Ursula Goff wants to show you the truth behind the mask. The Kansas based hairstylist took two selfies, one with a goofy expression and without doing her hair and makeup, and the other, days later, fully styled. Goff posted the images to social media with a message:
“Social media can make it easy to feel like everyone else is awesome and perfect all the time, but that’s really never true,” Goff wrote on Facebook. “Part of the solution, I think, is more people opting to take a moment here and there to be real and show what’s behind the smoke and mirrors, because it’s relevant for y’all to know that this isn’t reality.”

“So I didn’t edit either one of these photos, but they were taken just a few days apart. I think it’s important to note that lighting, angles, facial expression, and make-up make a huge difference in photography and presentation (especially in my case!). Social media can make it easy to feel like everyone else is awesome and perfect all the time, but that’s really never true. We should keep in mind that behind every pretty face or perfect lifestyle is a regular person, and that there’s really no point in comparing amongst ourselves because this is all cultivated. I think of all the young people out there, especially girls, who are influenced by media in this way, and I think about how badly I know I’d feel if I were a teen today, trying to cope with ever more perfect females all over the place, and how that would likely suck even worse than what prior generations had to go through. Part of the solution, I think, is more people opting to take a moment here and there to be real and show what’s behind the smoke and mirrors, because it’s relevant for y’all to know that this isn’t reality. In reality, nothing is perfect, life is messy, and people are flawed. So the best way to be happy with yourself is to cultivate YOURSELF, vs. cultivating an IMAGE, or comparing yourself to everyone else. Do the things you want to do, find things you love, figure out what and who you want to be, and then set out to do that stuff. Think about what matters to you, and then try to engage with those activities, people, and/or values daily. Do you. For real.”

Share on FacebookThe message is awesome. We need more of this kind of influence for the young people. (I'm not that old though).
Not for nothing, but I think she looks majestic as hell no matter the state...could be biased though as truth is attractive.
I was thinking the same thing. A good point that she makes but she's still pretty!

Beautiful when time was taken to show pride in herself. Love the hair color. would love to do it but being pure silver it won't work!
Why are people downvoting your comment? Maybe they don't understand you meant you, not her. And I say go for it! Some colors work anyway.
Load More Replies...It's true. It's awful that people spend hours for 1 selfie more than getting ready for job or school.
Absolutely agree!!! What a good message to send out. Hope this goes even more viral. You are right there about the time as a teen and wishing. I was a teen in the 1990s and sometimes look at today's teens and wish I had that opportunity back then - when we didn't have or could not afford hair straighteners and social media wasn't around then :) it's an interesting outlook. I agree though only cultivate ourselves as we are all different to each other.
Maybe the solution would also to stop posting pictures of ourselves in every single situation ? I mean, it's ok if you show a new haircut or whatever, but honestly, what's this with people who are going to post hundred pictures of their face ? Sounds a bit narcissist...
There is no "solution" people will do what they like.. I like taking pictures of myself simply because I am always evolving and want to capture how I look on any given day... I've heard that taking many "selfies" is narcissistic but then I've only gotten good feedback from Instagram followers...

True what the writer says. When I was a teen/young adult I also wanted to 'fit in' and be with the 'In Crowd' until I found out they were all smoke and mirrors, baseless, fickle and only concerned with their own image. What a let down that was.
i dont care how she looks in reality the important is that she has a great hair coloration
Awesome message.. If only MORE beautiful young women would share such an important message, the world's would be a better place. When I say beautiful, I mean the writer is beautiful by showing how nobody wakes up to perfection. Anyone can be attractive on the outside with enough makeup, lights, hair, even editing in many cases.
Brushing one's hair also obviously makes a huge difference LOL I think it's awesome she posted those bedhead photos, tho :D
Question about your hair: Do you have a perm as well as bleached colored hair? And how do you keep it healthy? My hair dresser won't do both but that is fine I can do the perm myself.
Ok, I'm sure she'll see this comment and change her entire style to suit your personal preferences. 🙄 So helpful.
Load More Replies...I prefer her more natural everyday looks. The one of her with 'perfect' hair and make-up should be for special occasions only but so many women these days want to look like that every day.
Well very true message in the post but kind of put together a bit messily
Ooooh. So great photographs require painstaking preparation; and some women are dumb enough to compare their non-made-up, non-photoshopped self with stuff they see in media. Neither is particularly suprising, or new.
So dumb men still fail to understand that this is most important for young girls, children who don't know what this "painstaking preparation" is and who may believe that being beautiful and thus being desired and loved are things impossibly far from their grasp. People learn and interiorize beauty standards at a very young age. I's not a bad idea to help them see things as they truly are.
Load More Replies...You have to be so dumb to not know that sometimes you can't have the same color, hair that you see on pics or that it doesn't stay this way for a long time.
Do women who wear massive amounts of make-up ever think of the fact that they risk looking like a drag queen?
