Woman Illustrates Childhood ‘Friends’ Before Being Given Heavy Medication, And It Will Give You Chills
Imgur user Sierra had imaginary friends from the ages of 9-13, and is able to describe them in vivid detail. She stopped seeing them at age 14 when she was put on medication, however she misses the comfort that they provided her in dark times. “I honestly miss them and like to think they are real,” she says. “They are just waiting for me somewhere else.”
“They slept with me every night, in order for me to not fear them, but the first few times they crawled into bed with me was the scariest,” Sierra told Bored Panda. But later things changed and she grew more comfortable. “It was like having a sleepover with your best friends every day. We conversed, sang, swam, ate, enjoyed one another. It was peaceful in a way,” she reminisced fondly.

I hope some illustrator can work with her and document all these friends before they are gone. They sound too good to just be forgotten.
"Armchair psychology" here, but although these creatures sound both interesting and amazing, I can't shake the feeling that they were actually her way of coping with some sort of trauma or disease. I mean what she's describing sounds very much as if you'd mix schizophrenia and dissociative personality disorder, which in the mind of a child took the shape of mythical creatures. All of these creatures sound like the type a child would come across in stories, games, cartoons. And while the story she says is beautiful, I can't help but feel a little bit concerned about why the dark fox was suggesting she should "profit off of her body", and how they came to sleep with her at night and it was scary the first time. Our minds do very interesting things to protect us. I hope she's ok, nonetheless.
Hello. I am doing wonderful. I just want to make this very clear. I do not and never had schizophrenia. I've had a lot of doctors throughout my life and not one has come to the conclusion that I had schizophrenia, an identity disorder, or anything of the like. I was just a very depressed and anxious child and my "friends" we're there to help me cope with that. My friends never harmed me nor did they do malicious things to me. I'm much better today, I'm a normal woman with a nutty brain, but normal none the less. Thank you for your interest in my story and good day

I used to fall asleep every night and "wake up" in a different world full of things nobody else knew about. I had it all to myself and there were so many wonderful things there. My dreams helped me through depression and various other mental issues by giving me something to rely on and allowing me to retreat to a place where I inexplicably felt understood and loved in a world devoid of meaning and happiness. If not for my dreamworld, I might not even be here today, so this woman's story holds a lot of meaning to me, knowing that there's someone else out there who had the same kind of experience.

I don't know about anyone else, but the one with no name seems very similar to Ammit from Egyptian mythology to me. They certainly look similar enough (Ammit was a cross between a crocodile, a lion, and some kind of beast of burden if I remember right?), and the "place without life but life is all around" that they came from sounds like an apt description of the Duat, as well as the soul devouring powers. Not to say it *was*, but it's just interesting how similar the two are.
Agree with you Kat that Sierra's full side view drawing & wonderfully detailed description do coincide with her 1st. no name friend so akin to Ammit's appearance - he head of a crocodile, the body of a lion or a wild cat and the hindquarters of hippopotamus. Though she represented an aspect many feared, she kept the order by throwing only those hearts deemed into Duat's lake of fire. As she kept them from repeating the struggle of trying to live yet another life they couldn't defend the 2 lives that had come before. Find it amazing that Sierra experienced such things & can completely understand why she misses them. Though i believe she's fortunate to be able to recall so much of what they taught her & truly hope she never loses sight of that - whether they were real or not!

I really do love bored panda. I literally spend hours here. But I never have read something that enthralling. Actually, I don't really want to believe that they only exist in a child's head. I think the human mind is not opened enough to fully understand the differences. For instance, all the homophobic people hate LGBT community just because their love conception is way too different from theirs. But it is not that one is wrong and the other is the absolute truth. Every way of loving is true and pure and still exists, in different kinds. I think this exemple is fully related to the story we just read : if we just stick to what majority is used to see, cleary this sounds mad. But is it? In my opinion, this is as true as we want it to be. Therefore, scientists will speak of 'mental issues' while others (the ones with a wide and open mind) might understand it as entities the human world is clearly not ready to see? I don't really know, just sharing my messy thougts :)
If you guys think this is interesting, you should read the book January First. It's a (real life) father's first hand account of his young daughter's fight with schizophrenia. Absolutely heartbreaking story. All of these descriptions feel very similar to January's "friends".
I know this may sound odd. But maybe she had an ability to see an another realm like angels and demons. Then the medicine came along and closed off her mind to see such things. I have heard from other people who can see other realms that they tried to medicate themselves first because of fear. But also for not quite understanding what they see. But have it up once they understood. Just my two sense thanks for listening to me.
For me, you don't sound odd AT ALL. I was even about to ask her why they put her on heavy meds? If her "friends" were nice to her, they even teach her about wisdom in such young age, why are they took them from her life? Uh, I have so many questions!

I believe there is A LOT more out there and A LOT more than most of us can even come close to trying to explain. Some people are just better "receivers" of our universes and what it's made up of. I don't think she has mental illness, but rather an intuitiveness or wisdom that most just can't connect with. Very empowering and interesting!! :)

No name scares me idk y..... it just does... it's like I've seen it before but idk it's like it wants me dead but I swear I've never seen IT or anything like It but I'm terrified. I too usually need to take meds (but I moved and currently don't have a psychiatrist or whatever prescribes my anxiety and depression meds) (I'm only 15 guys so I can't rly force my mom to find a person to do it) so I feel that not taking the meds will make me see It in my dreams/nightmares and I'm absolutely terrified guys. One of the things I relish about the internet is that one has the chance to reads stories such as this. And one of the things that frustrates me about the internet is that I don't have the opportunity to actually meet with and converse earnestly with the people who have these stories...
It's amazing how her young mind created this intricate set of characters. She has good potential for creative writing. Part of me wants to believe these creatures really do exist though and only some like her can see them.

I think she has a very creative mind. These imaginary friends may have served to help her process confusing and frightening things about the real world in a less threatening way. Even the one that initially wanted her to do bad things seems to have let her ponder these things and decide they weren’t anything she should or had to do.
Why do some people feel the need to diagnose a woman who has stated multiple times that she is doing great? Do you people do this with friends and family who tell you about weird things they imagined or experienced as kids? If you do, then I have a diagnosis for you -- you're a lonely person who has no true friends because no one wants to be around a know-it-all that is constantly trying to fix what isn't broken.
I would love that so much. And I'd be devastated to find out that they had disappeared after the medicine. I'm devastated just reading about it. Well, I've never experienced anything like that and I feel literally jealous of people who did. Also it's heartwarming for me to hear their stories, that they could do this kind of stuff with their brains. It's absolutely amazing.
They were your protectors! I have "clairaudience" or the ability to hear into the next dimension... I could hear my husband speak to me after he had passed, and I speak with both parents from time to time... I went to see a psychic medium. She was the one who opened the door of the next dimension to me at a time when I couldn't seem to get over my grief for all who died within the period of about 2 years... all of my immediate family, sister, father and mother; my husband and my best friend. If I had owned a dog, the dog would have died also. So now, I'm looking into my huge amount of survivor guilt... sometimes i wonder if things like this are real and the medicine just reverts our mental state to normal standards where we cannot perceive other dimensions. but the scientist part of me proceeds to lead thinking these things cannot exist in our realities without bending of physics.

Thank you JillVille - as my first thought after reading just a bit was how very brave Sierra was to just be honest & open about her childhood friends. It simply blew me away just how much she'd remembered of the different & varying wisdoms of the many things these creatures all had offered to her during their time together. I think that she is special, and that these creatures may have been real. She describes many things that come from different religions both ancient and new. I wish I could reach out and suggest that she read Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls, written by a hypnotist - case studies of people who have gone into past life regression, and touched on the world in between. It probably sounds like craziness to non believers - but I believe this girl is special.
Well maybe i'm a bit odd myself but i think she was & is too! Certainly agree about the many various ancient beliefs & gods, though "the new religions" is completely lost on me. This is not the first time I have heard of someone losing a special talent or connection after being medicated. I would be interested to learn what kind of medication Sierra was given. And why.
This is an unexpected take on something I have always hoped for people trapped in a bad situation. That our Creator or someone would comfort them in ways that we will never imagine. I don't know why but just writing this is making me cry. So happy for you, Sierra. Then and now.

Our minds are so infinitely amazing, and science has yet to discover what, the brain can do, how it connects with our souls journey, and provide safety for us, in times of great need. I loved hearing your story about your friends. I kind of had something similar when I was a kid, except I had control over my friends and would create stories and lives for them to be a part of. It really helped me get through my depression and being loneliness.

I wish she wouldn't continuously apologize for her artistic skills, she has a lot of skill and should develop it. I, for one, have a hard time believing this amount of detail is purely "imaginary." For shame on our mental health services (or lack thereof) who automatically medicate and make people disbelieve themselves simply because it is something they themselves do not understand.
This is fascinating from a diagnostic standpoint. As a child, her brain worked in a different way than most others. The fact she remembers so many details is astonishing. Perhaps her story can help others, either with a diagnosis, or as a guide for unique brain activity.

My son never used to draw, never (it was boring to him), and then, out of nowhere, he started to draw like a pro (waaay better than me) and it was only some kind of creatures, with a bunch of details, very scary for me. He was around 5. He was saying that he was dreaming about them. And nothing more. Btw, he can't draw a cat. But he can draw these complicated creatures like it was nothing. I'm disturbed by the whole thing, I don't know what to think. He is very happy child, no trouble, no trauma of any kind. Do you have any ideas?

Devvera used to see me too. I don’t know why it looks so similar to my own Dev, but one of my childhood spirits, named Ixsol, still follows me. He watches everything I do, always Saigon “don’t let them see your mind, they’ll take me away.” Honestly, Ixsol scares other, but he is nice.
You don't have a mental illness you are human. Unless you are a computer, most of us talk to ourselves and have imaginary conversations with others all the time, whether it's with God or with someone we knew or wish we know. You should read Carl Jung and/or Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myths. They can help you make sense of your experience.
I think there is a lot of material that would make for a good story if ever you felt like truly sharing something so personnel, it kind of reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth or even Alice in Wonderland, I know this is your life and not just a piece of fiction but in many ways it's your story about becoming a woman and learning to deal with the world around you, I think it's got potential.

Most of which is Latin except for Dev which is sanskrit. These are clearly demons. What 9 year old knows that much latin? Look it up if you dont believe me.

Or else, all this may have been true. I have no evidence that it was, but it's possible that the extreme depression/trauma opened up a portal most other people can't or would have been too defensive to reach. We really have no idea what the extent of reality is. The Third Man Factor, has been documented by John Geiger. Many people experiencing extreme danger have suddenly felt the presence of another being who leads them to safety. Some have been in 9/11 and said this presence led them through fire and smoke and they emerged barely harmed. We want to attribute this simply to the brain doing tricks, but we don't REALLY know. Anyway, a book about this would be wonderful. I would be interested in what these beings taught Sierra and how they helped her handle her crisis. If they actually were not real that means the brain has incredible access to wisdom that we normally think only outside adults can provide. If these are not real beings that means we already know everything ourselves.

Her creatures are very male, someone was slipping into her bed and she blocked it from her reality with her creatures. This is what I see and I also see she needed protection from a quack for a Dr. not strong meds.
You know as I read this story I couldn't help but feel that these creatures that you experienced where your guides. I am a pagan and studying to learn about the other world's and spirits that live there and here you are so blessed to have meet them. I don't think there was anything wrong with you. I think you just needed guidance, how to protect yourself so it would be a choice between the both of you, without overwhelming you. As for the dark fox, she knew no bounds like we place on kids here and she was responding as if you where a soul and not a child. Again a teacher on this plain would of been helpful. Sounds to me like u were given an amazing gift and miracle. Its so sad society and the adults around you want to put u into their little box of what THEY think is right. Put u on meds because u are different from them. Because u can see the beautiful truth which they could never. The true mentally ill are tyoose who think everyone should fit into their ideas of what people should act, feel,look like etc. U were given this gift for a reason, use it!! I too usually need to take meds (but I moved and currently don't have a psychiatrist or whatever prescribes my anxiety and depression meds) (I'm only 15 guys so I can't rly force my mom to find a person to do it) so I feel that not taking the meds will make me see It in my dreams/nightmares and I'm absolutely terrified guys. It's amazing how her young mind created this intricate set of characters. She has good potential for creative writing. Part of me wants to believe these creatures really do exist though and only some like her can see them.

Load More Replies... I think she has a very creative mind. These imaginary friends may have served to help her process confusing and frightening things about the real world in a less threatening way. Even the one that initially wanted her to do bad things seems to have let her ponder these things and decide they weren’t anything she should or had to do.
Why do some people feel the need to diagnose a woman who has stated multiple times that she is doing great? Do you people do this with friends and family who tell you about weird things they imagined or experienced as kids? If you do, then I have a diagnosis for you -- you're a lonely person who has no true friends because no one wants to be around a know-it-all that is constantly trying to fix what isn't broken.
I would love that so much. And I'd be devastated to find out that they had disappeared after the medicine. I'm devastated just reading about it. Well, I've never experienced anything like that and I feel literally jealous of people who did. Also it's heartwarming for me to hear their stories, that they could do this kind of stuff with their brains. It's absolutely amazing.
They were your protectors! I have "clairaudience" or the ability to hear into the next dimension... I could hear my husband speak to me after he had passed, and I speak with both parents from time to time... I went to see a psychic medium. She was the one who opened the door of the next dimension to me at a time when I couldn't seem to get over my grief for all who died within the period of about 2 years... all of my immediate family, sister, father and mother; my husband and my best friend. If I had owned a dog, the dog would have died also. So now, I'm looking into my huge amount of survivor guilt... sometimes i wonder if things like this are real and the medicine just reverts our mental state to normal standards where we cannot perceive other dimensions. but the scientist part of me proceeds to lead thinking these things cannot exist in our realities without bending of physics.

Mine were not like yours, more like regular animals that would just speak to me. Very comforting when one is lonely. I'm glad you've grown past them and come out to share yourself with this universe. Thank you JillVille - as my first thought after reading just a bit was how very brave Sierra was to just be honest & open about her childhood friends. It simply blew me away just how much she'd remembered of the different & varying wisdoms of the many things these creatures all had offered to her during their time together. They seem far to sophisticated & abstract to simply be dismissed as childhood imagination &/or fantasy. But that's just me!

I wish I could reach out and suggest that she read Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls, written by a hypnotist - case studies of people who have gone into past life regression, and touched on the world in between. It probably sounds like craziness to non believers - but I believe this girl is special.

People always want to put a label on everything or put you in a category because you're different, but if we had that then life would not be interesting at least not to me. :)
I loved hearing your story about your friends. I kind of had something similar when I was a kid, except I had control over my friends and would create stories and lives for them to be a part of. It really helped me get through my depression and being loneliness.

I wish she wouldn't continuously apologize for her artistic skills, she has a lot of skill and should develop it. I, for one, have a hard time believing this amount of detail is purely "imaginary." For shame on our mental health services (or lack thereof) who automatically medicate and make people disbelieve themselves simply because it is something they themselves do not understand.
This is fascinating from a diagnostic standpoint. As a child, her brain worked in a different way than most others. The fact she remembers so many details is astonishing. Perhaps her story can help others, either with a diagnosis, or as a guide for unique brain activity.
Well that's disturbing, a few of these look like creatures my daughter draws, though she has never said that they are friends (imaginary or not).

My son never used to draw, never (it was boring to him), and then, out of nowhere, he started to draw like a pro (waaay better than me) and it was only some kind of creatures, with a bunch of details, very scary for me. He was around 5. He was saying that he was dreaming about them. And nothing more. Btw, he can't draw a cat. But he can draw these complicated creatures like it was nothing. I'm disturbed by the whole thing, I don't know what to think. He is very happy child, no trouble, no trauma of any kind. Do you have any ideas?

You don't have a mental illness you are human. Unless you are a computer, most of us talk to ourselves and have imaginary conversations with others all the time, whether it's with God or with someone we knew or wish we know. You should read Carl Jung and/or Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myths. They can help you make sense of your experience.
I think there is a lot of material that would make for a good story if ever you felt like truly sharing something so personnel, it kind of reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth or even Alice in Wonderland, I know this is your life and not just a piece of fiction but in many ways it's your story about becoming a woman and learning to deal with the world around you, I think it's got potential.

Most of which is Latin except for Dev which is sanskrit. These are clearly demons. What 9 year old knows that much latin? Look it up if you dont believe me.

if they are imaginary friends you must have a great imagination .. they should've come from somewhere else right? before it forms in the imagination or maybe they might be coming from the unconscious mind the part of the brain that we're not mostly using

I have no evidence that it was, but it's possible that the extreme depression/trauma opened up a portal most other people can't or would have been too defensive to reach. We really have no idea what the extent of reality is. The Third Man Factor, has been documented by John Geiger. Many people experiencing extreme danger have suddenly felt the presence of another being who leads them to safety. Some have been in 9/11 and said this presence led them through fire and smoke and they emerged barely harmed. We want to attribute this simply to the brain doing tricks, but we don't REALLY know. Anyway, a book about this would be wonderful. I would be interested in what these beings taught Sierra and how they helped her handle her crisis. If they actually were not real that means the brain has incredible access to wisdom that we normally think only outside adults can provide. If these are not real beings that means we already know everything ourselves.

Her creatures are very male, someone was slipping into her bed and she blocked it from her reality with her creatures. This is what I see and I also see she needed protection from a quack for a Dr. not strong meds.
You know as I read this story I couldn't help but feel that these creatures that you experienced where your guides. I am a pagan and studying to learn about the other world's and spirits that live there and here you are so blessed to have meet them. I don't think there was anything wrong with you. I think you just needed guidance, how to protect yourself so it would be a choice between the both of you, without overwhelming you. As for the dark fox, she knew no bounds like we place on kids here and she was responding as if you where a soul and not a child. Again a teacher on this plain would of been helpful. Sounds to me like u were given an amazing gift and miracle. Its so sad society and the adults around you want to put u into their little box of what THEY think is right. Put u on meds because u are different from them. Because u can see the beautiful truth which they could never. The true mentally ill are tyoose who think everyone should fit into their ideas of what people should act, feel,look like etc. U were given this gift for a reason, use it!! It is to make the world better and to understand our impact in the universe and how its is all intertwined. You are seeing another demention that others cannot. I wish i could!!
