I Made Penguin Sculptures And Placed Them In The Waters Around My Town To Raise Awareness About Global Warming

Do you see the penguin? Why did I do two penguin sculptures and placed them in the waters around my hometown Landskrona?

I wanted to combine two things. First that the environment and global warming is being placed in the backseat in many countries at the moment. It’s not a priority and it needs to be. Glaciers and the Antarctic ice are melting at an alarming rate. Think about the world as your own body, if it’s sick. You would do everything to make it well again. It would be your main priority.

Second, I wanted to do a public installation that both brought smiles to people’s faces and made them think. Every day we are bombarded with news about horrible things that happens all over the world. And people just shuts down, I get it. It’s impossible to care about every single bad thing that happens. That why I wanted to approach this installation another way. A cute penguin on an ice sheet. That’s harmless and fun. That opens people up to take it in, stop for a moment and hopefully think: ”How did that penguin get here? It’s cute but out of place… Oh, it’s probably because the ice is melting… That’s not good, maybe I should do something about it…”

I wanted to wait longer before asking but I can't because I’m quite excited by this. What kind of feedback have you had on this project since publication?

Its gotten a lot of positive feedback. Then it´s a sensitive topic for some so i did expect some negative feedback from "the other side" :) but i am fine with it, as long as people talk about it the installation is a success.

Nice art. However, with you living in Sweden, I would be more worried about global cooling instead of global warming. With the sun entering another tranquil period, and heralding an upcoming Grand Solar Minimum(little ice age), its going to get much colder, especially where you live. I think Prague's yellow penguins were first. I know warning about global warming is always a good idea but not with styrofoam!

Had to google the prague penguins, really cool. I get that people can have an issue with the styrofoam, but that is what i could afford. And really, a landfill on land is way more dangerous and birds can fly. ( i wont leave them there, one is already back in the studio and i will bring the other one back soon)

So if you can't afford environmentally friendly things, why could anyone else? You've just proved yourself wrong. Save the world lol

if i have a choice between two products i always buy the one who is more environment/ eco friendly. Let say if Greenpeace protest against a oil rig and gets there by using fossil fuel in their boats. Are all their work for nothing then?
