With all that's been in the news lately, one can easily think that humans are just the Earth's waste. And while that probably applies to some of us, there are plenty of awesome people as well. At least that is what the subreddit r/HumansAreMetal is trying to prove. With over 539,000 members, the community is sharing random acts of kindness and heroism in hopes of restoring our hope in humanity. From honoring firefighters who lost their lives during 9/11 to car crash survivors showing the lifesaving effects of seatbelts, it is doing one heck of a job, too. Continue scrolling and check out some of the most popular posts on the subreddit.

"The aim of our community is to showcase just how bad*ss humans really are," a moderator of the subreddit, Stuttero, told Bored Panda. "In a sentence, it's a place for people doing bad*ss things."

Stuttero said that a lot of the long-time members of the sub are also big fans of our sister communities, r/natureismetal and r/natureisbrutal, "which both showcase similar content to r/HumansAreMetal, albeit with animals/wildlife instead of humans, and slightly more graphic content in the case of the latter - most of the team definitely do believe that the more gory content is viewed really well by the community."

The moderator highlighted that shared interests really are key to building a good, strong Reddit community. "It's been clear to us for as long as we've been here that the people make the community what it is—it's for this reason that we really try to give people a fair amount of latitude to post what interests them and the wider community—one thing for sure is that we wouldn't be where we are today without them."

As for the people in the pictures, they couldn't have done all these wonderful things if it wasn't for their ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of others. Empathy is crucial for behaving compassionately—it allows us to experience another person's point of view, rather than just our own, and enables us to do good not because we have to but because we want to. Because we know it's what has to be done.

We, humans, begin to show signs of empathy in infancy and the trait develops steadily through childhood and adolescence. Yes, most of us are likely to feel greater empathy for people like ourselves and may feel less empathy for those outside our family, community, or race but it also allows us to bridge these gaps.

First responders, humanitarian aid workers, doctors, therapists, journalists, and others whose work involves opening themselves up to people's pain tend to be especially empathic. However, they need to watch out because all the heartbreak of those they help or whose stories they record can accumulate and when this "emotional residue" gets big enough, they may shut down, burn out, and become less willing or able to give of themselves.

Stuttero added that the same moderation team runs five communities all centered around a main common interest—our natural world, with the primary, largest communities being r/NatureIsFu*kingLit and r/natureismetal. They also operate r/natureisbrutal, r/naturewasmetal, and r/HumansAreMetal.

"Each one has quite a unique content specialization, but there's sure to be something for everyone in one of our communities. Between the communities, we have been very grateful to have been able to raise tens of thousands of dollars for animal and nature-orientated charities, along with hosting AMAs (public Q&A type sessions) with figures from all over the animal and nature-based world. We've also teamed up with other communities, charities, and organisations across not just Reddit but all over the Internet as part of events such as Superb Owl Sunday, and we regularly hold image and video contests," the moderator said.

She was a member of the German resistance movement of Christian students The White Rose (Die Weiße Rose), co-founded by her brother Hans. Sadly, all members were arrested and killed in 1943 after they were denounced...

Every time I visit Munich, I go and see the place where she threw anti-nazi leaflets from the windows of LM University. There is a stone mural made on the street showing the leaflets. Inside the university, there is a bust of her and a memorial called the White Rose, where fresh white roses are delivered every day.

"Most people who know the name Sophie Scholl know she was a 21 year old German student activist who was executed by the Nazis for distributing anti-Nazi pamphlets on her college campus. But people don’t talk about what happened leading up to her execution, or what happened after. Sophie and her brother Hans were caught by a university janitor named Jakob Schmid as they distributed pamphlets in a courtyard. He grabbed them, declared them “under arrest,” and turned them over to the Gestapo. Four days of interrogations later, they were in front of Nazi judge Roland Freisler (one of Hitler’s favorites, his “hanging judge” flown in from Berlin) for a show trial that Hans and Sophie’s parents weren’t allowed in the courtroom for. Hans, Sophie, and their friend Christoph Probst were all found guilty of treason, sentenced to death, and beheaded a few hours later. No one talks about this janitor, Jakob Schmid. He got a cash reward and a promotion for turning in Sophie and Hans. The University of Munich threw him a celebration. Hundreds of students attended and cheered for him. He thanked them with a Nazi salute. After the war, Jakob Schmid was arrested and put on a trial of his own. He said he only turned the Scholls in because distributing pamphlets was against university policy - it wasn’t because of the content of the pamphlets. When you think of Nazis, you probably think of uniformed officers. But the Nazis were a political party of everyday people. So also think of a janitor tsk-tsking that someone wasn’t protesting “the right way.” A student at a rally applauding him. A judge towing the party line. We like to tell ourselves Nazi Germany was so horrific it could never be repeated. Maybe you don’t personally know someone who would have flipped the switch on the gas chambers. But I can almost guarantee you know a Jakob Schmid." - Libby Jones (via Twitter) Original thread: https://twitter.com/libbyjones715/status/1308989753291874314

“The real damage is done by those millions who want to 'survive.' The honest men who just want to be left in peace. Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. Those with no sides and no causes. Those who won’t take measure of their own strength, for fear of antagonizing their own weakness. Those who don’t like to make waves—or enemies. Those for whom freedom, honour, truth, and principles are only literature. Those who live small, mate small, die small. It’s the reductionist approach to life: if you keep it small, you’ll keep it under control. If you don’t make any noise, the bogeyman won’t find you. But it’s all an illusion, because they die too, those people who roll up their spirits into tiny little balls so as to be safe. Safe?! From what? Life is always on the edge of death; narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch does. I choose my own way to burn.” Sophie Scholl

They are famous in Germany. Lots of schools, streets, public places etc. are named after them. In 2004, there was a petition to rename the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich as Scholl Siblings University (it is where they distributed their leaflets). This was declined.

I'm conflicted over this one. I'm not in favor of people taking justice in their own hands. But when the system fails you... what would you do? Especially in cases as gruesome as this one... Was he right to shoot this man down? Maybe he could have recorded the conversation... I don't know. His little girl didn't have her father from 6 to 19... That's quite a heavy consequence even if he did was felt right. But it was also a radical way to prevent this man from abusing more children.
