Like John Oliver has already said, when the Polio shot came out, people lined up for it like it was the latest iPhone. However, despite millions of lives, different vaccines have saved so far, small groups have been – and still are – skeptical about why vaccines are important. For example, one anti-vaxxer has posted a picture on Tumblr why they believe people should ‘re-think the pros of vaccines,’ and it infuriated one immunologist so much, he took the time to craft the best comeback to it.
Despite calling the author of the image (and those who share the same anti-vaccination views) “the worst” people, he also thoroughly explained why. There are going to be some very pissed off unvaccinated adults in years to come who won’t realize they are still vulnerable to many childhood disease, and when they catch them in adulthood it’s a whole new game. For example chicken pox in adulthood is much more severe and can cause deformities to unborn children and Small pox scars leave adult sufferers much more horribly scarred than children. Do people realize that just because you have been vaccinated does not mean you will not develop the disease? It is mostly to decrease the effects. You can get chicken pox more than once, shingles, with different forms of measles and other diseases if exposed to them.

IKR! When I was little I had neighbors who were anti-vaccination and when my mum got the flu shot they told me and my little sister (7 and 4 yrs old) that she was going to die! My sister and I cried for an hour before our older sister yelled at them

Just tell them to avoid dangerously sounding, but essential to live chemicals like Dihydrogen Monoxide. They might get mad at you, but to everyone else they've been ridiculed and that'll eventually be enough to shove that movement back into the realm of all the other conspiracy theories. The only reason it keeps on going, is because there's a lot of attention hungry people out there who jump on to anything that can give them that attention, no matter whether it is negative or positive attention. They want it and the Antivaxxer movement is a treasure throve for them. So if we can find a way to make them ridicule themselves over and over again, then people will soon stop to listen to them and push them back into that crazy corner :)

Actually, vaccinations today are not what they were then, and there are A LOT more of them. I am the mother of an autistic 17 year old. If you want to know ALL aspects of the issue, you SHOULD watched VAXXED. In any event, children must be vaccinated, they just need to be vaccinated over a bit longer of period of time, so that their bodies dont get walloped with a massive amount all at once. they should have all of their vaccinations by the time they are 3 years of age.

Oh, not for nuthin, but, all of the people losing it over the "flu vaccine" and the kids that have died of the flu. In ALL reality, everyone would be far better served to take a garlic supplement high in Allicin. Allicin has been PROVEN in many countries research, over many decades to kill all bacterial, viral and fungal infections. I only know this because I was diagnosed with MRSA 3 years ago. MANY people die every year from MRSA! I would have been one of those people if I had listened to my doctors who were "following protocol". I had to, in desperation, go and find help for myself. Antibiotics were not killing the staph infection in my body anymore. If I didnt research the topic to EXHAUSTION and find allicin I would be gone about 6 months now. Doctors, medicines, vaccines. You need to slow down and realize that a great many of children in the 60s and 70s were NOT vaccinated and are still alive and well. And that nearly all the diseases supposedly gone due to vaccines are coming back due to to all the illegal alien children flooding our borders and sitting next to our children in school.

Not everybody CAN be vaccinated, some have allergies or too weak immune systems. Diseases spread. The more people have it, the more likely it is for others to catch it. The more people get vaccinated, the more protected the people who aren't vaccinated are. That's called herd immunization. Those people never got sick despite not getting their shots because everybody else around them got them, so they were never exposed to the diseases. Disease that are coming back now because people who can and should be vaccinated are choosing not to. When you don't vaccinate, you're endangering not only yourself, but also the part of the population that can't get immunized themselves.

Sure glad you got your rabies vaccination. It's one of the most deadly diseases known to man, and the vaccine is highly effective, so sure glad you got yours. Ditto for small pox. It's killed literally millions, and the vaccine is very effective. Sure glad you got yours. Cholera, too. Millions have died. True, the vaccine isn't more than 20% effective, but then the flu vaccine is admittedly only 10% effective, even by those who espouse it, and death rates from the flu are far lower than for untreated cholera, so, yeh, good thing you got your vaccine also. I have traveled to parts of the world without access to vaccines, and seen the results of those who SURVIVE these diseases. The lucky ones have physical impairments left over from their infection (polio, for example), but no brain damage. The unlucky ones have brain damage from fever or other aspects of the virus. Vaccinate.

It's not that simple of a comparison. Margarine is like plastic, your body can't digest it properly. It is the number one cause of diabetes and obesity, it is in everything. You really shouldn't eat it.

Trans fats do contribute to diabetes and obesity but you would need to eat a shit ton of margarine to make it an actual issue and trans fats alone do not cause obesity. Cold pressed vegetable oil is ok. It's the process of homogenization that alters the fat molecule chains so they are practically undigestable - otherwise known as trans fats. It has been widely known for over a decade that trans fats are the leading cause of diabetes and obesity. Margarine is an even denser form of these altered chains, so even more harmful. You really shouldn't eat homogenised vegetable oil either. It is next to impossible to find any pre packaged food without margarine or homogenised vegetable oil - hense the diabetes & obesity epidemic. Now they have something called "trans fats free" margarine, but that is quite new, and yet another laboratory concoction that simply has not undergone hardly any scientific studies. If you want charts and all, there has been so much research on the topic over the past decade it's literally at your finger tips.
p.s. Homogenisation is a process where extreme heat and pressure is applied to the oil to make it's shelf-life practically eternal - for increased profits, of course. So yes, it turns it into something very close to plastic. Particularly when you add sugar (the ingredients in most pre-packaged food), the combination is a deadly over time.

We're losing herd immunity because of these morons. Thankfully, many doctors are refusing to permit unvaccinated children in their waiting rooms. My doctor recently retired, he would not treat anyone who failed to disclose what vaccinations their kids had or refused to vaccinate. His practice consisted of all age groups, including elderly people and some very young children - too young for full vaccinations. ... Lots of people whined, but he held that line.

My dad told me of finding his little brother dead from polio when he was a boy. This was a common thing in all families back in those days. We are so fortunate today to have vaccines.

I am Canadian. That is not true. Vaccines are not mandated in Canada. Every parent can refuse. It's against the Canadian constitution to mandate vaccines.

Not just their kids - others as well. My sister in law is immuno-compromised. Her immune system is so weak any attempt to vaccinate her could cause her to contract the disease or, at the very least, have massive life endangering side effects. She and the handful of people like her rely on the principle of herd immunity for protection - and antivaxers present a grave danger to her and those like her.

A friend of mine is anti-vaccine and thinks her kid would get autism of some kind and I'm here like ..... I have read biography of Louis Pasteur about a month ago - and guess what? When he was working on vaccine against rabies, he didn't need to ask anyone if he can try it on him. People took their children to him and begged him to help. Strange how it has changed, hadn't it?
I've given thousands of vaccines in my career, proudly. What kills me is parents who won't vaccinate, then the kid is 5 and needs to go to school and has to get a ton of catch up vaccines. Most public and private schools will not allow an unvaccinated child.
The problem in the US is the parents can claim "religion" and be excluded from needing their kid to be vaccinated. =/

Having cared for patients in a large oncology center, you would be surprised (or maybe not) about the number of family members that convince the patient to go to this new "doctor" that only treats with cannabis and it's a miracle cure! Only, it isn't. And sadly, the daughter of my father in law's girlfriend (who had aggressive ovarian cancer) convinced her to quit chemo and radiation in favor of cannabis only to "kill the cancer." Within four months she advanced to stage 4 and it spread to her lungs. Within 6 months she had mets through her bones and within 10 months she had mets in her brain. Within 12 months, she died. This was after wasting away, losing a lung and basically starving to death as the cancer closed her throat.
i love how cannabis just keeps getting more magical each day... here is a fact... if you are on chemo... there is a good chance cannabis can help with getting an appetite back... and not caring as much that you actually have cancer. outside of that... show me the peer reviewed paper baby!
Since Cannabis is and still will be a class I narcotic on the level with heroin, it's next to impossible to do peer reviewed studies to compare chemo to cannabis treatment. do people die with cancer using cannabis only yes they die , do people die that choose only chemotherapy yes they are. an comparison can only be made if there are peer reviewed studies. I for one might choose cannabis treatment if chemo doesn't lower my blood count.. next to chemo but that's just my choice. even if cannabis doesn't help then at least it helps against pain and keeping my appetite and being able to sleep better. There are too many stories of people making an recovery after doctors gave up on them but i agree the body can suddenly learn how to fight cancer as well. We should peer review cannabis treatment all the pro's and con's if it doesn't work at all as you claim then that will show up and then people can learn.

My husband is an 8 year (soon to be 9 year) throat cancer survivor. His oncologist recommended that he use cannabis. Now, in no way, shape or form, did it "cure" his cancer. Modern technology did that with the use of 29 pinpoint radiation treatments. But, this is what it did do: #1: It kept him eating and it kept him from getting a feeding tube put in. As a matter of fact, they were amazed to see that throughout this ordeal, he only lost one pound. #2: It worked in conjunction to his other meds to keep him calm and help him sleep. But...and I repeat...BUT, it did not cure his cancer. It gets me so freaking angry when I see these false weed cures spread around on Facebook.
It's wonderful in reducing nausea that other meds can't touch! And helping with appetite. Those things alone can make a massive difference.
When my husband had cancer, we got much advice like that. Thankfully we knew better. Javier, they do their very best. Sometimes cancer cannot be defeated. Like with my husband. :-(

Many medical professionals are now accepting cannabis as part of treatment plans for pain, anxiety, anorexia, insomnia and many more medical issues. Many drugs come from the earth. I say if it helps the millions that use it, more studies need to be done.

When I was a kid, I can't be vaccinated several years because of the health reasons. But there was no problem with this because the others were vaccinated and did not give me a single contagious disease. If everybody stopped to vaccinate their kids, we will end at the New Medieval age with a epidemies and more than 50% newborns mortality.
Bottom line vaccinate your kids or they get sick from awful diseases and may spread these diseases to those who can't get vaccinated (immune compromised, babies, etc)

I got pertussis as an adult, too. I cracked ribs coughing in my sleep. It was horrible, and it took a full month to recover. Small children die of this. The vaccine is not eternal - you need a booster about every ten years.
I didn't know that. My doctor never mentions it, but does ask if I've had a tetanus shot, flu shot, or pneumonia shot lately.
@Cindy - It's not something they think about now, but there are so many people refusing to vaccinate their kids that it's more than possible to get pertussis as an adult. It's some of the worst misery I've ever had to live through. We got the flu this Christmas - and the pertussis was worse. Ask your doctor.

The amount of people he may have infected getting on planes carrying to other parts of the country/world. That is the nightmare scenario for the WHO and CDC. I don't bother trying to change anit-vaxer's minds, they are dead-set that they are right. I just consider it Darwin at work. But it does make me furious every time I hear about a very young baby or a child with a compromised immune system getting ill because they came into contact with un-immunized children in doctor's waiting rooms. I am up too date with my shots. But I do have to question the Pharma Industry about their shots when people who get the shot, come down with the very diseases they are supposed to be protected from. It does border on the whole "Snake Oil" scams of the 20th century. The question shouldn't be if you should or shouldn't get the shot. They aren't 100% effective. It's a numbers game, and the more people are vaccinated, the higher percentage of immunity in the community, and the less chance of the disease getting in.
Since it's not 100% effective, what is actually happening is that those who get sick anyway become contagious and therefore reintroducing the disease to the population at which point the adults who don't keep up to date, the ones who will get sick despite vaccinating and the children who didn't get vaccinated all are at risk. You don't seem to understand how this works. Those who come down with the disease after being vaccinated do not get the disease from the shot. It's simply that nothing is 100%, and it's unreasonable to expect it to be. Most vaccines (barring the flu shot) are well over 90% effective. But that 3 to 5% of people that aren't 100% covered can in fact catch the disease from others. For most, however, the vaccine still provides partial protection, in that they have milder cases and are less likely to transmit to others. This isn't a "why the fuck isn't it working" as you claim. It's a "why the fuck are these idiots not getting vaccinated"? Because if the vast majority of people are vaccinated, providing herd immunity, the few that don't have full immunity from the vaccine don't end up getting the disease at any point because THERE IS NO ONE TO TRANSMIT IT TO THEM. Why the fuck SHOULD you get your medical bills covered? You didn't get sick from the vax and they never claimed 100%.

Thank you for clarifying what is in the vaccine. I am 64 years old, and a Registered nurse who looked after polio patients in Winnipeg who hadn't been able to be vaccinated. This was a long time ago. The vaccine just wasn't available for them. They lived on rocking beds to facilitate respiration and had to live in the hospital requiring total care. Feeding them was an activity that was kind of fun as the bed would rock their bodies up, enabling you to give a spoonful of food before the bed rocked them back down. Any opportunity for smiles and good humour was returned in kind. All of these patients wished they could have been vaccinated to prevent their illness. By the way, I'm a vegan and in good health.

So I read this story and another article from their local newspaper and I’ve come to the conclusion that there was no bat. Apparently the parents had 2 pit bulls that had rabies which the police think was contracted from the bat, but I think the obvious conclusion is that one of the dogs bit the kid and the parents didn’t want to get in trouble for having unvaccinated dogs or have them put down and decided to wait and see what happened to the kid. The reason you never catch anything despite not vaccinating is because everybody around you did get their shots. You never come in contact with the disease, so you never catch it yourself. Not everybody CAN get vaccinated, and they rely on that herd immunization to not get sick, the one you're also relying on. You may need to read up more on how vaccines work. There are different kinds of vaccine. There flu virus changes all the time and the vaccine can be said to be the best estimate of what to come and hence it's low effectiveness. So it's not the best vaccine to base your argument on

True, the vaccine isn't more than 20% effective, but then the flu vaccine is admittedly only 10% effective, even by those who espouse it, and death rates from the flu are far lower than for untreated cholera, so, yeh, good thing you got your vaccine also. No, you just have the good sense to weigh the risks of vaccines (which are many) against the benefits of getting the disease, and make a balanced choice. The issue of 'someone else's kid' is a red herring. As for my own kid, we all do our best and regret our errors in every field when it comes to decisions we make for them. That's the burden we face as parents. And it's our burden, not some busy-body's who thinks he knows what is best for us and ours. So advice is always appreciated, but bullying and jack-booted coercion is not.
The "risks" of vaccines are laughably minor, compared to the diseases. We vaccinate against diseases we are likely to encounter, so, yeah, veterinarians get the rabies vacc, emergency workers get cholera vacc, and those working/living w medically vulnerable people get the flu vacc. Because we're responsible adults, and we do what grownups are supposed to do.

Except that part where the risk of vaccines is provably tremendously low, whereas the risks are tremendously HIGH. 1 in 5 kids under 5 used to die of vaccine preventable diseases. The risk of severe complication from vaccine is lower than the number of kids who die every year playing high school football. Walk through an old cemetery one day. In most, there's an entire area full of tiny headstones. These are tiny babies and little kids who died of diseases that are now easily prevented. Picture a dead body under each little stone. Then picture yourself standing there while they shovel dirt over your child because you were too stupid to protect them.

Hey, anti-vaxxer here. Why? Because I'm not too keen on putting into my body what I am trying to keep out, and some of these are unnecessary (such as the flu). But, that's my choice. This might have been a good argument except for the pesky little detail that a top scientist at CDC blew the whistle that the CDC FALSIFIED their studies to ELIMINATE the evidence that in fact vaccines DO cause autism. So if you wish to ignore the fact that most of the biggest vaccine pushers like Bill Gates come from long lines of eugenicist families and openly speak about how reducing the human population is their primary objective, and you want to ignore the countless lawsuits all over the world (primarily in Africa and India) that claim vaccines have caused the sterilisation of hundreds of thousands of girls, and you want to put your blind faith and your children's lives into the hands of pharmaceutical mega corporations who have been proven to suppress different cancer treatments for profit (that being only a small percentage of their crimes), then go ahead and inject your children with whatever the all knowing, infallible government tells you.
No top scientist "blew the whistle". Brian Hooker, who's impartiality is questionable at best, misinterpreted data from a CDC study, cherry picked his information, and secretly taped conversations with William Thompson, and Andrew Wakefield and he ran with this "evidence". Except it isn''t. The CDC never falsified anything and Hooker has since retracted his study. So, the irony here is that you suggest that we're putting our blind faith into "Big Pharma" and the government boogeymen, yet you'll happily digest anything that supports your confirmation bias as truth. Even when it has been debunked or proven to have been erroneous. That's hilarious. No study anywhere has proven a link between autism and vaccinations. None.

You got everything mixed up. The William Thompson you mention, IS the CDC to scientist whistleblower. He was actually one of the 5 or 6 selected to conduct THE definitive study on whether vaccines are linked to autism. He was actually in charge of statistics. The numbers showed they were linked. All data concerning the relationship was destroyed, but Thomspon kept a copy of the original results because he COULD NOT LIVE WITH HIMSELF KNOWING WHAT HE KNEW! So risking his entire career and reputation he BLEW THE WHISTLE on CDC fraud and submitted his documentation to congress. After many attempts to silence him, apparently they have now succeeded. But you go ahead and ignore the pleas of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of parents all over the world, and keep worshipping at the altar of the CDC, big pharmaceutical corporations, and your government.
Let's say they were right. IF, big asshole IF here, vaccines did cause autism, seriously, would it even come close to excuse not vaccinating? Are you seriously, no irony, 100% trying to tell me that the possibility of being autistic is worse than that of dying a slow, agonizing death in early childhood or living with deformation and pain your whole life? Look deeply into the eyes of someone who is autistic or have an autistic child and say that to them. That their life or the life or their child is worth less than dying or suffering for life from preventable diseases.
What makes you think that a slow and painful death is 100% certain to happen from not getting any vaccines? You need to study these diseases, learn how they work and how to treat them. They aren't as deadly as you think. Besides, many children used to die from scarlet fever and no vaccine was ever developed but you don't hear anyone panicking about it. There's so many more diseases that are way more scary that don't have vaccines for them. And there's a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn't get the vaccine bc it wasn't available and I got the disease at 5 and no one was afraid I was going to die. Measles was another childhood disease that was not very deadly and they used to have measles parties like they used to have chicken pox parties. Tetanus isn't airborne and can be prevented by avoiding stepping on rusty nails, etc.
It's not about not vaccinating, I am not against vaccines, it is about having oversight and making sure the vaccines are safe. There is way too much evidence all over the planet of vaccines being harmful and this trend is relatively new (past 10-15 years) and it needs to be investigated. The problem is that now a handful of corporations make ALL the vaccines distributed all over the planet and they are so huge that no one can touch them. Doctors and scientists that speak out against them get their lives destroyed. This is a very dangerous problem. It is a problem when a handful of people decide what gets injected into the entire world population with no oversight or accountability, and when the testimonies of victims are silenced and ignored.
