Two Genetically Identical Twins Separately Ate Vegan And Meat-Heavy Diets For 12 Weeks, Then Compared Their Results
Einstein famously talked about a “twin paradox,” where one identical twin gets sent out into space in a high-speed rocket, and the other remains on Earth. In the experiment, due to spatial relativity, the Earth twin would age more. The question here is, what kind of identical twins would we use for such an experiment? The answer: the Turner Twins, Hugo and Ross, who do expeditions across all continents, climb mountains, do treks, and go on other kinds of adventures together.

Now, they have ventured to explore the world of diet. For 12 weeks, from January to March, Hugo ate only a vegan diet, while Ross ate an omnivorous, but meat-heavy diet. They had help from scientists at King’s College, who tracked their weight, cholesterol, and body fat levels, among other things. Their thinking was that since they’re genetically identical, comparing diets could be deemed more legitimate than in other cases. On top of that, they have done endurance training five to six times a week because they have to prepare for their future expeditions. The experiment has now ended—cue the drum roll, for we’re going to discuss the results.

Hugo had started the experiment weighing 185 lbs with 13%, and ended up weighing 4 pounds less, and has trimmed his body fat down to 12%

His blood cholesterol levels have dropped. After 12 weeks of a vegan diet, Hugo reported higher and more consistent levels of energy, probably because his blood sugar levels didn’t drop as often as they did before. On a vegan diet, Hugo’s mental focus was also much better due to the same reason. However, there were some negative side effects as well. For reasons unknown to him, he said he “just lost” his libido, though he notes that this side effect may not occur to everyone.
Hugo’s vegan diet gave him more energy and helped losing fat

Ross started smaller with 175 lbs and 13% body fat, he had gained 10 pounds of muscle and 4 pounds of fat, increasing his body fat levels to 15%, and ending up weighing 189 lbs
Ross, who was always the slightly bigger guy between the two, ended up no different in this experiment. His blood cholesterol levels remained consistent during the 12 weeks.

The twins have pondered over the results

In the aftermath, they admitted that they would want to make the experiment longer if they attempt it again in the future to get more definitive results. They want another experiment to take at least 6 months to a year. Scientists also collected fecal samples before and after the experiment and found out some other interesting things. Turns out Hugo’s gut microbiome has gained more resilience towards chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes and obesity, which proves that vegan diets help reduce these risks by helping the microbiome. However, most surprisingly, both Hugo’s and Ross’s gut microbial diversity has suffered due to their diets. Although Ross’s, the omnivore’s, microbiome changed only slightly, it remained much more consistent than Hugo’s, the vegan’s.

They both agreed to incorporate more vegan substitutes, especially snacks, into their diet, as they’ve noted that it gives certain benefits. They’ve also learned to plan and incorporate plant-based foods in their diet. Ross and Hugo refrained from making radical changes to their dietary lifestyle—in other words, they haven’t become vegans. Yet.

Share on Facebook"Incorporate more vegan foods into their diet" but not go vegan. You mean, 'eat more vegetables'? Which has been the number 1 tip for a healthy diet for as long as I can remember.
I hope you at least learned that there's two identical twins that look like Matthew McConaughey
Load More Replies...I just love these "unbiased" reports. The test shows that there's nothing that proves that the vegan life style is better or healthier. But for some reason the last line has to be "They haven’t become vegans. Yet." Most likely none of them will and I even think that Hugo has one very good reason to avoid veganism all together.
Don't take this BoredPanda articles as a serious scientific consensus, instead look for proper research papers and studies on actual science websites. I myself am not vegan nor vegetarian, I love my Hot Dogs, but the science behind it is clear. Heavy meat eater have a 25% increased mortality rate. They also have a less physical and mental energy. The libido issue is very odd, because from the 100,000 of studies that have been done over the decades, almost subject have reported the opposite, to have an increased sex drive. But of course this doesn't apply to every single person. The main reason people become vegan or vegetarian is because of ethical, moral and environmental reasons. I myself tried a pure vegan diet multiple times, but caught myself eating hot dogs or burgers eventually. Overall I eat a lot less meat than I used to and I think that's the point, to slowly lower the meat consumption over time.
Load More Replies...Malice Evil, it's not just saturated fat, it's animal fat, plants are usually a mixture of mono-non-saturated, poly-non-saturated and saturated fats; it's also cholesterol (plants do not make cholesterol like human and animal bodies do), and it is that strong animal protein itself - plant protein does not do harm to human body.
Load More Replies...I haven't eaten meat in 28 years and honestly don't miss it and don't mind when others eat it. Eat what works for you. In saying that I don't think meat eaters even realize how much of their diet is NOT meat. You can have balance and many already do even if they can't really imagine ever giving up meat. There are so many delicious meat alternative products on the market -- give something new a try. Who knows..you might not miss your bacon after all - I sure don't!
I find the term "meat eater" just silly. I eat meat, but it's just a small part of the meal, and at least once a week nonexistent. That makes me an omnivore, like most people.
Load More Replies...Next round, please swap the diets. I'd love to know if identical twins really means a comparable base line.
Anyone else think it is weird that "Ross’s meat-based meal" is a plate of tofu and kale??
I think they called it a meat-based diet (so mostly meat) but he did need some other foods to stay healthy, which proves that neither is better, we would just try to be balanced. But anyway, maybe they meant protein based? It was kind of poorly conducted, but hey it's something.
Load More Replies...Interesting... would be good to do a longer trial, just as the twins proposed, to see what the long-term changes are.
Agreed. 12 weeks is nothing. Nutritional results on the body is a long term observation type of thing.
Load More Replies...TLDR eat more veggies, but not only veggies.
Load More Replies...Sooooo the whole point of this post was basically eat more vegetables?
Thing is, there's no way of eating a meat-heavy diet without causing tremendous suffering.
So that's why we need to balance meat and vegetables together! Like the triangle
Load More Replies...The vegan diet offers endless variety, if you don't just always eat the same vegetables.
You can eat everything that vegans eat. You can add sea food, eggs, dairy and meat to that. You can still have endless variety. What's your point?
Load More Replies...How come the only thing I regularly read anyone brag about in posts like these is meat-fanatics pointing out how often vegans would tell anyone they are vegans? Seems the other way round ... but if it makes you happy - nice that after all there are people who are easy to satisfy...
Sometimes the ones that try to make us feel bad for eating meat are annoying, but all the vegans on this site, seem really nice and friendly!
Load More Replies...I, like many Americans, used to eat entirely too much meat. It probably made up 60-70% of my intake. I married a vegetarian, and while I will never cease to eat meat altogether, I do eat considerably less meat, and way more veggies. the biggest difference is that I feel more energized, but to each their own.
When my close friend became vegan, I learned some great recipes. My absolute favorite is vegan kibbeh. I make it at least once a month- it is amazing. When I make it for myself, I use a regular egg because I'm not vegan. https://www.onearabvegan.com/2017/06/vegan-pumpkin-kibbeh-2-0/

I don't understand it either, Malcontent, why would vegan lost muscle mass. Many athletes and body builders are vegans, if you want to know more follow 'Plant Based Ben' on Instagram.

Both my wife and I are over 250lbs but neither of us have diabetes or any major health issues. Sometime larger people are larger because they eat a lot of food including veggitables. I love baking broccoli and kale tossed with just a bit of olive oil and salt. On several occasions I have eaten a whole bag of broccoli this way just because it taste so good to me. Being large doesn't always mean being unhealthy.
Yes, but it might catch up with you when you get older. When we are young, our bodies can tolerate a lot of abuse - high animal protein diet, smoking, alcohol, drug abuse; aging is actually degeneration, degradation (yea, I don't like it either) which means that our body - the organs are not capable to withstand all that abuse any more, hence all those painful, chronic inflammations and diseases occur at the old age, but don't have anything to do with aging itself.
Load More Replies...I was vegetarian for about a year and have been vegan nearly 5 years now. I went vegan primarily for the wellbeing of animals, humans and the environment/planet. So, the health benefit (both physical and mental) is a big bonus. Yes, I’m much healthier now.

The long and the short of it is we are designed to eat a 'balanced ' diet. When our ancient ancestors bones were examined from changing from hunter gatherers to cereal farming oesteoporosis started to show in the bones. Our main problem is ,we eat too much in the western world huge portions of food in restaurants and takeaways. We have to change our habits and stop overproduction of meat but keep it 'balanced ' !!! Meat is the best source of iron but we need to have vegetables as well. Ba!ance!!!!
Mauriel, when you eat animals - everything is "second-hand' like for example iron, you mentioned, the animal got its iron from plants it ate and its body used it, what you got after you ate that animal flesh (body) was second-hand iron. The same with calcium, vegans has lesser calcium intake, but from the prime source (plants) and have stronger, denser bones than meat, eggs, and dairy eaters. Vegans do NOT have osteoporosis!!! Get your iron and calcium the same way a cow gets hers - from plants. As for a balanced diet - yes: fruits - vegetables - WHOLE grains - legumes !!! (more info at The Physician Committee for RESPONSIBLE Medicine).
Load More Replies...Dr Xand & Chris of operation ouch!!! Do the same experiment even better and more restrictive, theres a very interesting documentary called "Sugar vs Fat" worth a view.
I think the takeaway message here is that a plant-based diet won't do your body any harm, but it also won't make you s**t butterflies. So if you would like to cut down on animal products for environmental/ethical reasons, you have nothing to worry about. Just take your vitamin B12 (the only vitamin that's not in plants - but omnivores should watch out for that too, most people are not getting enough from their diet due to food hygiene), eat healthy and you'll be fine.
You just know their parents wanted to name them Hugo Boss, but wanted to be 'different' so they opted for Hugo Ross instead. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
Hugo's "feelings" were that he was better, but actually the only real provable thing was he lost his libido.
What a dumb experiment! What did they eat exactly? Not enough data. Heavy in protein.......ok. What about the rest of the regime? Alcohol, lots of fruit? Not so much.... lot of high carb veg? Low carb veg......list goes on. Not a very extensive study.
It wasn't conducted very well, but if someone were to put all of the things they were missing in, it would be so much better
Load More Replies...They were healthy to begin with and were monitored. 🤷🏽♀️ Show me an AVERAGE human do the same, and then we’ll talk! 😉
