I hear other artists talk about what they do, using big words like transcendent and trans-formative and I wonder if it’s all BS. Some of my first sculptural work was simply wet earth with various leaves and sticks and water elements……..you guessed it I was 5. I’ve always needed to do these things; it’s no more transcendent than that. If I’m not letting these “transformative” ideas tumble free of my head, they get clogged up in there and I get snappy, just ask my husband! Writing this statement caused me a great deal of angst, just ask the cheesecake I assaulted with frustration. A lot of artists have enormous egos and these statements are a breeze, apparently my wee ego is shriveled up like a raisin and is hiding somewhere under the cupboard in the kitchen.
I wasn’t able to feed my need to crete until I was forty , having very little money and two children, my husband and children needed to be my priority. So I waited until they grew up and started their own lives. With all that said, I will tell you that when I was in high school, there was no place I would rather be than in a messy clay covered art room. I was a self conscious nerdy child with few friends and too many bullies, I found confidence in art and it became an addiction. When the work is going well, it’s amazing. It’s as if the creativity is simply pouring out and as long as nothing gets in the way I just float with the
current. I approach every project like a problem that needs a solution. There is nothing better than finding the solution and every piece is a series of these moments when I find the solution, it’s satisfying in a way that life rarely is.
I really love making sculptures that can also be used and enjoyed, it has a purpose. I have made pieces for special occasions in life and pieces that mean something to those that receive them. It gives me gratification that my art can fill an emotional need and not simply hang on a wall to be seen by few.
I am a self taught sculptor, crafter and designer in Wrangell, AK, I love making unique one of a kind sculptural pieces. I started designing Steampunk ladies accessories, collars and cuffs, which made me realized how much I love making costume pieces. From there I learned about Cosplay construction techniques on YouTube (thank you EvilTedSmith) and started adapting them to making custom top hats and other accessories. Cosplay construction is all about keeping it light and strong.which is perfect for hats. Cosplayers usually recreate characters, I’m really inspired by Tim Burton’s work and Art Nouveau and like to create something no one has ever seen before.
I post progress pictures off most of my work on my Facebook Page as a personal journal of my work.
