The extreme weather has bent roads, melted power cables, and triggered heat warnings for 50 million people in North America.
But other continents are suffering too. In Europe, for example, a massive forest fire is ravaging Greece for the 7th day.

The sinking air acts as a cap or a heat dome and traps the latent heat already absorbed by the landscape. The high-pressure system also pushes out cooler, fast-moving air currents and squeezes clouds away, which gives the sun an unobstructed line of sight to the ground.
The ground — soil, sand, concrete, and asphalt — is then free to bake, and in the long days and short nights of summer, heat energy quickly accumulates and temperatures climb.

Heatwaves typically last around five days, but can stick around for longer if the high-pressure system is blocked in place. “In some cases, you actually can get these kinds of patterns getting stuck, and that can lead to heat waves lasting much longer,” Karen McKinnon, an assistant professor of environment and sustainability at the University of California Los Angeles, told Vox.
Eventually, the high-pressure system will weaken, allowing in cooler air and precipitation that can bring the heatwave to an end. However, as the warm season continues, more high-pressure systems can settle in and restart the process.

What likely happened is the compressor either tripped on thermal overload, or a high-pressure control turned the system off to prevent damage. That left the vending machine as a bit of a greenhouse and the cans heated up until they burst.

I've been living in the USA for over 20 years and I'm still confused by Americans' obsession with ice in all seasons. My boyfriend asks me if I want "American Ice" or "British Ice" in my drinks. "American" = a drink with your ice, "British" = a couple blocks of ice in your drink - or none at all.

Even with the chilling device if the vending machine sits with the sun directly on it in the heat we've had this summer, the cold inside can't compete with the sun outside.
So, curious, does Britain have a lot of humidity? Because the hottest day so far listed was like 32.2C which is only 88F. That's not really all that hot unless there is high humidity as well.
Hmmm... I'm not so sure about this. I saw a similar thing happen in a leisure centre I used to go to and what happened was that, in a normal summer temperature, the refrigerator just happened to malfunction and froze up. As there is less air space in the cans these burst open when the liquid expanded turning to ice. The plastic bottles have sections which are designed to blow out on impact if they are dropped and these will have blown out to accommodate the freezing contents. So the cold, not the heat, caused the blowouts.
What a MESS!! A small freezer with a forgotten sweetened cola explosion is bad enough. This mess is a nightmare or sticky yuck. And having to stand out there and do the cleaning in the heat? Toss the damn machine!
I live in Washington state-- a lot of places do not have AC because it usually doesn't get too hot. During the heat wave in July, a lot of local bars and restaurants lost all of their beer on tap because the kegs exploded.

Just a request to everyone that lives in a hot, dry area, please set out containers (buckets, bowls, whatever) of water (if possible) for our wild friends. It could make a life saving difference.
you can easily get heat stroke or heat exhaustion if you work outside in these temps... study up online on the many resources there about what to do if you or a co-worker starts to go down with heat exhaustion... I live in Texas, and have had to work outside all day in 109 degF (43 degC) temps before... yep, had heat exhaustion with cramps, sweated out until the skin went dry & turned blue... call for help if you get to this point, go take a cold shower with clothes on if necessary, drink plenty of liquids... put ice packs around the head, in the armpits, and in the groin area to pull the heat out of the body. Put one level teaspoon of salt in a quart of very cold ice water to make your own quick & easy electrolyte solution.. Drink it all slowly. Repeat if necessary. If you are so dehydrated that you can't keep it down, GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM... You are in big trouble. A heat stroke can turn into a real stroke. You could be in a wheelchair the rest of your life if you don't deal with this. Also don't drink anything with caffeine in it since this will increase the blood pressure & the possibility of a real stroke. THIS IS SERIOUS, FOLKS!

I need to say this again in these comments but NEVER give your dog ice or allow them to drink iced water or lay on ice. Ice actually raises their core temperature which leads to heat stroke which we know can be fatal - and very quickly - in dogs. You are far safer to let them drink tap water and dampen a bath towel which you can then rub on their fur.
where i live, the weather is 32-34 (celsius), sometimes even 35 or 36, but the weather report says it feels like 37. additionally, when it is raining, temperatures can dip to 21, which isn't normal here as i live in a place where it is tropical

I live in Las Vegas and take 2 ice chests and thermal bags when grocery shopping. Means I can get popcorn home before it pops, plastic bottles hold their shape and the canned soup won't heat to serving temperature before getting into the house. AND I ALWAYS carry bottled water and offer it to anyone in a parking lot, when seeing Postal Workers and anyone else who looks like they need it. Stay hydrated!
There are now at least two good viable methods for removing CO2 from the atmosphere, where are the billions that should be invested right now? What further proof do you need that our leaders are useless and ineffective?

Do not wait for the idiot to come back out. This is especially true if the child is in obvious distress. Find a large cinder block or axe & break out the window opposite the child. Open doors & rescue child. Call the police, this is felony child abuse and call for an ambulance... Do something to cool the child down until the ambulance arrives. If the idiot throws a tantrum because you broke their window, punch their lights out. Several children die from abuse like this every year in TX. Don't be so polite that you do nothing & the child dies...
Here in my country, we get an average 35°C for almost 7-8 months of the year... Sometimes more hot. Yet, this is dreadful to watch, specially the photos of the Canadian moose or beaver... I mean, it's Canada for f***ks sake

Jeez, this is incredible. I live in the US, in Wisconsin. And we've had some hot days, but nothing quite like this. I was just whining yesterday, because "it was unbearable". Now that I see this, it looked like a nice spring day. My heart goes out to everyone in these climates.

Fry eggs on the sidewalk-yeah. Melt candles-yeah. But we have not touched the temps. Hottest I lived through is 114. And yes most homes over poverty level have AC. The news channels give away fans every year. Homeless and poverty level go to the libraries to beat the heat. News posts lake levels as they evaporate down to very low during the heat. We have state agencies to monitor water levels. However climate change has affected us too. This year we had rain nearly everyday. Everything is lush and green. It is August and only 97 for a high. I remember when we broke the 100 degree weather streak 97 felt cool. We have had a lot more snow in winter too. I remember going over 20 years with no snow at all. Cold showers help. Stay indoors during the afternoons. Do important outdoor work between dawn and 10 am.
