IKEA Just Fixed The Biggest Problem With IKEA Furniture
IKEA’s furniture has a reputation for being stylish and practical, but also immensely difficult to assemble. After several years of brainstorming and creating, they may have finally solved the problem, and now they’re introducing furniture that’s stronger and simpler than ever before.
Their breakthrough was the innovation of the wedge dowel, a curved block that slides and locks into an opposite slot, allowing pieces of furniture to be ‘snapped’ together without any screws or tools. Manufacturers save on money and resources, while customers save on headaches. IKEA put the wedge dowel on trial in 2014 with their Stockholm cabinet set, and its positive reception led them to develop it further.
The Lisabo table, seen below, is the latest marvel of wedge dowel technology. It’s built to last, and can be taken apart, moved, and reassembled easily.
IKEA is producing new furniture that uses the wedge dowel, a unique innovation that makes assembly a breeze
The ribbed dowel simply slides and locks into a slot, allowing furniture to be ‘snapped’ together
The Lisabo table, a classy birch number, is the latest IKEA marvel of wedge dowel technology
Its assembly requires absolutely zero screws and tools, which saves money and resources for manufacturers
It also saves a lot of hassle for IKEA customers, who have long decried the difficult assembly of IKEA products
IKEA first put the wedge dowel on trial in 2014 with their Stockholm cabinet set, and the response was highly positive
The Lisabo table ‘snaps’ together in minutes, a record compared to the hours some IKEA pieces require
It also comes apart just as easily, so it can be moved and set up again without issue
Sturdy, economical, and simple, wedge dowel technology will adapt furniture to modern, fast-paced lifestyles
Small metal plates can be screwed in for optional extra security, but the table stands strong without them

One the other hand: if you can assemble lego, you essentially have the skills to assemble Ikea furniture...
Load More Replies...I question the durability of such easy assembly. I'd prefer the nuts, bolts, and screws
From what I remember, in japanese carpentry, wooden joint systems are used in order to provide longer lasting furniture. Metallic screws are too hard for wood and will eat into it in time.

OK, I see multiple people are on the same opinion as me, a r******d monkey can assemble a whole IKEA apartment... Or, to be fair, sometimes 2 are needed if they are doing heavier stuff.
My only worry is if I were to knock into the table leg. Would it unclip?
Honestly - if you have the money buy good furniture something that will last you 10 years. Most IKEA items I've bought have returned to their Swedish makers in spirit form long ago.
honestly though, I am 18 years old, have nothing special with Ikea, lots of our things are hand me downs or vintage or idk, all kinds of things from different stores, but I had a bunk bed from Ikea where my brother and I have slept in for over 15 years, now I finally got my own bed and my brother got the bunk bed. It honestly doesn't always have to be bad quality
Load More Replies...I almost got a divorce trying to assemble and IKEA bed frame. The suffering is real. Real first-world.
Is not hard to assemble their products if you read the directions. They're basically diagrams so is not much reading.
Huh. "Snap together" is well known for "falls apart" and "not stable". I'd like to see this in person.
Some room furniture at my parents house, was made locally using this technique 45 years ago, and still there. We lost our creative carpenter when he passed away few years ago . Not a single metallic screw Good to have this technique back
Looks like a good design, although I've assembled dozens of IKEA bookcases, tables, cabinets and other stuff and never found them particularly difficult or time consuming.
Just a little bit of thought from a few clever people has saved then thousands of Euros/dollars/ GBP pounds, And will sell more of their products.
I honestly can't fathom why so many people find assembling Ikea furniture so difficult. Just pay attention to what you're doing, and follow the instructions step by step. Plus, their stuff has only been easier and easier to assemble. I do like the idea of easier disassembly for moving, but I worry just how stable that would all be. I guess I would have to see it in person.
slide and lock dowels.... unless there is something you have to cram in there after the dowel this 'innovation' seems to only make IKEA furniture rickiter then before. Something that simply slides into place will just as simply slide out again. Handy, I'm sure, for moving, but a huge liability if you have kids! You can tell them not to climb on the furniture all you like, but the moment your back is turned....
Perhaps Stella needs a man to do it for her.........runs and ducks for cover.
I assembled my dining room set, three bookcases and a nightstand from IKEA. None of them were difficult.
Yeah, it's immensely difficult - if you're r******d! Can't really understand how one can fail - there are always very clear instructions!
Wooden dowels have been around for millennia. Re-discovery perhaps.
"The Lisabo table ‘snaps’ together in minutes, a record compared to the hours some IKEA pieces require" Seriously ? Hours ? I really don't see how difficult it is, the plan is usually easy to follow...
Okay first things first - IKEA furniture is easy to assemble. Literally half of my appartment put together on my own in less than a day (tables, shelves). However - this construction seems more sturdy than the teeny tiny wooden pegs and screws that hold most furniture together, so YAY! Also, this feels very much inspired by Japanese woodwork, that sees pieces join together without a single screw in sight (very much simplified though). I like it - IKEA is somewhat moving forward, and towards more structurally-sound designs.
No! I love putting together IKEA furniture! What about the beloved cam locks?
