40-Ton Whale Was Just Filmed Jumping Completely Out Of The Water, And This Incredible Video Is Going Viral
Humpback whales are pretty big. Quite enormous in fact. The average weight of a fully grown adult is around 36,000kg, which is about the same weight as 24 adult hippos, but that didn’t stop the massive mammal in the video below from putting on an incredible air display when it leapt completely out of the water in South Africa recently.
The footage was shot in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mbotyi by Craig Capehart, a scuba diver who was sitting in a “rubber duck” inflatable boat when the graceful giant decided to make an appearance. He estimates that the whale weighed around 40 tons, but size clearly meant nothing to this graceful giant. “It seems that never before has a recording been made of an adult humpback whale leaping entirely out of the water! A very rare event, indeed,” wrote Craig in the caption accompanying the video. “Dolphins and even Great White Sharks have been seen flying out of the water, but this is a first for an adult humpback whale!”

Share on FacebookI have seen calves breaching, thereby almost entirely coming out of the water, but the scene in this video must be a once-in-a-lifetime shot. Watching these animals "play" with the water is intensively soothing, and it gives you the impression that they have a notion of joy. Save the whales!
Of course they have joy!!! Wtf ?!? How could you say something like that
Load More Replies...Thats so amazing! And i laghed at the thought of 24 adult hippos doing the same thing
You'd better be careful June, and make certain they never hear you saying this, because hippos have absolutely No Sense of Humor. In Africa, more people are killed by hippos than by crocs. And heaven help anybody making fun of them. ;D
Load More Replies...Why do they do this? Is it playing or is the mama whale trying to protect her baby from the boat by showing how big she is?
Had the same question...Maybe trying to remove those animals attached to their skin?
Load More Replies...Advertising was amazing! I watched it instead of the video for 30 secs and I'm amused enough not to watch any other video here again.
Too bad whales don't have access to the internet, he'll never be able to prove it to his buddy Brad
Incredible. My only curiosity is which scale was used to say it was 40 Tons
Awesome footage, Craig! They are showing people how happy they are not to have them shooting harpoons at them.
This was a similar situation captured by a photographer off the West Coast of scotland - Humpback in mid air - https://www.facebook.com/arisaigmarine/photos/a.776899769011411.1073741834.751319131569475/776901465677908/?type=3&theater
If I remember correctly this is how whales herd their food together and then have Lunch, Breakfast, Supper, etc. :0) Really great video. Love the one that jumps clear of the water completely, that is indeed a rare sighting.
That whale was having the time of his/her life and putting on quite the show.
I heard that the jump out of the water because of parasites it kills the itch or st like that.
I'm pretty sure he just met a nice girl humpback and is madly in love.
Every time they jump out I just hear them going HUUUUURRRRRGGGGHHH with effort lol
I'm an animal lover, but dolphins beluga and whales are my number one priority. This video is amazing.. I've never seen a huge whale come out of the water like that. It must have been a good day for him and felt happy and free. He just gave it his all.. Thank you for that video..!!
Amazing footage! This would be really useful for identification purposes for humpback whale research as you can see the tail and fins clearly!
This is to show that in Africa, even in the winter the water is boiling hot and the wales try to get away from it.
It's called breaching and all whales do it, just most go straight up and sort of fall over. Great Video!!!
They are knocking itchy sea lice off themselves. Bears rub up against trees and whales slap themselves on the water to dislodge parasites that are attacking their skin.
