The camera has become a tool to express myself, as a method to escape my moods and release them. For all the words I could never write, the camera became my pen – In Rooms is my story, photography is my vitality.
In 2011, I discovered photo books during a time of uncertainty. While observing the pages of Francesca Woodman and Diane Arbus’s art books, to name a few, my soul felt rejuvenated. After years of longing for direction, I finally felt a sense of purpose reading about their stories and viewing their artwork.
In 2012, I moved to New York with two suitcases and the intention to learn traditional darkroom printing. I signed up for a black and white darkroom workshop and volunteered at international center of photography where I sought out knowledge of kindred spirits and master printers. I have remained self-taught ever since. As an artist, it is my mission to bring my ideas to life, from the vision in my mind to the image held wet in my darkroom.
In 2014, I decided to dedicate my life fully to art. I left my behind my mathematics teaching job and committed myself to the darkroom. I decided to make a book, presented in chronological order, of my ongoing photography project In Rooms and plan to release them every couple of years. In a realm between literature and film, these images ‘In Rooms’ and the narrative explore the internal dialogue of the human psyche, bringing to the surface our repressed desires and fears. With a similar intention of the Surrealist movement and Jungian’s shadow work, In Rooms aims to tap into the unconscious mind and unlock the imagination.
My subjects are myself, and people that I love or admire deeply – people that I get to know over time and study their inner worlds of violence, desire, madness and fear, like my own. Moments In Rooms feel real, whether lived, observed, dreamed or hallucinated. As much as I script the story, I also let the story tell itself, as it comes to me in each room. As I evolve – as my characters do – so does the story and I let it. In Rooms is my legacy, left for generations to come to study, to seek inspiration from, to find answers to questions unknown.
The first volume, 2014-2015, was published in May 2016. The second volume (2016-2017) is due out in early 2018. It is my hope that through my artwork and volumes of my photo books I can inspire hope and a sense of purpose to others and liberate viewers of their fears and desires.
