6 Facts About Iceland That You Might Not Have Heard Of Making It The Safest Country In The World, As Shared By This TikTok User
Many people think that TikTok is an app for children and teenagers that can give no value, but that’s not entirely true. Like any other platform, TikTok has its own video genres, like dancing, sport, book, and animal videos. Naturally there’s an educational side to it too. Specialists come to share their knowledge, but also people who like to share cool things they found out so that you can know about them too.
Today we will be looking at a video made by @livvontheedge in which she shared that Iceland is the safest country in the world and explained what makes the country so good to live in. People loved the video, and it is one of the most viewed videos on her account, seen by 13.6M people and 4.1M left a heart on it.

This TikToker made a video about the safest country in the world, which is Iceland, and it seems that it’s a pretty cool place to live

The TikToker’s handle lets us assume that her name is Olivia and she has 1.2M followers on her account. You would love her content if you enjoy creepy facts, mysterious occurrences and true crime stories.
But the video about Iceland isn’t creepy at all; on the contrary, it highlights the good side of living there. Bored Panda has another article with a list of interesting and cool facts about Iceland, so if you would like to know more about this beautiful and amazing country, you can click here after you’re done with this one.
The crime rate is very low, so police officers don’t carry guns

In 2018, the homicide rate was 0.9 per 100,000 inhabitants

Olivia begins with the fact that police officers don’t carry guns with them. And the SWAT team do possess firearms, but they rarely have to use them. After all the negative media attention to police officer violence in the USA, the woman thinks that this makes the Icelandic policemen very approachable.
They don’t have to carry guns most probably because the crime rate, especially violent crime, rate is so low. Olivia stated that the murder rate is between 0 and 1.5 a year, which is true. According to United Nations Office on Drugs And Crime, in 2018, Iceland had 3 homicides, which is 0.9 victims per 100,000 inhabitants.
According to Olivia’s research, crime rates are low because higher education is affordable, unemployment rates are low, and there are safety nets in place

According to Olivia’s research, there are not a lot of reasons to commit crime, since everyone can afford a college degree, needing to pay an amount that is less than a month’s rent. This may surprise you, but students have to only pay an annual registration fee that, at the University of Iceland, is ISK 75,000 ($612). Another reason for the low crime rate that Olivia points out is that the employment rate is high, and in case someone needs support, there are safety nets in place.
Iceland is the number one in gender equality and their pride wasn’t protested once
Iceland is a place of equal rights. Iceland is in first place in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index, which means it’s the place in the world right now for women. LGBTQ+ rights are also very progressive in the country. Olivia mentions that their pride is the only one that has never been protested.
There are no harmful animals and, luckily for Icelanders, there are no mosquitoes

Not only are the people amazing, tolerant and smart, but nature itself is not dangerous at all. If you would be afraid to live in Australia because of all the venomous insects and gigantic spiders, Iceland doesn’t have any of that. The only native land mammal is the arctic fox, which is not harmful to humans, and what is more, there are no mosquitoes.
Icelanders feel safe enough to leave their babies in strollers alone outside to sleep
The last thing that Olivia brings up that indicates Iceland is the safest country in the world is that people aren’t afraid to leave their babies in strollers to sleep outside. It is actually a common practice in the Nordic countries to leave their babies to sleep outside in winter because they believe it boosts their immune system. But the essential thing here is that people are not afraid to leave their babies alone, because they know no one will harm them.

They also don't have snakes, and they had me there.

I really wish they would stop this. One picture of her would be sufficient.
Load More Replies...did someone just try to low-key knock Iceland for having a low rate of diversity in the twitter replies? smdh....i cant even
Imagine the uproar if someone states that backwards, on another country/region 🤷🏼♂️
Load More Replies...Maybe his murder is drawn out over two years, so it is only 1/2 a murder per year.
Load More Replies...I agree with Dave P. 305,000 people, and 90% of the people one ethnicity, and a shared Lutheran religion (eliminating large cultural differences) Low crime should be expected. It sounds like a great place to live.
I might be wrong, but I think these reasons could apply to Norway too. For the record, I've never been to Iceland and been to Norway only twice, but read about it and talked to Norwegians a lot.
We have mosquitos and several predators. About 30 murders a year, and just above 100 deaths in trafic accidents in a population just above 5 million
Load More Replies...🇸🇪Sweden here... Most of that is true in the rest of Scandinavia aswell. We got mosquitos, though 🙂
Yeah, I'm from Finland and I was nodding along until we got to the mosquitoes. Damn I wish we didn't have those.
Load More Replies...Iceland has low crime, yes. Most countries with a homogeneous population and limited cultural diversity have low crime. Countries facing a recent influx of different cultures tend to devolve into a higher crime state (here's looking at you, continental Europe).
Vermont in the US has a fairly homogenous population and a low crime rate despite having a high gun ownership rate.
Load More Replies...NZ cops don't carry guns. NZ homicide rate is as low.NZ has no harmful animals. No foxes either.
And NZ has Karl Urban and Lucy Lawless so super win
Load More Replies...But without extreme and purposeful income inequality, how will we tell the winners from the losers?! -conservatives.
Radical Socialism IS bad, many people are confused with the terms social system (Scandinavian model or social market system) and socialism (Venezuela, German "Democratic" Republic). Socialism is the last thing anybody should want, a social system is great
Load More Replies...It's in the border of two tectonic plaques, so yes, lots of volcanos and hot water.
Load More Replies...Ugh, even if the police here are roughly a thousand times better than US police, theyre still pretty bad. Their sex crime department is so slow and messes up cases all the time, and officers are known for harassing protesters and arresting people for crimes such as standing in front of courthouse.
"Today we are gonna talk about Iceland but 97% of the screen will be my face"...Every tiktok wannabe influencer inspirational zoomer ever
Just realized that scandinavia and iceland also are the viking-countries. Seems viking countries are the best and most equal.
Things get easier when your population is only 300.000, and this is the best lesson we can learn here - although it's much too late for most of us to do something about it : small is beautiful. Don't grow overcrowded, and you'll be able to take care of every individual. When I visited the country a long time ago, they told me there had not be any murder in 20 years (last criminal registered there being... a Frenchman). Not everything is perfect though, and even Iceland has some environmental issues (see that excellent movie : Woman at War !). Besides, nature there is breathtaking. You really feel this is the last station before Asgard. One of my best memories : my 3 friends and I had rented a car, I was driving in the middle of nowhere, just a road and lava fields all around. Everyone else in the car was taking a nap. Suddenly, right in front of me, a majestic rainbow appeared above the road. Two big crows were flying nearby. I muttered"OK, Odin, I'll behave here, I promise".
A lot of these points, while not to the same degree, apply to every country that has some kind of, say, healthcare system. The atrocity of not having one being jazzed up to some result of or requirement for FrEeDuMm is actually one of the most evil deceptions the rich and their asslickers have placed in the public's mind in the US, to ensure people will vote against their very own interest in order to secure said sad excuse of freedom that there currently is in place.
I love everything on their list :) I do wonder what are the worst things about living in Iceland are. Anyone know?
Icelands crime rate is awesome. Every country with a proper healthcare system and affordable education has lower crime rates, but Iceland is the cherry on top.
England has terrible crime rate especially home in asian and knife crimes. Free healthcare too while 4.5 million people wait for surgeries due to covid shutdown of operating rooms because they are government run
Load More Replies...So a country with about 350,000 people, where over 90% are within 8 degrees of relations to each other, wealthy due to lots of natural resources they exploit even at the cost of the environment to fund welfare project, would have low crime and unity? Wow! who would have thought. This is stupid and dumb
Also low corruption and a culturally uniform society that value freedom, wellness and respect. It may be obvious, but I think that it's important to have in mind the best examples of society we have as an aspiration. Sure they have a very lucky location, but the governement corruption and the mentality of the citizens are some big factors for being such a safest country.
Load More Replies...If their PRIDE was never questioned, then I seriously doubt that any diverse human beings would be either! I just bet, they love new and diverse humans ! A chance to learn, try new foods and practice a new language for both sides! Plus, I think it would be amazing if we were more accepting of diversity, and immigrants! How does anyone thing we all got here?? The only natural Americans, are the Native Americans, and we treated them horribly! They tried extending the hands of friendship, and the puny a**ed white men took severe advantage of them, killed them, sometimes destroying entire villages, and thought, they, they, were the superior race.. and yes, I am likely descended from them here and there, but that just makes me feel ashamed. I am proud that my main history is one of immigrants and cultures not completely made up of puny a-hole white men! I know we are all not like this, and I am very proud of this part of America, and being American, but really now, if everyone tried hard?
Hi, unfortunately although I believe pride may never have been protested, that doesn't mean it wasn't questioned. We have our equal share of jerks, same as everywhere.
Load More Replies...Crime is so low cause it's too damn cold to go outside and be a thug!!
I'm not gonna leave my baby anywhere by himself much less outside
well...if there is a nuclear war it wont be safe there either...as there will be something called a nuclear winter which will be a disaster for most life on this planet
They have access to geothermal power plants and are somewhat self-sufficient. + There are not really strategic targets that require a nuclear strike. Iceland seems like one of the safest places to be during a nuclear war
Load More Replies...In 2001 a drunk guy stole a car with a child in the back, the car was left running outside a store, I think. He drove away, saw the child in the back and then returned the car to the same spot. He was arrested and confessed on the spot.
I've found these types of posts to be highly simplistic. Every country has crime.People steal babies everywhere.Different things contribute to higher crimes rates, like population density. My country is a hot mess right now,but bad people are everywhere unfortunately.Different political climates have different problems.Free health care ... not exactly. It's just higher taxes.
It's the first place I've visited that i immediately wanted to live there!
Most of these are seriously not that unique. The actual reasons for the low crime rate must be different.
There's no dogs in Iceland, either. Whether that's a plus or a minus depends on how much you like dogs, I guess.
That's not true, but not all animals may come here and those that can must quarantine for several weeks
Load More Replies...Trump appointed ambassador to Iceland, Jeffrey Ross Gunter, wanted special permission to carry a gun, have bodyguards, door-to-door armored car service and stab-proof vest.
You can be safe. Or you can be free. But not both. That is the "catch" of socialism.
But isn't Japan has high suicidal rate? Despite low crime rate?
Load More Replies...I'm sure that the US has a crime rate much more higher than Iceland. Sure it would be useful to take the guns away to cops in certain areas, but I think that you can't implement this thing in an area with an high violence rate.
Load More Replies...People running away from hardships and war ain't running to Iceland, so of course life is great. They do not have to share their resources and help the less fortunate. When it comes to natural disasters does anyone get any aid from Iceland? Nope. No sir that's for the US, UK, Europe and/or Canada.
There are a lot of downsides to Iceland as well. She's just highlighting things to try to make the USA look bad.
I lived in Finland for 10 years, where I was encouraged to leave my baby outside in her stroller, because Finland is ‘SOooo SaFe!!’ Never could bring myself to do it, but one time I left the stroller outside for 15 minutes to have a quick bite at a cafe (baby came inside with me) and in that time some b******e stole her blanket and toys out of the stroller. It’s consistently called the ‘happiest country in the world’ but I’m gonna go with majority of my adult life experience and call BS on that one.
It's been three weeks since you said this, do you still have the same views or have they changed
Load More Replies...Says a man - who is too funny. When woman can afford to educate themselves they suddenly lose interest in "expressing" their sexuality for money.
Load More Replies...I don't see the negative part of that. If less diversity and a more stricter immigration policy are related with a major safety, maybe that's the right way.
Load More Replies...I don't know about you, but I hesitate before approaching anyone who carries a lethal weapon with them whether they plan on using it on me or not. So yeah, carrying a gun makes one less approachable.
Load More Replies...Truth Monster is back everyone! Still drinking the racism juice I see.
