'

Okay, what if the sentence was “a mother beats up her son because he was drunk”. Or if it were “a father beats up his daughter because he was drunk”. Essentially the same exact sentences except that there’s now a clear distinction. They’re both perfectly acceptable sentences.

There's a smol bit of my brain that is saying the Mother was drunk, because it's the main noun in the sentence, or something like that.

Depends. How old is the daughter? If under 10, mother was drunk. If a teenager, daughter was drunk. If she's in her 20s or older, they both were.

As an ex-English teacher, I would say the answer is 'the daughter'. The clause, 'she was drunk' follows the person it is referring to. If it was the mother, it should have been written, 'A mother, who was drunk, beats up her daughter'. However, the whole sentence reads horribly. Knowing the grammar doesn't mean we know the intent of the writer. He or she could well have meant the mother, as alcohol often leads to violence. Also, the use of the present tense (beats) with the past tense (was) confuses the meaning. Does it happen on a regular basis? If it does, the sentence should be 'A mother beats up her daughter because she is always/a drunk'. If it happened only once, then it should read, 'A mother beat her daughter because she was drunk'. Aahhh, the joys of the English language.

"Beats" is in the present tense, and "was" is in the past tense. Now, a state of intoxication can only be the cause of one's violent behavior if it conicides in time with such behavior. You don't beat up someone because you were drunk at some point in time prior to that. Therefore, it is the daughter who was drunk.

Since I was trained in translation rather than language itself, my answer is "it'd *better be* the mother". We were trained to not use the same pronoun to represent two different person in the same sentence. That means "her" and "she" *would better be* talking about the same person. Since the "her" in "A mother beats up her daughter" is obviously about the mother, that means the "she" later on *would better be" the mother. I have emphasized multiple times, it's "better be". Doesn't mean the speaker actually means so.

The daughter. Her name was Drunk. The D is capitalized (then again this dude has some weird capitalizations).

The pronoun refers to the closest noun, so it's the daughter who was drunk as this sentence is written. Since most people don't know that rule, they could be confused by the sentence. Writers don't know the rule either so they could just write it wrong. But as written, it's the daughter.

This is a common misconception about the English language. Complex sentence structure like this does have rules for proper understanding, but the rules are rarely known. In the event that the dependent clause is descriptive of a noun or pronoun, then the use, or lack of use, of a comma determines the noun or pronoun to whom the dependent clause refers. In this case, due to the lack of a comma, the dependent clause refers to the immediately preceding noun or pronoun. This means that the daughter is the one who was drunk. Had a comma been placed before "because", it would have referred to the mother. The better way to state the latter, however, would be to put the dependent clause at the beginning of the sentence, where it will always refer to the subject.

Answer: Daughter is named Drunk. It's a stupid riddle. IF proper american English (ignoring capitalization of because and accepting the capitalized Drunk).

She, the pronoun would refer to the closest noun. In this case, the daughter.

"Mother" is the object, while "daughter" is the subject. "She" is the mother, thus the mother is drunk.

As of this article, not much is known about this niche community. But while it does have a very particular focus—sharing moments of inclusiveness when you’re in an “either-or” situation—it has proven to be quite a large community. Ever since the subreddit’s founding in March of 2018, the community has gained over 228,000 members.

As mentioned previously, the community’s posts include a variety of pictures, screencaps, memes and other forms of visual internet media that perfectly capture ambiguity and specificity at the same time.

In particular, when you’re given a situation where you have to choose (or assume) one of two or more options, you choose all of them in good r/InclusiveOR fashion.

Think traffic lights that show both red and green, failing and passing an exam, or “yes” to small, medium, and large fries at a McD’s.

Well iirc Skyrim doesn't have pumpkins (though there could be a mod) and tbh, if you get of your horse in Skyrim it usually finds a way of dying or getting stuck. (my horse once got stuck on top of Froki's Shack. seriously e_e )

It's set in Aghrabah, which doesn't exist. The story originally came from China and made it's way West with trading caravans, so every place imagines Aghrabah as being eastern exotic. Except maybe China.
