Background information- I’m in year 10, I moved from Australia to Switzerland in September 2021. Right now it is Monday night, and on Thursday and Friday I had a minor head cold and had to stay home from school. For many years I’ve had a problem where after I’m sick, I have difficulty getting back to school. I get emotional, tired, and more often than not I continue to stay home. Today I stayed home after a morning where I was trying to force myself to get to school, but it felt like I was physically unable to get myself into the building. Now, I know I need to be at school, and I feel like I’m being difficult and a bad student, but I really don’t know how to get over this. Do you have any ways I can overcome this problem?

Sounds like you’re struggling with some paralyzing anxiety. Schools can be a draining place, you need to find your motivation outside your individual school. I really enjoy learning that’s all that gets me to enter a classroom as I have severe social anxiety. Maybe make a game for your self in class to distract yourself from your physical symptoms, like making up back stories for your class mates or drawing spirals in your notebook when you can’t focus of the lecture. Keep writing even if it’s not class notes. Write down how you are feeling and make fun of it. These are just a few ideas you don’t have to follow exactly it’s just what I’ve done to help myself.

Thank you, I have been trying some of these. I think the main challenge is getting through the school gates, but this really helps. Thank you for all your support, I really appreciate it.

It sounds like you have some really intense anxiety!!! It does NOT make you a bad person or a bad student!!! With the state of affairs the world is in with Covid, Russia and the Ukraine, among LOTS of other things, it’s perfectly natural to be feeling this way! See if you can find some online support for anxiety with a professional, and maybe try finding an online support group for anxiety with people in your age group. Don’t beat yourself up over this, it will just make it worse. Finding little things to help with it is the first step. As long as you keep making little tiny steps forward, you are actively trying to do something to overcome it! Just like making this post! You reached out to people, that is a HUGE big step forward!! Know that you are NOT alone in this fight AT ALL!!! So many of us are all feeling the same thing! Sending you so much love and comforting energy!
