I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News So I Illustrated The Best News Of 2018 (And Recent Years)
I'm honestly fed up with all the bad and fake news everywhere. I am not a journalist or an influencer, but I want to use my art to spread some positivity.
I wanted to create an almanac of positive as an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. That's why I want to share some of this year's positive news from around the world in the hope that it brings you some happiness and inspires you to spread some good news yourself!
Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights... we have progressed in so many categories, and it's necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we've accomplished some amazing things in 2018. So although it is hard - stay positive.

This is great. Here in Brazil, supermarkets and restaurants avoid donating food even when they actually wanted to because the food donated continues to be the donor's responsibility, so if, for example, it' poorly transported or stored and goes bad and someone eats it and gets sick, it's your store that will get in trouble even if it was fine when you donated, so they're all scared of donating.
The name of the Brewery is Saltwater Brewery. All of the rings are made out of the barley and grains used in the brewing process. So they are completely edible by humans and sea creatures.
Yes! I hate the argument that "sanitary products are a luxury." They are not, do you want blood all over your pants? All over your house?
Pigs, cows and chicken are also friends, not food
Load More Replies...Never understood why rabbits are okay to eat, or keep as pets, horses are intelligent and have personalities but you can still eat them, cows are pretty much disposable, yet you get crucified for eating a dog. Meat eaters who lose their s**t when people eat dogs need to take a logic 101 course.
I have to agree. I love my dog more than anything, but meat is meat. You'd get attached to a chicken or a cow the same way as a dog or cat if they were a pet, but you still eat their meat if it comes from a farm, so how is a dog different? Either you eat no meat or accept any meat as eatable. I understand being against the way those dogs are kept and treated in some farms... but being against eating dogs just because they are dogs seems illogical. I think it would be better if we could switch to insects since it's most environmental friendly.
Load More Replies...Anyone here criticizing the consumption of dogs but are also consuming chickens, cows, or pigs is a damn hypocrite.
It is the conditions they are kept in. You cannot stop ethnic people from eating whatever they wish. Same as us Westerners consume meat. Just be kind and humane
Load More Replies...It's interesting how different countries distinguish between food animals and friend animals. I'm unable to see a qualitative difference between a cow and a horse, but people are find eating one and not the other. Same goes for most animals. I've no desire to eat any of them myself.
Because we value things in different ways, for different reasons.
Load More Replies...It's all relative. In India eating cows is frowned on but in the US it's delish! Why not eat dog meat? I don't want to but I wouldn't stop them from doing it.
I can't say this with 100% certainty but wasn't one of the problems the way the dogs were being treated? Obviously not everywhere but weren't some places actually mutilating the animals so they couldn't move? Obviously that's not ok for ANY animal but I wonder if that had something to do with the reason this was passed
Probably. I've read a few times, including here on the site, that some people believe the meat is more tender and tasty when the animals suffer... But I think in that case, better control of the farms to make sure the animals are well treated would be better than just making it illegal - specially since that, by itself, is definitely not going to make people stop doing it.
Load More Replies...I always say this. I don't mind people eating dog meat. I am a vegetarian myself and I am against the eating of meat and it is really bad for the environment. It takes between 5000 and 20.000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of beef! However, if people choose to eat meat, I don't see why eating dog meat is any different than eating cow meat or something. I think that it is wrong to put animals on a pedestal of who is more worthy and less worthy. The only thing I am against is like some parts of China where they torture dogs before eating them because they believe it gives a better taste.
How is dog meat different from beef/chicken/etc? Edit: oh it's not about the dogs, it's about the torturing
As long as they're not stealing anyone's pet to eat, this shouldn't be banned. As someone mentioned, we keep rabbits as pets but it's still okay to eat them.
I don't think it's okay to eat them. I think it's as sickening as eating cat or dog or horse.
Load More Replies...Woohoo! Dogs help people and love people, so why don't we do the same for them
Because we are a cruel, selfish and ungrateful species.
Load More Replies...It's not so much the fact that they eat them- it is another culture after all and I dont think the West should have the right to tell the East what it can eat and vice--versa. It is the horrific conditions in which they are kept and slaughtered that are just unbearable to see -as it is with all animals.
Can you point out where it says that a western country told them to?
Load More Replies...it's just bad practice to eat animals that eat meat. easy way to spread diseases. Not to mention that dogs are traditionally companion species.
Now if they would include cows, chickens, turkeys and pigs that would be something awesome.
If the place I live banned meat, I would leave. I have sensory sensitivities, so there isn't much food that I can eat because some textures feel painful to eat. I tried being vegetarian for a week, and I ate the same 5 meals every day.
Load More Replies...While this may sound like a good news, this isn't accurate. The ruling did not clarify whether the dog farm owner was charged for killing the dog in an illegal way, or whether the killing itself is illegal. Animal rights groups in Korea then interpreted this as what the image suggests, but that was not what the court said. It is still very much a legal thing to eat dog meat in Korea.
Seems like the good old entitlement of western countries to force their beliefs on others. You can eat animals, but only the ones we prefer in the west. We are superior humans who can decide that a dog has more value than a cow because we like steak. smh
that's exactly what it is. "Our values are better than yours because we say so"
Load More Replies...Before this ruling I mean killing man's best friend? No now China need to work on their laws and get ride of the "Soi Festival" every year. It so gross I won't even explain it. IF you want to know go and research it.
next they will ban Cats.then maybe horses, cows , goats sheep and the most intelligent of all the farm animals pigs...
I have 2 criteria for eating animals. I don't eat domestic pets or animals that work.
Doesn't matter. I live here (til 2020) and it still happens. You walk around at the markets and see it. Police turn a blind eye
It changes nothing. I live here (til 2020) and people still do it. You walk around at the markets and see it. Police turn a blind eye.
This has been law in Korea for quite a while, however, it is one of the many laws that are purely academic: the police do not (and have never) enforced this law unless specific instances become publicized.
Why? What's the difference between killing any other animal and a dog?
While I wouldn't eat a dog myself, thinking of it logically it isn't worth than eating a pig. Why ban one of these practices?
They torture them before killing them, and kill them by skinning them, burning them, drowning them, etc.
Load More Replies...An Alaskan Aleut friend's grandma told me, "We only eat the stupid puppies." As it should be.
Intelligence doesn't determine worth. Idiots still have thought and feelings.
Load More Replies...If a society chooses to eat dogs, who TF are you to judge them? Do they judge YOU eating ridiculously priced and NOT environmentally friendly "organic" food? Just because YOU aren't used to it doesn't make it wrong. Other countries eat guinea pigs and horses too... are you going to whine about that? No one seems to care when they eat insects... why is that? And for all you VEGAN people, not everyone in the world can sustain your lifestyle. You are privilaged enough to be able to be vegan but in some countries that lifestyle is impossible. Stop trying to fit the rest of the world into your image.
I agree with the vegan thing, but there are lots of nice vegans, and the rest of your comment is asking for a downvote.
Load More Replies...I feel this was done because of continuous pressure from international "animal activists" who see S. Korea as a place of dog massacre. There have been a number of public shaming cases of exposing dog meat farms in S. Korea on social media followed by international petitions. Instead of all the regulations to keep a thin line between animal abuse and "ethical" meat farm, it might have been more efficient to just rid them all to avoid any possible conflicts and complications. I personally worked for a dog rescue organization before but I don't agree w PETA/vegan fanatics who try to shove their beliefs down others' throat.
So being a person who fights against dog abuse is noble, being a person who fights against the abuse of all animals is a fanatic?
Load More Replies...I have mixed feelings about pandas.... because people mostly only care about protecting "cute" animals like them. I've read and watched so many times about how "ugly" animals like bugs and amphibians are always getting worse off because all the conservation funds and efforts go towards the ones the public likes... But I guess helping some animals is still better than no animals.
huh in Poland several cities decided to ban fireworks on new year because of animals.
If more people would recycle plastic, that would be a good start. I'm appalled at all the trash I see thrown away, that could have been recycled. And not just plastic. My son and I were discussing today the problem of plastic straws. Why couldn't they be made of a fast-degrading material, or even paper? They are only going to be used one time, and can end up in the sea or landfills, taking who knows how long to degrade.
Serious question, does that sugar tax include high fructose corn syrup? If not, it should. Sodas were unhealthy before, but when soft drink companies switched to HFCS they became even worse.
Ugh, doesn't it disgust people to know that their comfort comes from something ripped off of something else's body?
we need to make ocean plastic profitable, if companies start using it and poor people can harvest it and sell it , it is a win win. Stop creating plastic, reuse.
This is good, correct? The crying is confusing. He should be small and happy.
Unfortunately, E-Cigarette smoking is on the rise, especially among teens due to the flavors that comes in them that teens like :(
I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s. It's really hard to detect in girls for the simple reason that all the emphasis is placed on boys' symptoms. It's the same with heart attacks. Everybody knows about classic male symptoms. Fewer people know how differently it presents in women.
@Jeff: I so agree. In almost every case of school shootings, and other mass shootings, the shooter had significant mental health issues. Often, they had stopped getting treatment, stopped taking their meds, etc. Mass shootings are as much a mental health issue, as a gun control issue.
I just hope this is an actual fact... Because I know that here we have a very fake literacy rate made out of people who can pretty much only write their own names and maybe a few words but are already considered literate for statistic purposes.
I got metal re-usable ones for my family! They're only about 5-7 bucks and usually come with a carrying sleeve and a pipe cleaner.
Tbh it's kind of unfair that solar power is currently such a niche product, and easy, affordable solar panels for people to buy would really make a difference
And they do it using a mixture of mud and vegetation..so it's environmentally conscious too.
Good news from a purely ecological point of view. Bad news for the people who make a living in the coal-mining industry. Ironically, it's exactly today that the last coal-mine in my area closes, leaving many unemployed. Maybe someone should finance projects that help these people get new jobs.
Yes, but this is worded a bit poorly, imo. I mean, are they drinking less, or are other countries actually just worse than them now?
FACT: if you throw money and fame at the problem for long enough, it will solve itself
Yeah, and, to no-one's surprise, closely followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Sweden. I was initially shocked to see Sweden so low on the list, but when I saw the actual figures, I realised these countries are statistically so close together, that they'll just keep rotating for the No.1 spot for the foreseeable future. Or, of course, you can take Fox News' word for it that these are in fact hell-holes where Muslim refugees rape anything in sight and where Sharia law will be introduced any day now...
Just walk around Chicago and you'll see what a great system it is! It's been there for years and it's so great to see so many bikers!
As I was reading this, all I could think was that perhaps there is hope for this world.
Always seek this type of news out, it is always there, but the media is doing nothing to make sure we see it. Things are never as bad as they seem to be.
Load More Replies...Ok 2019, you can beat 2018. Let´s get ready to do things even better!
This is so wholesome and really made my day! Thank you, it's been a rough finals week but this really helped!
Thank you! There is so much good in this world... I am not sure why we keep watching the news, which show only bad stuff and make it huge. You are awesome!
Hey Mauro, this stuff is amazing. Any chance you could share your sources? I want to be able to tell people this stuff and then cite a source if they ask.
This was heartwarming to see!! Lots of news outlets use fearmongering and shocking headlines to get more views... while based on truth, it alters the way we percieve the situations. I feel that we need more posts like this. Hopeful things could show us that problems DO have solutions, and they ARE worth working towards :)
thank you Mr. Mauro Gatti <3 finally someone who thinks like me. I really enjoyed reading your article! and the drawings are super cute. Keep going
Several of these are actually kind of scary. "Such and such country was the first to do such and such a thing" and it's hard not to wonder why the heck it took us so long. e.g., Scotland is subsidizing sanitary products? Does that mean that nobody else is??
They also gave me a very mixed feeling. For example the one with women being allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. Don't forget that the activists who actually fought for stuff like this are still held in prison while the prince there is now collecting all the praise for allowing something really really basic.
Load More Replies...LOVE it!! Grazi Positive change IS POSSIBLE when enough people put their minds and hearts together. Let's all work towards eliminating endangered animal lists by education and conservation! <3
Number 27, about Sesame Street's new autistic puppet means so much to me. I have autism, and growing up not knowing why I couldn't keep up with the other kids was so frustrating for myself and my parents. I just really want others to know how to interact with autistic and disabled people, and I know this will really help.
Wonderful ideas, efforts and accomplishments. We need to protect the planet and the life forms on it.
I like how 99% of these are outside of North America. Looks like the rest of the civilized world is overtaking us while we sit here squabbling over oil and cheeto looking m***********s
thank you.. i actually signed in to this application just to say a big "Thank you"

I understand that dogs get scared over fireworks. Mine got freaked out at thunderstorms. Hey, my son returned from Afghanistan and when people started setting off fireworks near the 4th of July, he said "I can't lie. Those were a bit unnerving." But the whole reason we set off fireworks on the 4th of July is to remember the actual fire fighting that happened to gain our independence. Now if you want to make any New Year's fireworks, or fireworks after a baseball game on any old random day, cool. But since we can't get rid of thunder, history that isn't remembered is domed to be repeated, and sound is an interpretation of vibrations by the brain... this isn't really something I consider a priority. Can we work on a quick remedy to get rid of poison ivy??
These are every bit as much "news" that informs us of the goings-ons in the world as the negative, upsetting stories.
With such positive news came so real negative comments. People just can't help being pessimistic and suspicious about EVERYTHING! Be happy people and embrace the good and beauty of life!
It was very interesting to read this but it also made me sad that the USA has lacked so much innovative workable answers to environmental problems. There seems to be such a narrow minded approach to keeping our economy solvent and mostly at the expense of people and our environment.
This makes me think that there's still hope for our beloved Earth. I strongly hope and pray that all the people will finally care for the people and especially for the Earth.
