Let’s have a big round of applause for all the baristas out there who smilingly greet us grumpy in the mornings and send us off with a great start to the day, aka the morning cup of coffee, on which everything that waits ahead relies. Meetings, dates, calls, you name it.

So let’s just all imagine the uncaffeinated bunch of clients Starbucks workers see every day. In fact, we don’t need to imagine that, thanks to the Reddit community which goes by the same name, r/Starbucks. Here, the employees of the popular coffeehouse chain spill it all, the good and the bad.

Below, you'll find the stories they shared about the most awful clients, craziest orders and everything they had to deal with at work and it’s just pure madness. After you're done reading this one, be sure to check out part 1 with more Starbucks horror stories.

According to Starbucks' careers website, baristas are the face of Starbucks. The popular coffeehouse chain states that “They are an important part of our customers’ days, and experts in handcrafting delicious, perfect beverages.” Moreover, “Baristas personally connect and create moments that make a difference and work together to create a welcoming store environment,” says the company’s website. Starbucks argues that baristas are the ones who bring their mission and values to life “while proudly wearing the green apron.”

An Inspiration To Us All

An Inspiration To Us All

JakeWoody Report

So what exactly is the company looking for in the people who greet customers every day? Well, Starbucks argues that you’d make a great barista if you are a “people person,” and enjoy meeting others, love working as a team and appreciate the chance to collaborate, understand how to create a great customer service experience, have a focus on quality and take pride in your work. So if you press apply for a barista position on their website, you’d be surprised how much importance they put on social and interpersonal skills. No wonder why, when you look at the clients they have to deal with on a daily basis.

On the other hand, working as a barista at Starbucks is still viewed as a first job for college students since the company is flexible with working hours and has many locations to meet your needs. According to Indeed.com, average Starbucks barista hourly pay in the United States is approximately $12.55, which meets the national average.

However, like many companies, Starbucks faced labor shortage in 2021 and announced it was raising their average pay up to $17 an hour starting late January 2022. Around the same time, the company also announced that it was investing in training, as well as redesigning its "Barista Basics" guide and adding more training time.

and it looked like they are all different (hello Kitty, ninja turtle,...)... seems to be a good effort to be customized for each worker. I am sure the manager have close to no budget given by the Company for worker's gifts

I appreciate the sentiment but giving a barista a cup of coffee and a coloring book is like giving a zookeeper a shovel and a coloring book. You can get a shovel everyday at work and your customers give you crap all day so all you see is the shovel .

This is a Supervisor providing gift bags out of their own pocket. This has nothing to do Corporate. They would never be so generous or caring.

Not up to the manager to decide the worker's pay, that comes from higher up. She was trying to compensate for the way they were underpaid and underappreciated by corporate.

Thanksgiving and Christmas day were honestly the best days to work, because you get paid extra per hour, there aren't as many customers, you get off early enough to spend time with family or friends if you want, and people usually tip well because they feel bad that you have to work. I volunteered to work these days when I worked for Starbucks.

As an RN I worked weekends and holidays, I always made a point to thank anyone who was also working, i.e. fast-food or convenience store workers.

Now this is a manager who understands. Just because it's not within your power to give us the raises we want, doesn't mean you can't do something to make people feel special!

I can appreciate the gesture but you for real could have just given them the money you spent on free drinks and coloring books to them. Id be insulted if i got this. Just like how my former company gave everyone iphone cases when like 30% of us had Androids.

Someone with a heart! Bet everyone was overjoyed! I work in a different field and also work every holiday. For Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year we made a grazing table with festive grab and go snacks so no one went hungry for the long shifts. And I cook and bake and always bring in little extras to let them know they are appreciated.

Ah yes a cup, a little kid's coloring book, and a cheap pack of off brand crayons. And potentially a dollar store toy. That totally makes up for having to work a holiday. /S

I'm confused. If this is the manager, they give them a drink, which should be free anyway. If it is a customer giving it out, who has this many baristas that they stop at?

I had to stay in an extended stay hotel for 6 wks when I moved, before I got my apt. On Christmas I walked around & gave every employee an envelope w/ $20 in it. It cost me maybe $120, but it made working on a holiday easier for them & I enjoyed it even more
