My favorite section of the 'Guinness World Records' book was always the biggest things. I marveled at the Blue Whale, the skyscrapers vying for the world's tallest and trucks with wheels the size of a house.
The most important part, the thing that really makes you say 'wow' is the scale. You can't really appreciate the sheer size of something unless something familiar is placed alongside it for comparison. We here at Bored Panda have compiled a list of things that are even bigger than you probably thought. From wombats to wolves, these 'big' things are actually freaking huge! Scroll down to check them out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Worth reading this book: The Agony and the Ecstasy (1961) is a biographical novel of Michelangelo Buonarroti written by American author Irving Stone. Stone lived in Italy for years visiting many of the locations in Rome and Florence, worked in marble quarries, and apprenticed himself to a marble sculptor. A primary source for the novel is Michelangelo's correspondence, all 495 letters of which Stone had translated from Italian by Charles Speroni and published in 1962 as I, Michelangelo, Sculptor. Stone also collaborated with Canadian sculptor Stanley Lewis, who researched Michelangelo's carving technique and tools.[2] The Italian government lauded Stone with several honorary awards for his cultural achievements highlighting Italian history.

Why haven't anyone told me how big this thing is :O . I assumed it was about the natural size.

Load More Replies...Saw this in Florence, absolutely incredible the way this statue was carved right down to every muscle in his body.
Notice one of his toes is missing, some dumb lady snuck in a hammer and broke it off.
Saw it in person earlier this year and was shocked at how big it is.
The statue is gorgeous. A beautiful piece of art of the male human body. It is on my bucket list to see one day. His hands look huge to me though. 👐
It was supposed to be placed in an empty spot on the roof of the Florentian cathedral ... It had to be big to be seen from the streets below. But thew Florentians thought the statue to be too pretty to be up there ... so it was placed down on the plaza.
head and neck are too large. (what is she looking at, it's cold)
I've actually seen this in person, and I don't remember being that big...

Load More Replies...The body may be huge but there's a certain part that could stand to be a bit bigger.
His head is proportioned larger due to the aspect of view being from the ground.
I thought David was outdoors, not indoors. Has anybody actually seen the statue?
I have, it's beautiful and powerful. There is a copy outside, in the Piazza della Signoria, maybe that's the one you are thinking about. David originally was outside, but he had to be taken inside (into the Galleria dell'Accademia, where this picture was taken) because the weather and other factors were taking a toll on him. The copy in the piazza is where he used to be.

The Largest Tree In The World
Actually not the tallest anymore. All of the tallest trees in the world are indeed giant sequoias, but Hyperion outranks the General Sherman by far (379.7 ft for Hyperion, compared to 275 ft for General Sherman). Helios was discovered in 2006. I don't believe it's location has been revealed to the public.

I was just reading in a book last night about medicine, and when a scientist from the mid 1800's couldn't get a human foot to dissect, he got a bear's foot and did it instead, since they are so similar. It was someone famous, but now I cannot recall who it was.

@FaqirAfaq What, your ego? Or the level of magnification on that telescope?
These are all really cool, some I knew, some really stopped me in my tracks. Awesome!
Am I the only one who looked at the title and immediately giggled? Sounds so wrong.
Thought provoking. We think of ourselves as the biggest and best - and indeed some of the man-made items are huge, but nature does well too. There seems to be a template for mammals and each species is tweaked slightly to make it individual.
Actually a pretty interesting post! Thanks :) now we need small stuff!!
While the idea first appeared on Buzzfeed, it looks like they just took the photos from a subreddit without doing further research. Bored Panda has done extensive research and has collected more pictures. By the way, Buzzfeed copies Bored Panda's posts all the time (never crediting us, even after we contact them), so it works both ways. The difference is we invest more time and try to do posts better
