This is not correct in my Arkansas, (Grandfather from Tennessee), family. We have First cousins, Second cousins, Third cousins, etc. We don't have ANY once-removed. For example, my Mother's first cousin is my Second cousin and my Second cousin's Child is my Third cousin.

See I always called my cousins children my second cousin not first once removed. I saw it as a second generation on my cousins side. It's very confusing

The gender neutral word for a niece and/or nephew is nibling. Plural is niblings. Our family now uses this word whenever possible.

My very large family gave up trying to figure this out. Now we all just say we're kin.
