In Australia, one of my besties had an AVM removed from her brain a week after it was discovered. If it's urgent the wait times aren't as long but if it isn't deemed urgent or is elective then of course there are wait lists. I had breast reductions done, waited 2 years as it wasn't urgent but paid less than $170 and that was for the initial consult fee coz plastic surgeons are still private specialists so the consult at their clinic has a gap fee, the rest was covered by Medicare. I had emergency surgery the day I was having an ectopic pregnancy, paid nothing. Waited a year for permanent contraception surgery and again, not urgent and zero cost.
As I've said on this on other times, and American health care is completely free of wait times?

I’ve got COUNTLESS stories of Why it’s a failure up there! My BIL is a trauma surgeon who did med school in Canada and specialized residency in various other places. He’s got some horror stories as well from behind the scenes. He ended up taking a job in TX and was told by his mentors in Canada that he made the right call. Is USA perfect in healthcare? No. But Canada is a complete failure in it and Americans need to stop romanticizing it!

Actually its more of being SAD than FUNNY as I goes down further reading the comments. Making me realized how lucky I m in my country where only MYR1 (USD0.25) needed to be paid for a health care visit, or MYR3 (< USD1) a day if warded which includes meds, 3x meals etc. I once had a PCNL surgey to remove my kidney stones removal which cost me < MYR150 (USD36) which requires 5 days hospitalizations (pre n post surgery) that includes 3x meals daily, meds, surgery etc. All these being admitted as 3rd (general) class hospitalization which means sharing the floor n bathroom with other patients. Of course there is private hospitalization option with a (not so private since u r sharing with another patient) room n hotel styled meals, caregiver bed n meals etc but the same PCNL procedure going to cost MYR14,000 or USD3,400 which normally paid by insurance, but still u r expected to pay something out of your own pocket; All in, I m just so lucky when comparing to others as I read this. 😢
Forgot to mentioned (on top of running out of chars space)... As general rules for (down cheap, no-charge) public/govt hospital, be prepared for long waiting period n lots of returning visits in-between along with having to share your consultations floor with (literally) hundreds of others similar (urology, in my case) patients. 3rd (general) class hospitalization also means sharing your (bed) floor with 30,40 other patients openly, thus lacks of privacy - though not so bad once gotten used to. The same goes with bathroom n toilets, meaning cleanliness n hygiene is also lacking, evenmore if its an old hospital building like the one I was in that time. But now, with my wife being a govt-servant I'll be upgraded to 2nd class which means 4 to 6 beds room and shower, all FoC. BtW, as far as I knw there's no 1st class facility at public/govt hospital. Thus 2nd class is the best ones can get, except for royalties where there's a dedicated Royal ward(s) over at the state hospital....contd;

As an American kid I was fortunate enough to have traveled and spend my summers in Egypt to visit relatives there. By doing this I was able to immerse myself in a different culture and would often have lengthy layovers in other countries as well (mainly in Europe.) I haven’t traveled that far in almost 20 years and this summer, I’m taking my 12 year old daughter there for the first time with a layover long enough to explore a little bit of Zürich. After having the impression that so much of the rest of the world may default to us being “dumb Americans” (this post is a prime example,) … I am a little nervous about this upcoming trip! On a different note, it’s sad that so many Americans don’t have the opportunity to travel outside of the country… so many parts of our system are built to keep us uneducated, poor (wages, healthcare costs), and with very little time off work for travel.
Generally speaking most people don't really have a low opinion of Americans. A low opinion of the ones that posted all the crap above? Absolutely. I feel like in history class, when our country did something bad we do learn about what we did. Not only the good stories about our country. Im in the Netherlands. I don't think that American people are any more stupid than any other nationality. The problem is that they are victims of 2 centuries of indoctrination, propaganda, isolation and religious fundamentalism. They have been indoctrinated since childhood to believe that America is the world's greatest country and that as all other countries are inferior, there is no point in learning about them and that only American interests matter. It is true that in many parts of America things are improving, but in others they seem to be regressing.
Sad to say, I'm still learning history about what has happened here (American), even just from 50 years ago. Sometimes it feels as though there is a lock on information; if you don't know what you're looking for you won't find it. It's crazy and scary. Not to mention the huge push of propaganda for food, media, materialism, etc. that seriously ostracizes a person who doesn't 'buy' into it. As an American kid I was fortunate enough to have traveled and spend my summers in Egypt to visit relatives there. By doing this I was able to immerse myself in a different culture and would often have lengthy layovers in other countries as well (mainly in Europe.) I haven’t traveled that far in almost 20 years and this summer, I’m taking my 12 year old daughter there for the first time with a layover long enough to explore a little bit of Zürich. After having the impression that so much of the rest of the world may default to us being “dumb Americans” (this post is a prime example,) … I am a little nervous about this upcoming trip! On a different note, it’s sad that so many Americans don’t have the opportunity to travel outside of the country… so many parts of our system are built to keep us uneducated, poor (wages, healthcare costs), and with very little time off work for travel.
Generally speaking most people don't really have a low opinion of Americans. A low opinion of the ones that posted all the crap above? Absolutely. They are just representative of stupid people though, and they're all over the poor planet! I've met plenty of Americans - in the US, my own country and abroad and they were all lovely. I feel like in history class, when our country did something bad we do learn about what we did. Not only the good stories about our country. Im in the Netherlands. I don't think that American people are any more stupid than any other nationality. The problem is that they are victims of 2 centuries of indoctrination, propaganda, isolation and religious fundamentalism. They have been indoctrinated since childhood to believe that America is the world's greatest country and that as all other countries are inferior, there is no point in learning about them and that only American interests matter. It is true that in many parts of America things are improving, but in others they seem to be regressing.
Sad to say, I'm still learning history about what has happened here (American), even just from 50 years ago.
